Night Zookeeper
Fantastically Fun Learning
Night Zookeeper is a London-based children’s brand comprising of an online learning program, a book series and a TV mini-series. All of our products centre around the magical world of the “Night Zoo”. Our aim is to make learning fantastically fun for children aged 6 to 12 years old, and unlock their creativity in the process. Our reading and writing program has been used by over 1 million children worldwide.
Night Zookeeper was founded in 2012 by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson. Our e-learning product was originally launched in November 2012 as a creative drawing iOS app for kids, which went on to be recognised as one of the 50 best apps of 2013 by The Observer and The Guardian.
In 2014, we revamped the app into a web version which included more extensive writing elements, a dashboard for monitoring progress and personalised feedback from tutors. Over 1 billion words have been written by children on the site. Night Zookeeper is also used in schools by teachers worldwide in an effort to harness the power of digital learning in the classroom.
Throughout the pandemic, Night Zookeeper was able to act as a useful resource for families around the world to keep their children learning as schools were forced to close and remote learning took hold.
As of 2024, our program is used by thousands of children in several countries as a way to improve their reading and writing skills in a fantastically fun way, whether as part of a homeschool, in the classroom, as a supplementary resource, or simply a productive form of screen-time.

My kids are enjoying the Night Zookeeper…
Thank you, for making learning fun!!

This is a great platform to get children engaging with words and literacy in general. My child is a capable reader but VERY reluctant writer, which is why I signed up. He loves the word puzzles, creating new creatures and all the gamification of exploring the worlds, all of which he finds quite simple. However, he's able to spend hours on there without doing much/any writing! When he does do some, he needs a lot of real life (ie me) prompting to do more than the minimum couple of words to get to the next screen. Feedback from tutors is useful, targeted and engagingly written but he just skips over it. I'd like to see the writing aspect much more rewarded on there to increase engagement. So for us, I'd give it three stars, although I'm hopeful that willingness to engage with the platform generally will gradually lead to more writing. If you have a child who is struggling with all aspects of literacy, eg reading too, or you have a child who lives writing and wants a structured outlet for their creativity, I would probably give it five stars so I've averaged it out to four . The way the instructions are read aloud is great for emerging readers.

My daughter is being homeschooled for the first time this year and it gives her something she can do on her own that is fun and engaging! Much better than paper worksheets!!

We have been using Night Zookeeper this year for homeschool My kids love all the fun games and the best part is they are learning while having fun!

My daughter loves it but i wish it was more structured so it could be easier for parents to see what they have worked on and what they will be working on next. We homeschool and would just love it if there was an option to have more structure and be able to create a lesson plan or something.

My son's obsessed very cute. The cost was a shock though after a trial should prob make that more obvious. Otherwise great thanks.

We've done the trial and decided on purchasing for this year's homeschool. My 8 year old really struggles and shuts down immediately when we try to do any creative writing. I am excited to see his growth and confidence in creative writing. So far he is really excited to use this program that makes creative writing a game.

I love Zookeeper! It is very user friendly. I wanted to use it for just 20 minutes a day, but my daughter never wants to turn it off. Making the characters is her favorite part and I love how they ask many questions for them to answer for sentence making practice.

They got right back to me when there was an issue with my son's account!

I have two children, ages seven and nine, and in our homeschooling journey have tried a lot of different programs along the way. It can be a big struggle with most of their coursework being online to get them to engage with writing related activities long enough to get much out of it. This made me very sad because I absolutely LOVED writing when I was young, whether it was creative writing, an article for the school newspaper, etc. I had seen advertisements for Night Zookeeper and decided that we would give this a try.
Let me tell you, this has been a huge hit in my home! So much so, that the kids were wanting to sometimes replace other recreational activities with working on their Night Zookeeper tasks lol They are having so much fun creating their own characters and stories, and they get really excited when they get feedback. It's really helping my son, especially with his spelling, remembering rules about capitalization and punctuation, and he is beginning to use more descriptive words in his writing to paint the picture for the reader.
Both children really love how this is sort of gamified, so while they are definitely learning and putting what they learn into practice, it does not feel like just more school work to them. For me as a parent, I love their excitement when they are reading comments and exploring other children's character creations, etc, while still knowing that it is in a child safe space. That is very important in today's world with technology!
Whether you are a homeschooling parent, public school parent, just wanting to help your child achieve better grades, or have a future journalist on your hand, Night Zookeeper Is a wonderful tool to make learning more engaging and fun for your child with the smart use of technology! I highly recommend this for any parent looking to make better use of their child's screen time while giving them the tools that they need to be successful.

I cancelled several years ago and they charged me anyway. They said the cancel didn't go through so I couldn't get a refund but would cancel again so I wouldn't get charged again the next year...but I was charged the next year (last year) and I missed it. I was just charged again and filed a dispute with my cc company. My NZK account is showing as active again (!) so I cancelled a third time. We haven't used this program in 4 years and I've cancelled 3 times! Why does it keep reverting back to active?? Why can't they give a refund if they can clearly see we haven't logged on I'm years?? There is no option to delete my CC info unless I add a new CC first.

It wasn't a good fit for my child yet. I wanted to wait to start paying for this until. my child was ready. I sent an email to cancel the account and never heard back. I emailed directly after doing some digging and they are refusing to help, or to refund. with this terrible and dishonest customer service, they are losing a future customer. This really reads as a scam now. dishonest company practices

I am a military wife and just started homeschool for the first year with my two daughters! I originally found out about Night Zookeeper after all of my extensive research while preparing for this fun journey of homeschool! I have been VERY pleased so far. My daughters love it. They love the fun aspects of it as far as creating their little characters and writing stories about each one. I happen to love the tutor feedback. It's very positive while also being informative! I would highly recommend Night Zookeeper to anyone!
