Clearly, I’m not the first person to get scammed by InterNations. They charge $19.95 for a platform that offers nothing more than what’s freely available on social media.
I misremembered my free period, and as soon as I saw their charge, I immediately requested a cancellation and refund. Not only did they refuse, but they continued billing me for two more months—charges I didn’t notice right away due to traveling.
I’m beyond frustrated with companies that exploit customers through deceptive billing and a total lack of integrity. If you're considering InterNations, proceed with caution.

People should be aware of the implications of dealing with an unethical conpany. In my case, my credit card was replaced and they couldn't charge next year's renewal fee, so they immediately suspended my membership yet they are still threatening me with a collection company when no services whatsoever have been rendered! It's like if you don't pay your Netflix subscription, Netflix cancel your account, and takes you to court for the future year of not-viewing... And of course, you can't even access your account page.
A very unethical behavior, disgraceful. A scam.
EDIT: Below, Internations deny that they block access to the account. Well, this is the pasted content of the notice you see if you try to access your account, followed by the "Enter your card details" link.
Pity I can't post an screenshot. Just to show how dishonest they are:
"Payment for your Albatross Membership was due on 13 February 2025, but we were unable to process the charge. You have been notified both on the InterNations website and by email that this payment is overdue, and your account is now frozen until your subscription fees have been paid.
To get your account back and avoid further legal action, please settle this charge immediately — we reserve the right to transfer the claim to a debt collection agency if this bill remains unpaid."

Unacceptable and Dishonest Practices – Stay Away
Internations deliberately makes it extremely difficult to cancel a Premium membership or impossible...
There is no clear cancellation option. They falsely redirect users to manage the cancellation via Apple, even when no Apple subscription exists.
I wasted over 30 minutes trying to cancel, and my subscription is still active — meaning I will now have to take further steps to block future charges myself.
This behavior is a clear example of unfair and deceptive business practices, intentionally creating barriers to cancellation and wasting customers’ time.
It reflects a lack of transparency, dishonesty, and disrespect for consumer rights.
Stay away from this platform unless you want to be trapped into ongoing payments you never consented to.

Real scammers.
This company ripped me off with their Albatross membership which got renewed and I asked immediately to cancel it and their "customer service" answered me two weeks later in order to buy time so that I get charged for another billing cycle. I feel pity for this company. I do not recommend it at all!

The Company responded to my Email very clearly and fulfilled my request.

I requested cancellation of my membership in 2023, however it has still not ben registered nor accepted by Internations, until this day. I finally got confirmation that they cancelled my membership.
This is a deceitful and stealing organization with events that are mediocre at best. They have no interest in actually encouraging connections, but are merely focused on grabbing money from its members.
I would not suggest anyone ever to sign up with this organization. A complete waste of time and money

I’ve had a frustrating experience with InterNations regarding their membership policies. After facing an issue with refunds and cancellation, I attempted to contact their support team multiple times—only to be met with complete silence.
It appears that once a customer raises concerns related to refunds, the platform becomes unresponsive. This lack of transparency and accountability makes me question the platform’s integrity.
For a service that promotes global connection and community, it’s disheartening to see such poor communication practices. I would caution others to be mindful of this before committing to a paid membership. A genuine platform should prioritize its members' concerns, not avoid them.
I hope InterNations improves its customer support moving forward.

Declined membership without providing a valid reason. Way to pursue your mission of making expats feel welcome 🙌

The intellectual gravitas of those who participate in the discussions I've participated in are most suited to a classroom of 8 year olds! If as I did, you run foul of the moderator (who displays all the talents of an insecure and controlling personality) for whom any comment that falls outside of her narrow purview is met with unwarranted and quite frankly offensive responses. She blocked my use of the "Hand Emoji" and then criticizes me for not using it! She is only comfortable when handling comments which clearly demonstrate that the questioner displays little or no knowledge of the subject under discussion and then accuses me of posting messages which are "demanding and aggressive," i.e. I pose challenging questions for which she has no cogent response. Ironically the subject matter, the Moral Compass is a subject that I have studied for decades and yet the moderator in this case displays all the characteristics of one for whom the meaning of which completely eludes her! Her reaction is to block my comments and also, not unsurprisingly has banned me from her discussion platform! Classic case of "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!!"

I was a member of Internations for many years and attended their events in Moscow occasionally. In 2022 I moved to Portugal and found that my account with Internations was no longer recognised and I tried to register again. And got the message that their admin rejected me, because they care a lot about who joins their community! Guys, I completely understand that you "shut down" your activities in Russia back to 2022. But if you think you can impose "personal sanctions" against me just because I'm Russian and was born in Moscow (the only information you asked for when I registered) - you're not an "expat community", you're "the community of prejudiced opinions", and I'd like to stay away from such a community, indeed.

I keep receiving emails for many years after unsubscribing at least 20 times & sending emails telling them to stop.
They are pests and leave me no choice but leave a bad review. Maybe now you’ll stop with constant emails??

The idea of connecting expats is great, but my experience with this platform has been extremely disappointing.
I signed up based on a recommendation. Within minutes, I got a message from a young woman (not an admin) saying “hi.” Strangely, she isn’t listed in the app’s directory or on social media under that name, which seemed suspicious. I asked both global and local admins if this was common—no response.
Next, I signed up for a local lunch event. When I arrived, I found out the venue doesn’t even open for lunch.
After that, I couldn’t access the app/website. I tried resetting my password over 10 times—no reset email. I emailed admin 5 times—no response.
Out of frustration, I messaged one of the founders, Malte Zeeck, on LinkedIn. The next day, I got a response from Christian Hegemer, who explained they were having technical issues and invited me to rejoin. I tried 4 times, but each time my application was declined. I emailed admin another 5 times—still no response.
It’s now March 12, and my first email about these issues was on February 16—almost a month ago.
Besides that, the app’s messaging function is slow, and I can’t comment on the quality of events because the one I signed up for never happened.
Even if they are having technical issues, how can you trust them with payment details when they can’t fix this in a month and have zero customer service?
I completely understand and appreciate that they have some form of screening of members. I'm just a bit confused how I can be accepted as a member (and they take my payment details!), Christian tells me they were hacked, so I need to reset my account and then they decline my membership application. Something just doesn't add up.

AN ABSOLUTE SCAM!!! DO NOT EVER USE THIS APP OR PAY THEIR MEMBERSHIP FEES!
My account got HACKED as soon as I paid the 6 months membership fee on their APP, and I sent at least 10 times of Password Reset request, 0 response from their website or customer service team. WTF I'm going to report this APP / Organisation to my bank for financial FRAUD asap!!

I would like to share my deeply troubling experience with InterNations. During several events organized by this platform, I encountered inappropriate behaviors from certain participants, including harassment and unsolicited physical contact. These incidents have created an unhealthy and unsafe environment for members, particularly women.
Moreover, several of my friends have also been victims of such misconduct and have chosen to unsubscribe from the platform, disheartened by the lack of measures taken to ensure participants' safety. It is concerning that these behaviors appear to be tolerated, or even ignored, by the organizers.
I strongly advise against using InterNations for anyone seeking a safe and respectful network. The safety and well-being of members should be an absolute priority, which does not seem to be the case here.

Now I am again enjoying the InterNations plat form. Special thanks to Marcel & team InterNations for understanding & help as an old member. And appreciated the security measurement of the member credentials as well. All the Very Best.
