A Clever .LY Domain Can Become a Very Expensive Mistake
It may seem cool, even affectionate to create a brand name ending in “.LY ” but that cute domain name could easily lead to a significant financial loss.
Before purchasing a premium .LY domain carefully read every condition relating to LIBYAN LAW, community standards, prohibited content and especially any references to SHARIA LAW.
I purchased VINE.LY through BrandBucket (Domain Broker) in July 2018 for a media business covering wine, food, music, and culture. In September 2019, the Libyan registry suddenly suspended the domain because the website included content about wine.
The registry explained to me in writing that music was not the issue. The problem was the “glorification and promotion of alcohol,” which it stated was illegal in Libya and contrary to its community rules.
This means the .LY registry ultimately controls what can be published, promoted, or sold through your domain, even if your business operates legally in another country. Your domain can be suspended and potentially deleted if the registry determines that your content violates Libyan laws or community standards.
By the time this happened, I had invested in the premium domain, branding, trademark work, website development, content, marketing, and search visibility. I estimated my company’s overall loss at approximately $60k
My warning is simple: do not treat a .LY domain like an ordinary commercial domain. Before purchasing one request the complete registry restrictions in writing. Confirm that your business, products, advertising, and future content will be permitted. Today I still have the same problem, and I can't use this domain as I still pay yearly to "own" it.
A clever domain name is not worth the risk if another country’s registry retains the power to determine what your business may say, promote, or sell.
