Overall a good experience. However, I'd like to enphasize their poor to no support when it comes to getting the Amazon voucher they claim to give you one month after your contract is valid. When I ask... See more

I did not take the insurance with them…
I did not take the insurance with them because after getting a quote, the final offer was a 40% price increase over it. The reason they say is that the initial quote was only based on my age, later there are other medical conditions that impact the price. But I wonder: is it really true that a meniscus surgery and an allergy can cause a price increase of more than 200€/month over the initial offer?
In my view they are not competitive with other private insurances and will offer unrealistic prices at the beginning, to arrive to the final offer with a big price increase. A dishonest and not transparent strategy, so better to avoid from the beginning.

I should've seen this from the start: Terrible service
If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I'm not going to stand for this as I learned I'm not the only one this has happened to.
I am a young (22yr) professional who just moved to germany and Ottonova came recommended by the agency that helped me with my relocation processes.
At first I was impressed by their swift responses to mails and readiness to help. During my enrollment process, after answering all the questions asked.
I was asked to go get a report from a dentist because I disclosed that I had taken out my wisdom tooth the previous year because it was stuck under my gum. This should've been the first sign for me to withdraw from their service but I chose to carry on because of the seemingly great service.
Fast forward to the next week, a medical practitioner came to get my blood samples (which I know is standard procedure), what shook me was that I was asked to go get the same examinations done again at a nearby family doctor about two weeks after the first examination.
I did all these examinations assuming they would be covered once my insurance process is complete. One week passed after handing them the report, two weeks...not a single mail from Ottonova. I logged on to their platform to see if I could know what the status of my process is, only for me to see that they couldn't insure me.
What was the result of the examination?
The report said I had high blood sugar levels, meaning I had to cut my soda & chocolate intake. I wasn't diabetic yet.
Seeing the message on my dashboard, I was angry at myself, knowing fully well that I saw it coming.
I would've been fine paying a higher tariff but wasting my time, and money like that was unacceptable.
Now I've got medical bills the size of an entire month's rent to pay, for information that was already known.
Terrible terrible terrible.

The private health insurance for generation "digital first"
As Germany has a very evident but unspoken two-class health system, I chose to switch to private insurance as quickly as I could. It has been great and Ortonova has shown me that it’s the right choice, especially for a „digital-first“ person like me.
I use the appointment concierge service every time I can and it’s a huge time saver. Funnily, they always tell my new doctors that I only speak English, even though I do speak German. 😅 It shows that the concierge deals mostly with expats (expat being the synonym of privileged migrants).
For a moment I felt a bit unsure about ottonova because I was diagnosed with ADHD after switching to ottonova and they retroactively asked me to send them all the medical records from my previous public health insurance to find if there was a history I hadn't correctly disclosed. It took a lot of back and forth with my previous public health insurance (TK), and multiple doctors. It stressed me out because I didn't know how "normal" this was. In the end they reimbursed all the neurologist and medication expenses, which is great, but I would have wished to at least get a call to explain what's going on. I understand why it was necessary, I just didn't feel they were on my side trying to figure that out with me at that time. This is to tell anyone switching to private health insurance to make sure you disclose everything correctly and ideally have past medical records at hand so you don't have to go looking for them in case something like my case pops up.
Just recently I also switched my kids to Ottonova, and am looking forward to seeing them getting much better treatment from doctors like I have since I switched. Setting them up was a breeze.

I came to germany in 2019 and switched to ottonova in 2020. Found them best private insurance provider in germany. Help is always available through their application or via call. Appointment with any doctor is very easy and fast. Reimbursement process for the claims is very smooth. I would recommend them with 5 star ratings

Onboarding process is easier for non German speakers but once the real deal starts some documents are not provided in English making it harder sometimes to understand what do do

High increase in monthly payments without reason
I am a scientist (Dr. in biochemistry) from the Netherlands, and needed private insurance because I received a research fellowship. I subscribed to a private insurance at Ottonova, thinking that I would pay 380 euros per month. Then, because I have a pollen allergy for a few weeks per year, they increased my monthly rate to 409 euros. That is almost 30 euros per month. I take ~10-20 pills per year which cost me 10 euros at a pharmacy. So paying 360 euros per year extra is really outrageous in my opinion. In addition, after being insured for 3 weeks, I receive an email that they updated their policy, and I now have to pay more than 20 euros per month extra again.... Why was I not informed about this. From the original rate that was proposed 1.5 months ago, I now have to pay more than 50 euros extra. This is unacceptable and I will start looking for an alternative insurance.

One of the best private insurance providers for expats
I'm an expat in Germany since 10 years and this is really one of the best (private) insurance providers. The app is easy to use and the concierge service is particularly excellent. You can schedule appointments through and have all the documents taken care off through the app.

Not English or Expat focused as advertised
Ottonova advertises as English friendly but when it comes to actual contracts and support only some of the content is available English. They specifically target expats but do not have provide the guidance to help expats understand what is and is not covered resulting is many issues of understanding post procedures. I've also had them reimburse me and later claim that they shouldn't have and ask for the money back, rather than accepting that they made the error and informing me that I would not be reimbursed for these claims in the future. Overall, I have limited trust in them.

Ottonova is by far the best insurance…
Ottonova is by far the best insurance partner I have ever used before. Extremely easy to use, fairly priced, fast in processing. The employees are very polite and helpful. I have business dental care insurance plan and I definitely will switch to their health insurance plan, as soon as my salary allows me to switch.
BMI cited as grounds for denial of insurance
Wow. Where do I begin. Ottonova was recommended by the company handling my relocation to Germany from L.A. The reps at Ottonova couldn't be nicer. Always cordial and helpful in every way.
They knew my my husband and I were middle aged and the only real health issues we had were seasonal allergies. I'm an athlete and he's older, but in excellent health.
Yet after weeks of asking us to get a medical exam, costing us €420 out of pocket, they denied us coverage. The results were "normal" according to the doctor that administered the tests, but to Ottonova, they were deal breakers warranting a denial of service. One of the reasons they cited for the denial was that my BMI was classified as "overweight". I'm 5'11/198lbs, a surfer and a cyclist. I'm an athlete and my built is big. That's apparently a health risk for Ottonova.
What a waste of time. We're going to try a health insurance broker to see what the alternatives are. As for Ottonova, I'd avoid it if you're an athlete, or God forbid, have had any medical history to speak of.
They're only looking to insure perfect human specimen, which is so wrong (and scary) on so many levels.
