Disappointment

Everything was ok with the car and the overall experience was alright. Nothing exceptional, though.
The issue that I perceive as problematic is the part with the deposits. We upgraded (and paid extra) from Gold to Platinum to avoid a deposit of 900 eur, instead we paid 400.
On their site the explicitly state:
[Security Deposits can be made with a debit or credit card Visa & Mastercard and are processed by the Greek card payment company Cardlink. They are automatically released at the end of the rental agreement.]
I specifically asked how long it would take to get 400 eur back and they said 4 business days.
We returned the car on Saturday, 1 Nov, and when on 6 Nov the sum still wasn’t reimbursed, I sent an email.
They told me they processed the return on 4 November at 7:09 PM, which means, since all the bank transfers are inactive at that time, Wednesday 5 November.
They withhold the money on purpose, but later state as an excuse that for the cars given back on Saturday the refund will be processes the next Tuesday - something that isn’t stated anywhere.
This is not exactly what I would call Fair play.

While the release was processed the same day, the time it takes for the amount to appear back in the customer’s account depends entirely on each bank’s internal processing times, which can vary from 2 to 7 business days, particularly after weekends or holidays.

Seems affordabel, but ends up costly

I would recommend staying away from this rental company. What may at first seem like an affordable rental quickly ends up costing just as much as the more established and reputable companies such as Avis, Budget, Hertz, etc.

Even though I paid extra for their so-called *Gold Package*, I still ended up having to pay — yes, actually **pay** — a €1900 deposit. Alternatively, I could pay an extra €90 to avoid the deposit.

When I tried to pay with my Mastercard credit card, which has absolutely no spending limit issues (I’ve rented many cars and made larger purchases before), the payment was declined twice. I then transferred money to my Visa debit card and used that instead — and that payment went through.

After the rental period ended, it took seven days before the money was returned to my account, and due to currency exchange differences (since I’m Norwegian), I lost about €110. In other words, my car rental ended up being €110 more expensive than agreed.

I rent cars frequently for my business trips, usually with Avis, and although they also take a deposit, it’s always just a reservation on my card that is released upon returning the vehicle — I’ve never actually been charged, as happened in this case.

We’ll be going back to Crete next year, but we will definitely **not** be renting from this company again.

A solid rental car agency

I took an upgrade for insurance on the desk at Chania airport, because I thought 1800 euro deposit with gold insurance was too high (with platinum, it was 900 euros, a bit high still to be comfortable). Also the insurance still leaves unnecessary holes in it's coverage in my opinion. Definitely something to develop further, I think.

Anyway everything went smoothly and the contact person even returned after the while when we didn't figure out how to close the trunk door appropriately, our mistake.

Deposit return policy is as my experience 1-2 weeks after the rental period.

Great Car Rental Experience in Crete!

I rented a Mazda 2 Hybrid Automatic from Heraklion Airport, and everything went super smoothly. I had picked the Platinum insurance, and thankfully I did! While driving through the mountains, a few rocks fell from a cliff and cracked the windshield…. but the team handled it right away. They replaced the car instantly, no stress and no extra charges.

The staff were really friendly, and both pickup and drop-off were quick and easy. They also suggested taking a few photos or a short video of the car before leaving the parking lot, which is a great tip for peace of mind. Overall, a great experience would totally rent with them again!

Booked a mid-class Citroen C3 (or…

Booked a mid-class Citroen C3 (or similar).
BOOKING CODE 9OJR8MJ451 for 17 days.
Airport Arrival landing Sunday night at 02:30 am with golf Luggage.
Called the evening before if the car is ready in the night with flight No.WKXXX. Yes everything perfect they following the flight number and arrival. Extra Costs 50E+20E for night delivery. After landing 02:40 shut on the Mobile and had already several messages at 02:03 from rentcar.gr. "Where are you? you suppose to be here at 02:30". "Keep in mind that if you are not here until 03:10 you are going to loose your reservation with full cost as a non show."
Our normal luggage came on the belt 02:55. Called with rentcar.gr we are on the way. My wife had to search for the two golf luggages somewhere else (Bulky Luggage). I rushed to the rentcar.gr until 03:10.
Received a crapy Toyota Yaris with more than 15 scratches, defects, 3.70m length instead of 4.01m Citroen C3.
Golf Luggage fit only with the front seats at the forward limit. Complaining about "this is not a mid class car" similar to C3. He told me "yes it is, no other car available, take it or leave it at full costs." Additionally 900E Deposit which was charged to the Visa (not blocked!) He told me the booked "gold standard" does not include anything on liability.
On the booking we had the impression with "gold" everything was covered without reading all the general conditions thru.
Next day called the office to change the car.
They said yes and we arranged for Tuesday 06:00pm at the Airport. Received a call monday 14:00 on the golf course; "If you want to change your car you have to be here in 1h, as we need the car."
We refused as this was not the comittment and we don't want to stop the golf round.
And this all is not a matter of language; my wife is greek and speaks perfectly greek.
This is cheating!! Never ever again rentcar.gr!

Our team offered a vehicle change as soon as another car became available. However, you requested to delay the exchange because you were on the golf course, and finally decided to keep the current car.

The night delivery fee and related terms are clearly stated in our rental conditions and FAQ section, both publicly available to all customers before booking.

Misleading Terms and No Refund

I booked a car with Rentcar.gr on 4 September 2025 for €158. On the booking page, there was no clear mention of a deposit requirement. Only after payment, hidden in the Terms & Conditions, I discovered that a large deposit was required – something I could not afford.

