Poor quality 3D data
I reached out to this company about the 3D scan data they sell for the C5 Corvette. They offered the data split into specific areas of the car or you could purchase a scan of the entire vehicle for $800 US dollars.
I explained to them through Email that i was looking to reverse engineer a set of front fenders for 3D printing and I required a clean scan of the fenders dismounted from the car that included all mounting data. They assured me that other companies had used this data to create parts for sale so I felt pretty safe.
I purchased the fender data and received it about 1-1/2 days later in 6 different files on Google drive. When I opened the files I realized that the outside of the fender was scanned while still on the car and the inside of the fender was in a separate file. The outside scan had no clean edges for me to work with since they just cut away the rest of the vehicle and it was missing a lot of details, the inside scan was better but since so much of the outline was ragged & incomplete I have no way of using this or meshing the drawing together to create a complete fender. The remaining files were largely unusable for anything.
I had expected to receive a scan of the complete fender inside & out and not multiple pieces of the same part considering it was over $200 Canadian. I did not get what i had expected and I would not recommend this company for any 3D data unless you're simply looking to make some exterior bolt on parts.
I will be purchasing my own 3D scanner and plan on making the data publicly available for free so others don't have the same issue.
