5-Day Jiuzhaigou plus major panda bases January 22-26, 2024

From the moment our guide Rosa and driver picked us up at our hotel in Chengdu to when we departed five days later, our time with them was a marvelous adventure. Alvin Liu provided our party of three with the best driver and guide! As a 5-day, 1600-kilometer trip to Jiuzhaigou National Park, Jiawuhai, Shenshuping, Dujiangyan, Bifengxia, and Baoxing panda bases came to an end, I just want to say, “Thank you, Alvin, for providing excellent service which included an amazing driver, guide, comfortable hotels, and meals.” Everything was perfect, to say the least. Jun is a wonderful gentleman. He’s kind, thoughtful, and most of all a great driver. He made all of us feel comfortable and safe. Our eight-hour drive from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou with a couple of brief stops went by effortlessly.

Rosa the guide is second to none. She is so knowledgeable about pandas and told us she was into pandas long before she became a guide. She took care of me (the oldest in our threesome) like a mother hen. Jiuzhaigou is a big park and it would take all day to cover all the lakes and waterfalls. She made sure that I would take it slow because of the high elevation and often reminded me to stop and take some oxygen that Jun bought from a shop on the way to the park. Each of us got a canister. The weather was extremely cold (7 degrees below zero centigrade), the road was icy and Rosa provided me with heating pads for my gloves, shoes, and jacket...a testimony of how well-prepared and thoughtful she is. I am so grateful for her. She provided enough snacks, bottled water, and lunch for each of us. The feeling that we could count on Rosa and Jun was so comforting.

This is the second time since 2018 we have used Alvin’s service and hope in the future our paths will cross again. We certainly highly recommend Alvin and My Panda Tour for your adventure in China. You will not be disappointed.

I was directed to Alvin, the owner of My Panda Tours via several members of a private panda Facebook group I’m a member of.

Upon reaching out, Alvin instantly emailed back. After a few email exchanges he hand-tailored a three-day tour that including volunteering, feedings, visits with Bei Bei and Bao Bao, as well as few other panda related things I wanted to experience. In addition meals, as well as transportation to/from the airport were included.

My guide Rita was the best. She was extremely knowledgeable in all-thing pandas, Chengdu, and Chinese culture. Incredibly cheerful she answered all my questions. Which were many and often. My driver was wonderful too. Always on time and incredible.

It was truly a dream to be so close to these magnificent creatures. In addition to knowing the bases are research and breeding centers helping to repopulate the Giant Panda and get them back into the wild.

From start to finish every detail was attended to, every aspect seamless. The entire experience exceptional. I’m forever grateful to Alvin has his team. If you’re planning on visiting Chengdu to see the bears, My Panda Tour is an absolute must.

Our recent visit to Sichuan, China was made after selecting MyPanda Tour to plan the itinerary and provide the guides and drivers. My Panda Tour was selected because of our Facebook acquaintance with Alvin Shun H. Liu and personal recommendations from friends who had met him. He was patient and accommodating to changes to the itinerary. Except for one evening when an enthusiastic Aaron escorted us to dinner and to the Opera House, our guide was Jason Liang who took really good care of us and made the visit an enjoyable success. Our drivers were skilled and very accommodating. The highlight of our time in China was visiting our beloved pandas at Wolong and Dujiangyan panda bases, with volunteering at Shengshuping. We also spent time at the Yongling Mausoleum, Museum, and Park, the Shu Embroidery Museum, Dujiangyan Irrigation Area, Chengdu Art and Antique Market, and Huanglongxi old town.

We asked My Panda Tours to organize for us a 15 day family trip to Sichuan on November 2019. We visited several National Parks and reserves, as well as the Panda base in Wolong, the Giant Buda and Mt Emei. The trip run just smoothly from beginning to end. Our guide Alex was not only extremely efficient and experienced, but also the nicest person to travel with. Kind, knowledgeable, smart and interested in all topics, he met all our needs before we even felt them, and was always open to any suggestions or changes in planning whenever possible. He speaks very good English, and we learned a lot during our many interesting conversations on every topic concerning Chinese culture and lifestyle. And he was great with the kids too! Our driver, Mr. Jun, was a pleasure to ride with, it was only a pity not to share a language to communicate better with him (although Alex tried to teach us some Chinese, only our son managed to pick some up!).
The hotels were all nice and perfectly located for our needs. Alex chose for us a great variety of restaurants and different food options, which we also enjoyed very much. The car was always ready and the driving safe and enjoyable. We have no complaint, really! Thank you so much Alvin for the organization, and Alex and Mr. Jun for the hard work and great company! You made of our visit to you amazing country an experience we will always cherish.

