Bad Customer Service

I've been a member with Service Credit Union for many years. I applied for a credit card with them and mistakenly did not include all of my income. Quite naturally the application was denied. I called twice to update the application and the first representative Kim was super helpful and accommodating. When I realized that I did not put my monthly income from my primary employment and called back, I spoke with a Jamel that was quite rude and did not help at all with updating to send for another review. That experience left me with wanting to close ALL of my accounts with Service Credit Union and taking my business to another credit union.

Had an account with them for 30 years

Had an account with them for 30 years. Since the expanded some years ago they have become more and more like a corporate bank. The customer service people have become more and more rude. Their attitude is more about getting rid of the customer instead of helping them with their problem. I had my. credit card balance transferred to one that had no interest for 18 months. My balance showed up on the other credit card but it didn't come off my Service CU balance for a good 3 week. As a result my credit rating went way down because it looked like I owed twice as much as I really did. I talked to at least five different people. All said the same thing is wasn't their responsibility and it was their problem. Some were extremely rude in telling me this. Changed to a smaller credit Union where they treat me like a human being.

Be careful with them, make sure you read every detail in their contract because they won t tell you anything 👍👍👍

I’ve had a car loan with Service Credit Union since last year. I was overseas when I purchased the car in March, and the dealership held the vehicle until I returned stateside, taking delivery in early July. Since then, I’ve encountered issues with an insurance verification requirement and CPI adjustments on my loan. After a few months, an insurance-related charge (CPI) appeared on my account. When I tried to resolve it, I was told I hadn’t provided proof of insurance.I contacted my insurance provider and provided the binding insurance documents .Once the documents were received, Service Credit Union partially reversed the charge, but required proof of insurance from the purchase date through the pickup date at the dealership, dates that spanned overseas and several administrative steps. As a service member stationed overseas, I expected smoother handling and clear guidance on documentation timelines. I’m concerned about how similar situations could affect others in similar circumstances.
If you’re considering Service Credit Union for a loan or auto financing, I recommend:
- Confirming how proof of insurance should be provided, and whether there’s flexibility for deployed members.
- Requesting written confirmation of any charges (like CPI) and the reasons behind them.
- Asking about a dedicated member service contact for international or deployed members to streamline communication.
This review reflects my personal experience and aims to encourage improvements that would benefit all members, especially service members and overseas customers. If you’ve had a different experience, I’d be glad to hear about it and adjust the feedback accordingly.

I have been with them for 10+ years

I have been with them for 10+ years, getting worse and worse. Poor customer service, a lot of rainbow flag type decorations.

They were just handing out chapsticks in a bucket on the counter for customers to grab. #1 ingredient is a petroleum product, imagine your kid putting that oil on their skin and it going directly into their blood stream.

Company is irresponsible.

At the end of 2025 SYSTEM DOWNGRADE

At the end of 2025, Service Federal Credit Union, upgraded their systems to a new platform. The platform itself is more user friendly for account management, the catch is the new bill pay provider is absolute rubbish! I have been trying to get all payments re-organized, as I had most bills being recieved and paid from the portal and all of those services were lost. The new portal makes it impossible for the few providers that will link to keep a connection to receive bills each month to manage them and pay ontime. If your payment has to go out by check it takes two weeks for them to be recieved by the payer which has been a problem. Before the downgrade in bill payment systems, i would have given the 5+ stars. NICE JOB SERVICE CREDIT UNION, now I am considering moving my accounts after 15 years.

Garbage. Closing accounts as soon as I get home

I am overseas and been with SCU for 8 years. The last six months, my card keeps getting fraud alerts for no reason, and multiple times per month. I’m constantly having to call this bank, wait forever to get the fraud alert lifted. Right now, I’m traveling in Italy, lost my card and have no cash on me. After 8 phone calls today (a few of them just trying to navigate their ridiculous automated system), 3.5 hours on the phone with customer service, and waiting three hours for a digital card to put on Apple Pay so I can at least eat, the card still declined because of another bogus fraud alert. Then I had to spend another 44 minutes trying to be helped before I was finally able to use the digital card. I hate this credit union. I feel like access to MY money is getting more and more difficult here. As soon as I return, I’m closing all my accounts. I’ve had enough. Beware.

