Great Product, Great Team - Grade 2 Listed Home

We moved into our Grade 2 Listed cottage in January 2021. It was built in 1885 and is a Tudor design with brick (cavity) walls downstairs and timber construction upstairs.

Listed Buildings have been exempt from EPCs since 2013 but I found a 2011 EPC with a G rating (worst). I could see from our viewings that the previous owners had not invested in energy efficiency improvements.

Two weeks after moving in we had a visit from Beast from the East 2 and I took some thermal images and could see that our home was glowing and Heating the Sky!

There are many myths regarding what works and improvements owners can make to Listed Buildings so I researched Historic England library and the secondary glazing market.

Before placing (Phase 1) order I contacted the New Forest National Park Planning Department and received a letter back from their Buildings and Conservation Officer advising:-

“Listed Building Consent and Planning Permission are not required to install secondary glazing, so the contractors (Mitchell and Dickinson) can be engaged for the final measurements and installation at your earliest convenience. The company are clearly experienced in working on heritage properties and their products and craftsmanship are of high quality, suitable for use in listed properties.”

From Sales (Dan, Ed and Kirsty), Planning (Rachel) and Installation (Dominic, Will and Matt) we have found M&D to be very helpful and professional throughout.

Listed Buildings are individual so will throw up obstacles requiring Project Managers to Think on their feet to find solutions. “Dom” was served a number of curveballs but he remained calm throughout identifying cost-effective solutions.

Payback for Phase 1 is calculated as 4.9 years but that was before our Electricity and LPG went up 50%!!

It is early Spring and we have had a few cold mornings. My wife and daughter have commented that the house feels warmer, already. As my son says “Happy Wife, Happy Life!”

We are very happy to recommend Mitchell & Dickinson Insulation solutions for Period or Listed Properties

Very positive experience

Tony and his team fitted 10 windows with secondary glazing for us. We are very happy with results and the service received. Fitting was performed very efficiently for a wide range of different windows with careful colour-matching etc. We have noticed the impact on temperature in the house (Georgian cob construction, Grade II listed) but don't notice the secondary glazing. There were some minor issues with two windows post fitting, but these were efficiently and effectively addressed by the team, with Tony himself returning to rectify in under an hour.

Luke, Zack and Matt's team

We chose secondary double glazing with some trepidation as our c17 mullions are very beautiful and we worried about spoiling them. We are delighted with the result, neat, tidy unobtrusive and hopefully will cut our energy costs! Luke and his team were a pleasure to have in our home, they have a great work ethic and took care to make as little impact to our lives as possible.Always bright and friendly and meticulous in their work.

Listed property - window insulation improvements

We have a listed building with many single glazed windows. We were losing a lot of heat, had terrible draughts, windows would not open / close and we hear a lot of noise from outside. M&D have completed work to tackle all of these issues, with general restoration work and installing Cosy Glaze. The team that came in were professional, respectful and understood how to work in a property with many quirks. Whilst older properties will never be perfect....the work carried out has eliminated / heavily reduced these issues. We can instantly see the benefits of what M&D have done, and i can highly recommend them.

Great team. great result.

The team came in to put 11 secondary glazing units in the house. Josh, Matt and Luke were very efficient, delightful to have around and they did a great job. I would recommend M&D. The expense is worth the expertise.

We live in a Grade II listed house…

We live in a Grade II listed house built around 1870 near the cold damp sea . The condensation every morning is not good and was starting to produce mold. I wasn’t thrilled about secondary glazing as aesthetics are important and as we just finished renovating I didn’t want to deal with more building mess and disruption .
Well I didn’t have too . Tim came early worked hard and left the house clean . I don’t really notice the glazing on the sash windows and the rooms are now warm and the house not damp .
Tim was so helpful , friendly and worked incredibly hard to make the experience easy for us . He succeeded.

