The KandyMask story starts 12 years ago when Iannique Renaud decided to travel to China. While abroad his boy suffered a severe respiratory attack due to the high levels of pollution in the air. His son started turning blue and he had to rush his son to the hospital. Luckily they arrived in time and the doctors hooked him up to ventilators to clear his airways. After a night in the hospital, the doctors told Iannique that his son had severe asthma. This meant Iannique had to find ways to protect his son's lungs from contaminants for the rest of his life. Iannique, started researching filtration technologies so his son could live a normal life. He ended up building an air filtration system to protect his son's lungs while he was at home. Now that the inside had filtered air he turned his attention to protecting his son while outside. He embeds medical-grade filters into a reusable mask that his son would love to wear so KandyMask was born. For over a decade Iannique built one of the most respected filtration companies in Asia. In 2018, he decided to move back to Canada so his family could be free from the pollution in Asia. Little did he know that his years of filtration experience would come in handy more than ever.

This is an edit of my previous review based on new information provided by the company. Point taken, these are a multi-purpose mask and not specifically designed for the Covid pandemic. However, many, many more people are now using masks for pandemic usage in the majority if not every country around the world. Coronavirus particles are very small and an internet search states that they range in size between 50 nm to 140 nm. The virus particles can persist in air alone for hours in certain conditions, for example little ventilation, high humidity and without being attached to aerosol droplets. With the more virulent and contagious variants replacing the original corona virus, it is more important than ever to keep yourself safe, even if you are not a medical or health worker. Therefore I stand by my assertion that for a truly safe fit in the pandemic, you need to have over the head elastic straps. Otherwise the fit is not as good as it should be. If the fit is not very snug, while the mask is not completely useless, air leakage over the nose and around the mouth enables the very small virus particles to be exhaled and inhaled. However, most people during the pandemic seem to prefer the convenience of ear loops and since this product is designed for the market, it's better than no mask or cloth masks. In terms of fit, the ear loop solution may work better for some than for others. For me to have a very snug fit (as is medically preferable) I manually sewed on elastic straps in order to get a tight fit around the face.
I had no idea the lasso thingy or elastic strap provided with the mask (looked 100% like it was meant to be used with the little carrying pouch..) could also be used as a workaround for as over the head straps, although my husband figured out with much ingeniousness on his part that it could be attached and looped in a fancy way for this purpose. (it doesn't really comfortably work, imo). This information could have been with the other data sheets that came with the mask but it was not. How many people would have had a clue?
For pandemic usage, hopefully most people know by now that valves make it easier for you to breath but they are not recommended for protecting others. As a socially responsible person during this pandemic, I went with a non valve mask. With the elastic over the head straps the mask is slightly hard to breathe through but not too bad. Correctly fitted N95s are quite hard to breathe through. My thanks to the company for enlightening me concerning how long they have been around, as well as the reason they came about in the first place, which was to make masks available to the world for assistance with other environmental hazards (other than a pandemic, that is).
Dear KandyMask, Now that the pandemic is here, why not provide people an option of having either ear loops, or over the head straps as other higher quality mask makers are doing? I say the reason you are not doing this is it's cheaper to not to do so.

Regarding the comment about the red flag for offering valved masks. We have been making masks for a decade and valved masks have previously been the go-to type of mask pre-pandemic. You are correct that these types of masks are not for the pandemic but this is in no way a red flag about the company, it is quite the opposite. Their purpose is to offer excellent breathability and protection for people living around wildfire smoke, pollution, or people working in a dusty environment. Nowhere on the website do we say this is for pandemic protection as many of our customers pre-pandemic continue to use KandyMask for this type of respiratory protection. We believe that masks can solve a variety of problems when it comes to respiratory protection and we intend to be there for the people that need specialized protection. This is the same mask our Canadian founder designed to protect his asthmatic son after he had a severe respiratory attack due to pollution and hundreds of thousands of people all over Asia now use it for pollution protection which also explains manufacturing location as it is our largest market and manufacturing will remain closest to the polluted areas of the world as this is where we need to be when the pandemic subsides.
We also offer the nonvalve masks because when our founder moved back to North America with his family right before the pandemic we knew right away that the valve mask was not the solution for this type of protection so we removed the valves to have 2-way protection which is what is generally purchased now. We quickly moved to create filtration that was similar to N95 and have it tested against viruses and bacteria. Feel free to call the U.S lab in Utah to verify our 99.8% filtration report or check out the test reports. This is the same lab that does precertification testing for N95 masks in the U.S so there is no more credible lab than them.
In terms of headbands, since we are a consumer-facing mask and not meant for healthcare workers we decided that it would be more comfortable and convenient for people to wear earloop style. We still believe to this day that 99% of people prefer not to wear a headband and it was the right decision....that said we do include and lanyard in our package which can be used around the neck or adjusted to be a headband. It's like a medical-style headband but it is a workaround for those that prefer nothing around the ears.

KandyMask sizing issue
I have purchased and tried at least 20 different face masks in the past year. I wear eyeglasses so I am always looking for a mask that will reduce lens fogging. I have no doubt that the KandyMask is one of the best made masks available on the market today. The owner of the company was very responsive and easy to deal with. I originally ordered two masks in a size large, which fit my face except for the nose area which I found too large. I contacted the company and they allowed me to exchange them for a size medium. My new masks were not a perfect fit as I found them to be a little small for my face but the nose area was still too big to make an effective seal. So in conclusion, I think this mask is very good, but in my opinion, the top of the mask is made too big and does not effectively seal on top of the nose. There is a wire embedded in the nose area of the mask but it is not stiff enough. These masks are quite expensive but worth it if they fit your face properly.

Medium mask with 2 air holes for breathability.
Thank you for a light weight mask that works for covid 19 protection and allergy sufferers.
My only problem is with the bands that go around your ears. They are too long and I need to put little knots in them so that the mask fits snuggly.
I bought the medium and even though i am near the top weight for this mask, the fit is too loose.
Again I like the protection it offers me so thank you .

Living in Oakland, we have had weeks of hazardous smoke days when going outside isn't healthy. The valves have filters in them and make breathing so much easier. I can take daily walks and feel protected. Washing them, you see the grey particulate matter in the water, and know it didn't go into lungs. Where there are stores that say "no valve masks"-- that's because not all valves have filters like this one-- I just put a loose fitting mask on top and it's fine.