Within the same hour of booking, I contacted the company to request a cancellation and refund, as the deposit was never properly disclosed before payment. They refused to refund me, even though I never received the service.

Their cancellation policy is extremely unfair and not transparent to consumers. They rely on fine print and hidden links instead of providing clear information at the booking stage.

I am now pursuing the matter with the Greek Consumer Ombudsman, as this company does not respect consumer rights or transparency obligations under EU law.

⚠️ I strongly advise others to avoid Rentcar.gr and book with a company that clearly discloses all costs and deposit requirements upfront.

No clear communication of their rental…

No clear communication of their rental terms and their customer service doesn’t. I ended up paying 140 euro and did not receive my car and not reimbursement. They would not rent me the car because I didn’t have my national license that was in another language anyways plus I was able to rent a car in Athens with just my international license with a known company but this company did not accept. Customer service is below zero and they don’t even care. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY

A valid driving license in physical form (minimum 12 months)

A valid ID card or passport

A credit/debit card for the deposit.

Additionally, as per international regulations, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is only valid when presented together with the original local license. Without both, we are not legally allowed to deliver a vehicle.

We fully understand your frustration, but these rules are not unique to our company — they are standard practice in Greece and most countries. Unfortunately, as the required documents were not presented, we could not proceed with your rental.

Really bad

Really bad. Difficult to find and so slow to respond that they said the car was automatically cancelled. Would do NOTHING, not even refund the insurance. Would NOT recommend. I, too, have saved the emails, text messages, phone log and WhatsApp messages that were either never answered, disconnected, or took a very long time to apply. It would have been so easy for them but they would just rather keep all the money and do nothing. Seriously, guys. Stay AWAY from this company!

Your reservation 1L7RW3NR71 was confirmed twice on 25 June 2025, including Google Maps links to our exact location and our contact phone number (available 07:00–23:00).

The declared flight Aegean A3338 landed at 12:21 on 7 September 2025. Our staff was present and waiting at the agreed 13:00 pick-up time.

No call or email was received from you or your clients at that time. The first contact came at 17:41, four hours later, after another rental had already been made.

As per our published and accepted No Show Policy, the reservation was automatically cancelled and no refund is applicable.

For transparency, we have preserved all confirmation emails, flight records, and correspondence as evidence.

The employee at the desk was super…

The employee at the desk was super nice, sent me the contract rules by email and provided a car in a few minutes. I signed the contract. She said she has to make pictures of the car. She even mentioned that the car has some signs of previous accidents and that for this reason she has to include this point in her report before she gives me the keys of the car. I didn't ask to see the pictures she had made. We had four days of a super wonderful holiday in Crete, the car (a little Hyundai) was super and i was really happy with it. At the moment of giving back the car, they said that there are two signs of accidents on the car. They show me the pictures taken before i started the rental, and the signs were not in the pictures. Why? Obviously because the pictures were taken months before. So i had to pay 885 euro of damages, which i did with absolutely no problem. However, they also want me to sign a declaration to explain how i did the accident. This i didn't want to do because i hadn't do any accident. So they became very angry and argued a lot. But i had to take my plane 40 minutes after, so i didn't bother to try understanding why they were so angry after i had paid 885 euro and they obviously should have known that there was no reason to pay. Still i give 5 stars because the car and the island were super good and i had been too stupid not asking to see the pictures in the day of the rental, it was my first time renting a car and i will certainly know it the next time. I also give 5 stars because i am so sad of the two employees being so angry, i hope with this they will read it and smile again and tell themselves that their life and job are not so bad as they seem to believe, after all

Very disappointing experience. I do not recommend.

I rented a car with the so-called "Platinum" insurance, which was supposed to cover the underneath of the vehicle. After a minor dent to the rocker panel, the company withheld the full €350 deposit without offering any clear explanation or justification from the insurer. When I asked for clarifications, they responded aggressively and cut off communication. Very disappointing experience. I do not recommend.

The customer selected the Platinum Insurance package, which includes coverage for underbody, wheels, and glass, with a reduced excess of €350. As clearly outlined in our rental terms—available both prior to and during the booking process—this is not a zero-excess policy. In the event of damage, the customer is responsible only for the pre-agreed excess amount, while the remaining costs are covered by the insurer.

In this specific case, the damage occurred to the rocker panel, an external part of the vehicle’s bodywork. The extent and nature of the damage were evaluated by an independent certified expert (WEDAT.EU). In accordance with the insurance terms, only the €350 excess—already pre-authorized as a deposit—was withheld. The full cost of the repair exceeded this amount and was covered by the insurance company.

To be absolutely transparent, we provided the customer with all relevant documentation, including:

The Police Report

The Certified Damage Assessment

Additionally, we engaged in 14 email exchanges with the customer to explain the process, share documentation, and provide full support. Therefore, any claims of receiving “no explanation” or of “cut-off communication” are entirely unfounded and false. We can prove this with full written records.

Unfortunately, after the customer’s request for a refund of the €350 excess was denied, we observed what appears to be a coordinated campaign of misleading and defamatory reviews across multiple platforms by the customer and associated individuals. This case has already been forwarded to our Legal Department for legal action, and we are treating the matter with full legal seriousness. We explicitly reserve all legal rights to defend our company and staff against false, malicious, or defamatory statements.
