Got email saying books were received and still no payment

I sent my books in the end of September, we are now at the end of October and I still have not received payment. I emailed multiple times and have not received any emails back. I got an email saying they received my books almost 2 weeks ago. Would like answers to why they do not even email back. Will be contacting police by Friday if no email is returned and confirmation of payment.

** Edit: Tony contacted us via the email provided to learn one of his books had been sent out for authentication. Once it was authenticated Tony promptly was issued payment. Happy ending for all.

Worth the wait...best prices!

College Focus takes a bit more time to process your books and issue payment but as far as I am concerned, it's worth it. It clearly states on their website what to expect throughout the process of having them buy your book back. Unfortunately, one of my books got selected to have a counterfeit check done but it passed and a few days later they issued payments for all three books I sent. I emailed them a few times and received a response right away with the status and what to expect next. I am very happy with the service they provided me and highly recommend this company to anyone wanting to make extra cash selling your old books back.

LOOK ELSEWHERE NOT WORTH THE FRUSTRATION

I sold a book to CollegFocus mailed it immediately & verified they received the book within 5 days. After not receiving payment for 14 days after they received the book I contacted them, they replied & indicated the book was just received back from being authenticated, and payment will be sent within 2-5 business days. Well 2-5 business days has passed since I received that email and still no payment, in a couple of days it will be a month since I placed the book in the mail! EVEN IF THEY OFFER HIGHER PRICES THEY ARE NOT WORTH THE TIME & EFFORT TO GET PAID, IF YOU EVER GET PAID!!!.... COLLEGE FOCUS RESPONDED AND PAID ME AFTER MY POST AND INDICATED THEY PAID ME BEFOR THE 6TH BUSINESS DAY AFTER THEY AGREED TO PAY ME IN 2-5 BUSINESS DAYS, YES THEY PAID ME OVER THE WEEKEND AFTER I COMPLAINED AND IF I DIDN'T COMPLAIN I DOUBT THEY WOULD HAVE ACTED SO READ THEIR RESPONSE CAREFULLY BELOW AND BE VERY CAUTIOUS USING THEIR SERVICE, I SENT 2 BOOKS OFF TO 2 DIFFERENT VENDORS AT THE SAME TIME AND COLLEGEFOCUS PAYMENT TOOK OVER 2+ WEEKS LONGER NOT TO MENTION THE EMAILS & BLASTING THEM HERE, JUST SAYING!!!!

Hi Charles,

Your book had to be sent to the publisher for authentication which caused the long delay.

As for payment, it is still high season and as we communicated everything takes longer; however, you were actually paid before the 6th business day.

We are sorry the current situation with counterfeits requires us to verify any book in question and as it is high season, that process can take awhile depending on the publisher. We are also sorry payment processing took longer than you hoped, but you have been paid in full.

If you have any further concerns just contact us: help@collegefocus.com

Hi Tammy,

You first emailed us at 11:34am - you were replied to at 1:34pm - only two hours after you first emailed us.

A two hour response time seems very reasonable, but sorry it is not acceptable to you.

Your book was being authenticated and current legalities don't allow us to email a potential counterfeiter until after a book has been authenticated. It's not the best customer service experience, but best legal move for us currently.

If you have any further questions reply to the email you've been sent or email us: help@collegefocus.com

Brett,

You were quoted for the student edition of the book, you sent us an Instructor Edition clearly marked "Not for resale" - which by our agreement with Publishers, and the law, and as the book as it clearly states: it is not for resale. Thus it was destroyed according to the Terms of Service you agreed to upon checkout.

Book buyback is very simple - send us the exact book we quote in good condition and you will get your money without problem, send us a different book or something in terrible condition and you likely won't get any money.

However, open review sites like TrustPilot will still allow scammers like you Brett to leave us a negative review despite you being the one that tried to scam us.

Shipped books on the 4th of September

Shipped books on the 4th of September. Received USPS confirmation of arrival on the 11th. Nine days later, I have neither received payment or even confirmation of receival, although my USPS not only states arrival but that it was also picked up (from a PO box) on the same day. Also, College Focus is not responding to inquiries I have placed through the account. I have photos and screenshots that attest to the condition of books and packaging (though as I have stated I have received no word from College Focus, and I have not been informed of any problems in this aspect)and the truth of all statements made in this post. Without any available phone number and no responses via email, I am going to contact the local police where I sent the package, however I am assuming I'm just SOL as they say. I will update this post if anything changes.

