Two years of writing a story about a character whose face I could see clearly in my head but couldn't describe well enough to anyone else. I sent Rivington Publishers a long, probably confusing brief with half formed descriptions and random references. The first draft came back surprisingly close one round of feedback later and the second version made me stop scrolling. That was her. My beta readers who had never seen the brief all said the illustrations matched exactly what they had imagined while reading. That's harder to pull off than it sounds.
