Mis-sold a product, inconsistencies from sales rep
Back in 2022 we were shopping around for bi-fold doors.
We invited Derek Whylie to our house to provide a quote. We wanted to have a traffic door in the centre, with all doors folding the same way. He told me that they manufacture bi-folds and they can do any configuration we want. He quoted me at that time.
We did not get the bi-folds done back then.
A few weeks ago, I re-contacted Derek and once again invited him around to discuss options now that we are in a position to proceed.
On Saturday 18th May, myself, my wife and Derek discussed the configuration and once again he confirmed that it was possible in the configuration we wanted and the Manchester windows will manufacture the bi-fold doors for us.
He said we had to pay more as it is a bespoke product, which we were happy to pay as was getting what we wanted. We signed the contract with written description of the configuration on the contract and were very pleased with the purchase.
Derek told us that the surveyor would come to measure up.
Upon arrival, I said to the surveyor what we were having done and he immediately said it was not possible. I explained that we have a contract and Derek told us it was possible.
I called Derek when the surveyor was present and had the phone on loud speaker and they both spoke and Derek was adamant that he was correct and the surveyor was wrong.
The next day I called the office and spoke to Tracey, who said that she will need to speak to Derek. I told her that Derek told me that the configuration was possible as Manchester Windows manufactures the doors. She said that the company does not manufacturer doors or windows. She seemed keen on getting me of the phone so she could speak to Derek.
I called Derek immediately to challenge what has been said by Tracey and he is adamant that they do manufacture the doors. He said that the office have made a mistake and he will be speaking to the surveyor when he is on site.
When I was talking to Derek about the configuration he kept talking about different configurations and when I mentioned the configurations that he was talking about would not work as it would hinder our patio corner sofa. He did not recall about the furniture position - even though he was stood next to it on the Saturday. He was very forgetful of a meeting a week ago, which raised a red flag for me.
He said he will call the manufacturers to ask about their doors. He said that he will call back after the bank holiday.
Derek did not call on the Tuesday and I waited until Wednesday at 5pm to see if he calls. He did not call, so I called him and left a message.
Derek called back and said that the solution is to have a separate configuration which is not what we wanted, started talking about sliding doors? He admitted he made a mistake and the windows he sold are not possible.
I told him that he has mis-sold a product which he could not accept, he said that he thought the configuration was possible and he simply made a mistake.
I re-iterated that is not acceptable as we made an appointment, signed a contract for installation in 5 weeks and we have now lost a week. He was partially apologetic but still did not think it was an issue.
I told him that I would contact the Director of the company to tell him about the incompetency of his sale, as he mis-sold a product and we signed a contract which should not have been offered.
I asked him if Manchester Windows is regulated and he said that it was, I asked by who and he said he wont tell me in case I say he is lying.
I also advised that I will leave a review on Google, TrustPilot, Checkatrade and other review sites to highlight his lack of knowledge.
His closing comments to me were “Do my worst” he then hung up.
I have cancelled the order and have zero trust in this company as there are too many inconsistencies in the offering to the actual product.
Manchester Windows has cost us time in 2 meetings with an incompetent sales person who does not know the product configuration and also now has cost us time in finding another supplier.
