I recently took out a new policy on a camper van but had an issue validating my ID as I don't have a photocard driving license, which is one of the 3 required forms of proof. Today I contacted custome... See more

Principal Insurance Shocking Service
Principal Insurance has been, without exaggeration, one of the most frustrating companies I have ever had to deal with. Trying to get through to their customer helpline is an ordeal in itself. You are left waiting 10 to 15 minutes just to speak to someone, only to be told that actions will be taken, actions that simply never happen. Then you have to call again and again. Cancelling a policy should be straightforward, but instead it drags on and requires repeated follow ups. Getting a no claims bonus certificate, something that should be automatically issued, turns into a drawn out saga. You are told it has been emailed, but it has not arrived in the inbox, spam, or trash. You call back a few days later and still nothing. You chase it again and still nothing. Meanwhile your new insurer is threatening to cancel your policy because they think you have no no claims bonus, all because Principal Insurance cannot complete a basic administrative task. Emails to customer service do not help either. You receive an automated acknowledgement promising a response shortly, but that response never comes. You are left wasting hours on the phone trying to resolve something that should have been handled correctly the first time. Other insurers manage this process properly and send the no claims bonus promptly when you cancel, without any chasing. With Principal Insurance you are stuck in a loop of broken promises, missing documents, and endless delays. It is inefficient, stressful, and unacceptable. Avoid if you value your time and patience.
Communication sadly lacking and ignored for a refund
Contacted them on numerous occasions to try and resolve an issue with my insurance that was due to start. Emails sporadic to say the least and when I cancelled due to lack of communication totally ignored and was told I hadn't cancelled when I'd received an email from them confirming it this had been after an hour sat on a phone call. They then charged me £55 for cancelling on a policy which hadn't started. I should be invoicing them for my wasted time sitting on the phone and writing emails. If you need an answer quickly I wouldn't bother.

Had to make a couple of changes from the quote I received online and Ricky was very helpful in sorting this quick and easy. Nevertheless the best deal I got as I’m a new rider.

Beware this company not only wants your Card number, there want a copy of you Driving licence both sides, a utility bill for proof of address and more worrying your National insurance number. Try and cancel will cost you £55 even if its not even in Force. Another bad insurance company on these Websites.

Rubbish service
I got a policy out for a bike I was buying unfortunately the sale fell through due to mechanical issues so I emailed to ask to cancel the policy and see if I could get my deposit back minus what ever they need for the service etc. I have had no reply back off them and I have been waiting a week and have sent multiple emails to them the customer service is rubbish wouldn't recommend the company

Avoid Principal Insurance – £174.98 fee just to cancel a policy!
I strongly advise against using Principal Insurance. This company uses predatory financial practices against its customers. After selling my motorcycle and needing to cancel my policy, I was hit with an absurd cancellation fee of £174.98!
This isn't just a standard admin fee – it's blatant exploitation through hidden costs like "commission clawback" and non-refundable add-ons that are not clearly communicated at the point of sale. Despite me having 3 years of No Claims Bonus (NCB), the broker showed zero flexibility. Instead of a fair pro-rata refund for the unused period, I was punished with a massive bill just to close my account.
If you value your money and want a transparent insurer, stay far away from Principal Insurance. Their business model seems to rely on extracting huge sums from customers the moment they need to end the contract. Never again!
Bait and switch
Bait and switch - they bait you with a cheap price then ask lots of non standard questions that put the price up. I was quoted 950 then it went up to 1600
Avoid this company at all costs
I was quoted £623.03 online, only to be told at the payment stage that I had to call to complete the transaction. Once on the phone, the premium was suddenly increased to £973.90 — an outrageous and unjustified jump.
This feels like a classic bait-and-switch tactic. The online quote appears to mean nothing, and the entire process was a complete waste of time. I would strongly advise others to steer clear.

Friendly and helpful, spoke clearly and didn't rush through everything
Avoid - super high broker fees apply!
Dreadful customer service and excessive admin fees means this is an insurer to avoid.
I tired to make a simple address change on my motorcycle insurance and even though the insurer would make the change at zero additional cost to me, Principal Insurance charge a broker fee of over £60.
I went online and saw other deals for insuring via a different provider that were over £250 less than what I’d paid via Principal so I asked to cancel the policy and was advised a cancellation fee of £250 would apply! Shocking!
On a point of principle I cancelled the policy and I have now moved to Hastings who only charge £20 for simple address changes and won’t charge excessive cancellation fees either.
Principal are a joke. Every time I call them I’m on hold for over 10 minutes. It’s ridiculous service.
Bikers - avoid this company for your motorcycle insurance!
Great service from Jamie.
Good contact via phone, good service.
The wait to be answered was quite short, there were only a few options so the process was easy.
Jamie Ashton was very good. He sorted out the changes to my 2 motorbike policies and it didn't take long at all.
While motorcycle insurance can be expensive, I think I got a good deal.
Excellent service
Excellent service. Jamie Ashton was very helpful and dealt with all of my needs. Everything was made very clear and would recommend them to anyone else
