I Almost Didn’t Take the Bartending Course — Glad I Did
A few months ago, I was sitting in my car outside the first class wondering if I should even go in. I had zero bartending experience, didn’t know anyone there, and honestly thought I’d probably embarrass myself trying to remember drink recipes.
By the end of the first night, that feeling was gone.
What surprised me most was how relaxed and real everything felt. The instructors weren’t acting like teachers reading from a script — they talked like people who had actually spent years behind busy bars. Half the class felt like learning cocktails, and the other half felt like hearing the kind of advice you only get after working late-night shifts for years. Stuff like how to stay calm when five people order at once, how to deal with difficult customers without escalating things, and even little shortcuts that make you faster without looking rushed.
I remember one class where we were practicing pours and everyone kept messing up measurements. Instead of making it awkward, the instructor laughed and said, “Trust me, every bartender starts by overpouring something expensive.” That kind of environment made it really easy to stop overthinking and just learn.
The hands-on part made a huge difference too. Watching videos online is one thing, but actually standing behind a bar setup, moving quickly, making drinks while people are talking around you — that’s what gave me confidence.
A few weeks after finishing the course, I got a job at Pacini. My first Saturday shift was absolute chaos. The machine was beeping, servers were calling drinks nonstop, and I remember thinking, “Okay… this is exactly what they warned us about.” Weirdly enough though, I wasn’t panicking. The training kicked in automatically.
Now I actually enjoy those busy nights. The rush, the music, the random conversations with customers — it’s fun in a way I didn’t expect.
Looking back, signing up for the course was one of those decisions that quietly changed a lot for me. I went in thinking I might learn a few cocktails. I came out with a new job, a lot more confidence, and honestly a completely different outlook on myself.
