Most Confusing Hosting Dashboard I Have Used

I recently purchased IONOS hosting because the first-year pricing looked extremely attractive. The offer included a free domain, unlimited websites, and large storage at a very low price. On paper, it looked better than many competitors such as Hostinger, BigRock, and GoDaddy.

Unfortunately, the real experience was one of the most frustrating hosting experiences I have had.

The biggest issue is that the platform is not developer-friendly at all.

I use Cloudflare for DNS and CDN management, which is very common among modern websites. However, I discovered that IONOS does not properly support free SSL for custom-added domains in a straightforward way. My website only worked with Cloudflare Flexible SSL. The moment I switched Cloudflare SSL mode to Full or Full (Strict), the website stopped working completely.

This clearly indicates that proper SSL was not active on the server side for my custom domain.

What makes this worse is that competitors like Hostinger, BigRock, and many even smaller hosting companies provide free SSL certificates for custom domains without such complications. In IONOS, SSL only worked for the domain I received directly through their promotional first-year offer. Adding additional custom domains and enabling proper SSL became unnecessarily difficult and confusing.

As a modern hosting platform, this is unacceptable in 2026.

I also faced major technical limitations:

* Difficulty using Cloudflare properly
* Redirect loops caused by SSL configuration conflicts
* Problems using even basic `.htaccess` rewrite rules
* No clear Apache rewrite handling
* Complex domain-to-webspace connection process
* Confusing directory structure without standard folders like `public_html` or `htdocs`
* Hard to configure multiple custom domains
* No smooth clean URL/rewrite support experience
* SSL management was extremely unclear
* Shared hosting environment feels restrictive for modern PHP development

Even uploading a basic `.htaccess` file sometimes caused redirect loop issues and site failures, making development frustrating and unstable.

The dashboard itself is also overloaded with promotional banners and upselling instead of focusing on actual hosting management. Important settings are harder to locate because of the cluttered interface.

Another disappointing area was customer support.

The AI assistant could not solve technical issues properly. Live support availability was inconsistent, and callback functionality did not work correctly. For a company advertising 24/7 support, the actual support experience felt weak.

The onboarding process was also unnecessarily complicated. Connecting domains and hosting should be simple and mostly automatic in modern hosting platforms, but here I spent hours manually figuring out directory mappings and configurations.

Additionally, payment support was poor:

* No UPI support
* Limited compatibility with RuPay cards
* Required PayPal workaround in my case

The only strong advantage of IONOS is the low introductory pricing. That is honestly what attracted me initially. However, after using the service, I feel the platform is not suitable for serious developers who need:

* reliable SSL handling
* Cloudflare compatibility
* clean rewrite support
* easy multi-domain management
* developer-friendly hosting controls

For beginners, the complexity can be overwhelming. For experienced developers, the restrictions become frustrating.

Personally, I would not recommend IONOS for modern PHP/web application development unless major improvements are made to SSL handling, dashboard simplicity, and developer support.

Exceptional Representative Deserving Recognition

I unfortunately don't recall the representative's name, but I want to make sure this feedback reaches the right person. He was efficient, calm, and professional throughout our entire interaction, truly the best customer support experience I've had with IONOS. He knew exactly how to handle my issues without hesitation, and his expertise and composure made a real impression. Honestly, he's the type of representative who should be training new call center staff.

Lee was extremely helpful in cancelling and updating a subscription for one of my services through IONOS! Chris Gomez Went Above and Beyond

I was having questions about the Site, Scan & Repair plans and needed more clarification on what was covered and the differences between the options. While trying to read more information about one of the plans, I accidentally signed up for it. I called customer service, and Chris Gomez assisted me.
Chris was very helpful and took the time to explain the plans so I could choose the one that best fit my needs. He also helped me with two additional issues, including getting access to the back office of my website. He even offered guidance on where to find help for uploading information to my website if I needed it later.
He was patient while I gathered the information he needed and made the entire process much less stressful. I really appreciated his kindness, patience, and willingness to help.