*UPDATE*

I just received the payment. I did PayPal and In the end it took 18 days, with the only update being a response to an inquiry the day before payment. I'm not sure if the timing was just irony, or if it was because I began to air it out publicly. With the recent weather in Texas (though I'm not sure they were affected and there was no mention of it) I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I sent two of my books there because I was given the best quote for those books from them. I was paid the amount quoted. All said, I probably would not use them again. I would also recommend taking pictures of the books, packaging, keep receipts of mailing, and take screenshots of tracking records and all communications. I also found the final sentence of the response , an "apology" for the "one business day" to be condesending and unapolegetic for the true lack of communication along the way. I have updated my review from 1 star to 2.

Hi William,

One of your books was a potential counterfeit and was sent out for authentication. You were emailed the following day after we received authentication of your book and payment the next day. Due to the increasing amounts of counterfeits in the marketplace all correspondence has to be in writing so we do not, and will not for the foreseeable future have a support number again - sorry. Your first email was also replied to within a business day, sorry if that is not an acceptable time frame for you.

Complicated and unclear buyback guidelines!

I took pictures of my book before I sent it into college focus. I saw some reviews saying that they will throw it out if they think its in bad condition. My book was fully intact, all pages there. It was a used book so it had very minimal wear and one extremely small wrip on the bottom of the front cover that would not even effect the readers experience! There was one pencil mark that couldve easily been erased maybe 1 pen streak thats it. I have photos to prove that! What do they expect from a used book? It was still usable 100%! They should be so much more specific in their buyback guidelines. Basically they want a brand new book I guess? Im glad I took photos and wish I could attatch them here. I messaged them but am not sure what their exuse will be. My other book looked great on the outside but had some pen marks on it in many of the pages and they still paid full price for that so I dont get it.

Hi Brianna,

You were emailed with pictures about your book having liquid damage - such a book is not 100% usable. I don't think anyone wants to receive a book with liquid damage and mold growing. It is unfortunate that photos can't be attached to this site to defend against unsubstantiated reviews like yours. Your other book did meet our acceptance criteria and full payment has been issued.

Unfortunately, there's no way for us to verify you are a real user of our service. However, we can say that many reasons might cause a book to be assigned zero value after quotation: the wrong book/edition is sent that we are not buying, the book does not meet the mutually agreed upon condition standards, or the book might prove to be counterfeit. In any case, you would have been emailed about the price change and if the value went to zero, there would be no payment issued.

Scammers!

Scammers!! They took my book and said it is counterfeit. I bought at my college bookstore. When I asked about it they replied that it was sent for verification and that they will be contacting me or law enforcement will be once the conterfeit review is completed. Now they won't respond to me.

James, you were told months ago your book was counterfeit. Obviously, we can't share counterfeit detection methods with you or anyone else unless approved by the publisher, no matter how many times you email us. Know that our inspectors have been trained by the publishers, we retain authenticated examples of almost all books we buy, and if for any reason we question the authenticity of a book it will absolutely be sent to a publisher for authentication to avoid legal action against us.

DON'T FALL FOR THE POSITIVE REVIEWS. IT IS A SCAM.

DON'T FALL FOR THE POSITIVE REVIEWS! IT IS A SCAM!
I sent them two almost new books in the same box. They replied, via email, that they didn't get one and that the other was seriously damaged. The book was NOT damaged and how did you get one book, but not the second book if they were BOTH in the SAME box?? There is NO live person and emails go unanswered after their dismissive "Thanks it was damaged. You get no money." email. These positive reviews are scams. Take less and go with a reputable company. If it sounds too go to be true, IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!

Hi Kim, we are not able to verify you as a customer. However, it does happen that orders are damaged by the USPS in transit - that is why we offer insurance for all orders. Customers can usually avoid such issues by securely packaging their book(s). Don't put a single book in a big box and let it get thrown around during transport. We also receive orders with tire prints, ripped open, etc - most people aren't aware, but mail is treated pretty roughly - sometimes we just receive an order label in a ziplock bag from the USPS. In short, use insurance, otherwise you'll only be able to file a lost mail claim with the USPS and hope your book shows up at their lost mail facility in Atlanta, GA.

SCAM SCAM SCAM

Do NOT send this place your books!! Same complaints as everyone else... 1) shady practices promising high payouts then basically stealing books by changing your payout to $0 and keeping your books
2) no live customer service at all
3) dismissive emails until you straight up ask for answers, then you get no response at all
4) for a business with an address in Texas, email responses were all sent in the middle of the night, indicating to me this is in China or something.

Save yourself the headache. Take a few bucks less and go with a reputable company that will at least return your books if they downgrade the condition. My book was brand new, purchased at my university bookstore and they claimed it was counterfeit. Weird, they now have the same book available for purchase. Guess they have no problem re-selling my "counterfeit" book??