There are just not enough stars….. The folks at MyPandaTour.com were incredible. Rarely does any business exceed my expectations but MyPandaTour.com did and did by a mile. At all times I felt safe, secure and comfortable. My Guide s were phenomenal, Alex was a walking encyclopedia of Panda’s and Jessica knows her history of Xi-an and the terracotta warriors. My Driver Mr. Lee was incredible. I do not know how he was able to drive in such traffic. If you have any desire to see ANY part of China with or without Pandas ( although I highly recommend at least 1 Panda reserve) MyPandaTour.com should be your starting point.

I contacted Alvin, the owner / expert on pandas, a few months back and he helped architect what turned out to be one of the most memorable travel experiences I've had. From start to finish every detail was attended to, every aspect seamless. Over the course of one week I participated in the following three programs:

1) One-day Panda Cub Volunteering at Wolong Panda Base; this is the only reserve where you can both feed and pet a panda cub. As other reviewers have noted, Kiki is an amazing, affable, extremely knowledgeable guide.
2) One-day Panda Volunteering at Dujiangyan Panda Base; this is the closest reserve to Chengdu where you can volunteer, and one of the former DC pandas, Tai Shan, currently resides here.
3) Four days of volunteer work at Bifengxia Panda Base; this is a bit farther away in Ya'an but if you have the time, I definitely recommend making the trip and staying overnight as the setting and staff are both spectacular.

I also booked transportation through My Panda Tour to Chengdu Airport in addition to car services to/from the bases. The drivers were excellent and the cars clean and comfortable. Alvin likewise went as far as to assist in locating a hotel near Bifengxia, which isn't as intuitive as you'd think when researching the area. I could continue to grant accolades endlessly so I'll finish with this — if you're traveling to Chengdu and intend on volunteering, hire My Panda Tour. It's an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.

My Panda Tour was amazing from beginning to end. Two of the three of us on the tour visited Chengdu and two panda bases a few years ago. Based on glowing recommendations from a couple of people I know who had been on trips with My Panda Tour, I corresponded with Alvin to plan a trip to Sichuan province for June 2019. We wanted to visit panda bases, but also see other aspects of Sichuan province life both in Chengdu and outside the city. Seeing the terracotta warriors in Xi’an was of interest to us too.

Alvin always responded quickly to our emails offering ideas and suggestions and asking us questions about our preferences. Alvin planned a 20 day tour for us that included multiple giant panda centers; Chengdu parks, entertainment and shopping; visits to a moon bear rescue, rural Tibetan towns, mountainous areas and nature reserves. A bullet train ride to Xi’an and the terracotta warriors was included. Our itinerary was very impressive but the trip itself was even more fun than we imagined.

Alex was our fantastic guide who was with us for the entire trip. He made sure every meal each day included food we liked. We ate a wide variety of regional Chinese cuisine and loved it. Alex was extremely knowledgeable about individual pandas, accompanied us while volunteering, took numerous photos and was so helpful in translating comments from the keepers and staff. He is fluent in English, easy to understand and has a fantastic sense of humor. He shared portions of the history of China and we gained a better understanding of life in China. He is just an ideal and caring guide.

We did run into occasional road construction outside of Chengdu. Our remarkable driver, Mr. Jun, was so professional and adept at maneuvering along roads that definitely needed repair. We had to take a couple of detours but Alex gave us a choice of detour routes and explained what we might see on each alternative route.

We stayed at the Wolong panda base two nights and took a night tour to the breeding center. It was amazing to stay at the center after closing time and visit pandas until dark. I could watch the antics the panda kindergarten cubs for hours! Volunteering with panda cleanup and feeding was really a lot of fun. Bars always separated us from pandas so we were safe. We raked up panda droppings and bamboo that was not eaten in the outside yard, then cleaned and disinfected the indoor space. Our reward was to hand feed carrots and panda cake to the pandas. I also took part in a new volunteer opportunity to carry a panda’s bowl of milk to him and stay with him while he lapped it up. It came with a pricey fee but I will always treasure those memories.

We enjoyed numerous hikes through lush green surroundings in mountainous areas and nature reserves. Although we did not see a wild panda we saw other amazing Asian animals. Throughout the trip we interacted with many friendly people and we loved talking to them with help from Alex. Alvin helped us secure Chinese SIM cards before our trip and we were able to leave extra bags with him when we departed Chengdu for Xi’an. He delivered them to us when we returned to Chengdu for the flight home. He provided us with delightful activities throughout our itinerary in addition to sightseeing. We enjoyed a painting class, made rubbings of stone steles, and had dinner with a renowned panda researcher and photographer. One afternoon we relaxed in a teahouse and Alex taught us Mahjong.

At the end of our trip Alex sent us a video of our trip and the many experiences we had. It is a great souvenir to have and everyone I’ve shared it with can see why I rave about this trip. Alvin and Alex, thank you so much for those exceptional three weeks in western China. I absolutely recommend My Panda Tour for your visit of any length!