A Friendly, Efficient Team

A friendly, efficient team who got on with the work well and cleared up well afterwards.
Ours is a crooked, timber framed home dating from the 1620s. Tony and his team coped with all the irregularities, odd gaps around doors and drafty windows. We now have a draft free home with secondary glazing to the windows and a roof space well insulated with thick layers of lambs' wool.
They ordered and fitted new window handles, so now they are all matching and in keeping with the age of the house.
Many thanks to Tony and the team, I highly recommend them to other people in old, crooked, drafty homes!

Mitchell and Dickinson fitted secondary glazing and loft insulation

Mitchell and Dickinson fitted CosyGlazing secondary glazing to the sash windows in my Grade II listed house as well as draught proofing and loft insulation. I'd really recommend their services. The difference in noise in the house was noticeable from the moment the first window was finished and the whole house has been noticeably warmer to the extent that I've been able to turn the heating down despite it being the middle of winter. The team were friendly and helpful from the office staff right through to the fittings team. A really fantastic experience and absolutely value for money.

We were delighted with the work done by Rob and his team. The house is significantly warmer and traffic noise is reduced. Our 500 year old house threw up all sorts of problems but nothing fazed them and they found solutions to all the problems. I would not hesitate to recommend Mitchell & Dickinson if you are considering having work done.

Tony and his team did a fantastic job on my windows. Very professional and pleasant to work with. The whole team from start to finish were spot on! I'll be having the rest of the windows in my flat completed by the team. Would definitely recommend to anyone needing work done on their windows.

Exceptional Window Renovation and Secondary Glazing

I have received excellent service from Mitchell and Dickinson.

Every part of the team was helpful and knowledgeable.

Keith and team who actually carried out the work were very polite and liaised with me daily to minimise disruption.

I was kept up to date about start dates; these had to change, which I fully understood when I saw how the team dealt with surprise extras needed for my quite dilapidated windows. Nothing was rushed or bodged. The windows are now far better than new and the house is so much warmer.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to recommend Mitchell and Dickinson; service standards this high are rare in any industry.

Better than we could have dreamed of

25 windows made draught-proof and given another layer of glazing, all immaculate and virtually invisible, despite the wonky window shapes of our ancient house. Superb and creative craftsmanship by Charlie Graham and his team, who also volunteered many extra touches to help the insulation process. We went in for this after switching to Air Source Heat Pumps, to reduce leakage of precious warm air. It wasn't cheap, but I'm so glad we took on M&D: they know what they're doing, and every inch is hand-made.

I had my reservations as to whether…

I had my reservations as to whether secondary glazing for a grade II listed Georgian house, close to Heathrow, could be effective for heating and noise reduction and done tastefully and then would it be worth the cost. Answer: yes.

Tony & Joe finished the work in 8 days rather than the planned 15 days; they were an excellent team. Tony was exemplary: friendly, well organised, clear communication, turning up early and steadily working his fine craftmanship to a well thought through plan. I am delighted with the end result: 9 windows that are repaired, working well and now make that part of the house significantly warmer and quieter. I still can’t get over how unobtrusive the appearance is. Highly recommend this company.

After a delay to the start the execution was faultless. Arrived at 8am every day and left at 4pm. 10 windows and 2 doors in 10 days including a rebuild of a very old window outside the quote. Tha latter was priced and extra timber acquired. All work was neat and surfaces covered, no loud musicand even made their own tea!

We had the whole house secondary glazed. Tony could not have been more professional or friendly. They were clean tidy , on time and nothing was too much trouble. The finished product is brilliant, hardly visible and keeping my once cold house much warmer. Thank you Tony.

Window restoration

We are very pleased with the restoration work carried out on the four original sash and case windows at the front of our house. The windows are now in beautiful condition and fully functioning, with much of the original glass and it's interesting imperfections retained. The cosy glazing has a smart appearance and is very effective. The job was carried out with skill and professionalism. Tim and George were a great team and were considerate at all times. Whilst it isn't great having windows removed in November, we would like to thank them both for a great job. We are very pleased to have found this company and very satisfied with our "new" windows.