Hi Tiffany,

Unfortunately, it is illegal for us to buy or sell a counterfeit book - as it is for anyone, whether they know it is a counterfeit or not according to current law. Because we have to deal with counterfeits - all support must be in writing which is why phone support is no longer offered. As support personnel are both working mothers, yes we sometimes answer emails during non-traditional business hours - sorry if that is problem for you. We have no way to validate, nor did you offer proof of your book purchase, but in reality it doesn't matter. A counterfeit is counterfeit even if your bookstore sold it as 100% legitimate and real. If you are not aware the big 3 publishers are selling one of the largest textbook distributors and college bookstore companies for selling counterfeits - used and "new". It's a very unfortunate situation that winds up hurting college students the most.

complete scam

I looked up the ISBN for my textbook on the site, and they said my textbook was worth $74. I printed off the shipping label and sent in my textbook. Then, once they received my textbook, they sent me an email saying that they are changing the price from $74 to $0. I emailed their "help" email explaining the situation and saying I would either like the $74 they initially promised me or my textbook mailed back to me, but they have yet to respond. Their contact phone number just directs you to a automated voice message that says to go online for any issues. What a lame excuse for a company.

Hi Kristen,

Yes, we did provide you a quote for 9781305627734 which is the hard cover edition of the book.

You sent us 9781305861701 which is the loose-leaf edition of the book.

Had you sent us the book for which we supplied a quote you would have been paid the quoted amount. You decide to perhaps "scam" us and sent the wrong book hoping to get paid when it is mentioned at checkout, packing slip, and in terms of service we do not buy loose-leaf editions of books.

Buyback companies will only pay the quoted amount if they are sent the exact ISBN and edition used to generate a quote.

RUDE! And will not return your books! They can change your quote to whatever they please!

Not BBB Accredited! I urge everyone to not conduct business with CollegeFocus. It is a very new business and thrives off of poor college kids trying to make an honest dollar. They make it seem so simple, but their long buyback policy will likely trip you up. My loose leaf book I sent with a binder was re-quoted at $0 without any justification!! So when I followed up with this question,

Message: Hello, I received an email saying that an adjustment had been made to my order and it appears that the book I had sent was received on your end; however, the book price went to $0 in regards to my payment. I just was hoping to clear this up. Thanks!"

They sent me back this:

"Hi,
Here are the inspection notes from your order:
9780078112911 - wrong book, sent loose leaf edition - rejected and destroyed
We don’t buy loose leaf editions nor do we appreciate wasting money on receiving an apple when we quoted an orange.

Tina

Hi Matt,

Yes, we did provide you a quote for 9780078112911.

You sent us 9781259299216 which is the loose-leaf edition of the book.

We did not just "change your quote to whatever we please" - you did not send us the book for which you received a quote.

Had you ordered the bound edition of the book and we sent you the loose-leaf edition would you be upset? Would you not demand to receive exactly what you ordered?

"I know as college kids we are just trying to make the most money, but don't fall victim to these people." - so in your world Matt, you are allowed to try and make as much money from us as possible, but if we call out your mistake - we are rude and somehow taking advantage of people?

One of your books was sent in for authentication as you were emailed about, but unfortunately some emails get lost. You were paid promptly upon authentication and your check shows it was cashed soon after being sent, so unsure as to why you are trying to claim you never received a check.

Extremely rude and disrespectful; HATE this place.

I chose to sell my textbook with this website, because they offered the highest price. I sent my book over 2 months ago and I have yet to receive payment. These idiots have a phone number for no reason because no one even answers. Even the customer support agent was extremely rude to me as I am only looking for answers. She told me to "go get p*ssed off" at USPS for their negligence. It is funny because I really need this money because I have things to pay for and all they do is lead you on and play a waiting game with you. They could care less if you are satisfied, instead they curse at you. I have been back and forth with both USPS and them and this place is unprofessional, disrespectful. An outright scam. Unless you want to make your life difficult, I suggest not to sell your textbooks to this website. Try TextbookRush or Cash4Books. I doubt they would curse at you.

Hi Lauren,

It's interesting you call us idiots and leave out how you were cursing at our customer support people because the USPS lost your package.

We emailed you the tracking information showing we never received your package and asked you to contact the USPS. You became belligerent which is when you received a more terse reply. As they USPS lost your package, and you neglected to utilize the insurance we offer for just this reason, I'm not sure why CollegeFocus qualifies as "unprofessional and disrespectful", but it is your right to feel and say whatever you like on this platform. We are sorry the USPS lost your package, please insure your buyback orders with us or any buyback company that offers insurance to avoid issues like this in the future.