The worst place to put your trust in…

The worst place to put your trust in EVER!! I was hacked twice in less than two weeks and SCU paid one of the four bogus purchases. The other three were not paid by SCU because they say I must show verification to them that I did not make those purchases on my Amazon account. I contacted both Amazon and SCU the moment I found the fraud, and closed the Amazon right away after the second attempt. Amazon will not sent info to SCU because they are not on my account. So I am left to eat my losses, even though SCU is protected, I am not, so beware, If you ever have bogus purchases anywhere, rest assured, you will be treated like you are the criminal. I am 81 yrs old, and never been as insulted as I am over this! I now am with a new bank! FYI thwy were supposed to put the money back in my account right away, but instead are holding on to it against my will. All I can say is SCU are the real crooks! David Araujo President of SCU. Maybe you should look into the shady practices of the people who work for you!

Hate this bank

They changed the location of where I opened an account. It was the same place for 2 decades, now they changed it. WTH They kick you offline even when activly using the website. You would think I am making this up, but I can't. They will have you verify mulitple times for the same thing, at least 4 times on average. I hate this bank

Overseas Service Members Beware!

Overseas Service members beware: SCU absolutely GOUGES you (this is the PG version of what they do) on exchange rates. They take several % off the top for themselves every time you convert Dollars to Euro or vice versa - which can add up to **literally thousands** of dollars during a 3-year assignment in Europe. Of course, every financial institution takes a small percentage from currency exchanges, but with SCU it's SO much worse than normal. For example, if you spend 3000 Euro/month (rent, utilities, Euro ATM withdrawals) and SCU takes 2%, that's 60 Euro per month = 720 per year = 2160 Euro during a 3-year assignment!

THE GOOD NEWS: Money transfer services/apps (e.g., Wise) let you pay all your Euro bills using the actual (direct) exchange rate, so Service members can keep their normal US bank, and are no longer stuck using SCU (nor the other popular bank for Service members).

Been charging me extra for "life…

Been charging me extra for "life insurance and disability insurance." For over 2 years... then after I spoke to someone to get get it cancelled they had told me it was good to go. I got charged the following month saying we can't cancel it without a signature on a document. Then the lady over the phone was very rude the entire time. Most unprofessional scam company of them all buyer's beware!!!! STAY AWAY

Absolute schmuck's

Absolute schmuck's. Raised my dirtbike loan 4% on April because they don't consider it a motorcycle. Motorcycle rates are 4% better? What a joke. Terrible customer service. Will never use again and neither should you. Lighthouse credit union is much better

Long time customer, giving up due to lack of phone CS.

I've used SCU for twenty years, they are stodgy, but lately, overseas CS? I'm in India, unable to access my stateside account. I have been on the phone, being vetted twice. I have been given a temp pw, but nope, the log-in wants to send me an OTP, but my phone does not have an international calling plan, so that's a no go. I've been here on the phone now for over 40 minutes, unable to access my account. I do like SCU, and my branch is local, but I cannot rely on it anymore due to inability to reach competent CS.

Thieves

I have had too many poor interactions with SCU to count. Predatory fees, and practices. You have to pay a convenience fee to pay your loan payments, overdraft fees are straight out of a horror movie. I can't believe that I was taken such blatant advantage of as a young new soldier OCONUS. It's despicable. Whoever comes up with/allows this stuff, you better hope God has mercy.

I have been a customer with them since…

I have been a customer with them since 2014. I am so sick of their horrible customer service workers, I got locked out of my account multiple times and they are slow in returning my access, I am stuck with them because I am active duty and they are the only ones at my base overseas. Truly a horrible credit union.

OK Bank, Dishonest Referral Bonuses

The credit union's banking fuction itself is adequate, nothing special.

Please be aware that they will do anything to weasel out of paying new member referral bonuses. After the bonus period expired, they claimed I did not make enough direct deposits. As if I can control that?

The customer service has always answered quickly but the marketing department left a sour taste in my mouth and I will be moving to another bank now.

A mediocre bank at best

A mediocre bank at best. They have terrible rates, but fair customer service. I’ve had multiple problems with account ownership with my wife being the primary account holder. When I voice the concerns, they were not helpful and problems still remain. I am looking for a new bank.

This has to be the WORST credit union I…

This has to be the WORST credit union I have ever dealt with! If you need to contact them, plan on waiting at least and hour on hold. You get disconnected with chat sessions. They take over a month and a half (so far) reporting to credit agencies. Didn't receive loan paperwork until I called...and waited...and waited...and waited... 1 hour and 15 mins later I was able to ask the representative if I could get my loan account information. No one is in a rush to help you here!
