I wish I could give them negative stars. We all know how incompetent the government is with just about anything and everything they touch. BUT my god, nothing worked. Couldn't reach customer service, links on their website wouldn't work. Emails to customer service would always trigger errors. SUCH A JOKEEEEEEE

The Only Thing Getting Scanned Here Is Our Patience

My plates are registered, transponder stickers are properly mounted on the windshields, and a valid credit card is on file. Despite this, the system repeatedly fails to read the transponder and instead resorts to license plate scanning — then has the audacity to tack on $40 invoicing fees for its own scanning failures.
To top it off, the credit card on file — which works perfectly fine everywhere else — somehow can't be charged, resulting in additional fines. If the account information is already in your system, why are customers being penalized for your technology failing to use it?
This is textbook Illinois bureaucracy: collect money, deliver nothing, and make it the customer's problem.
Drive from Florida to Illinois and you'll enjoy 12 hours of smooth, well-maintained, toll-free highways. The moment you hit Chicagoland, you're paying tolls to drive on some of the worst roads in the country — potholes, uneven pavement, debris everywhere. For what amounts to a world-class toll collection operation, the infrastructure it supposedly funds is an embarrassment. Illinois is a 3rd-4th world country - good job Ipass + Ilinois tollway.

Illinois tollway people are terrible

Rented a car. Went on to the Illinois tollway site to register the rental car. Listed it as a passenger car instead of a fleet car. Got charged by the rental car company plus a fine.

Illinois tollway people are terrible. Registered the rental car on time at the correct time of toll, didn't matter,.got charged extra by the rental c as r company anyway.

If I made a crappy website in private industry as bad as the Illinois tollway people and charged people because of the stupid website I would not have a good business. But I guess it's good to have a total monopoly like these a-holes.

Website is a joke, customer service is rude

They billed me for 3 tolls one way, 1 toll on the return trip, and now they are saying it is unknown when the other tolls may show up, not denying it could be 10-20 years from now that I have to constantly manually check to make sure my credit card on file is up to date. It's already been over 60 days, and they are just saying I have to keep checking to see if a new invoice is added.

My first call when I tried to explain, they hung up on me, second call, Melanie, was extremely rude and refused to let me speak to a manager for about 40 minutes even after asking numerous times, was rude, argumentative, and just kept repeating that it can happen whenever we make a match, just keep checking.

They also removed my credit card without any reason except "your bank told us to", so I have to constantly check, for a state I don't even live in. And their "notifications" don't always come in. I have it set to email and SMS, but I didn't get any notification that there was anything on my account until I got an invoice for over 2x what I owed in tolls. Their response is just, well, that's how our system works. Even when an invoice is added to your account, we don't inform you except by mail. So they are saying I need to, for as long as I own this license plate, have to keep checking and keep my information updated, forever, or face fines, and possibly being sued for not paying tolls they can't even define after 60 days.

Tollway taking advantage of people for more money

The Illinois tollway is a joke that is totally fine with taking advantage of people! I am not from Illinois and have never encountered a tollway where you HAVE to have ipass otherwise you are going to be charged almost $60 for under $20 worth of tolls!

They decided to get rid of booths to pay there but never posted anywhere for people entering that you better have ipass or you will be charged exponential fees. Then when I call to ask about said fees I am told it’s because they are late even though I called after receiving the FIRST bill!

I have never been on a toll road that not only does not give you the option to pay right there but then penalizes you for driving right through when there is no where to pay or other way through!

They should be ashamed!

If you want to change the “normal” that is fine, but do your due diligence posting said changes for those unaware or take responsibility when someone is being penalized for not knowing when there was nothing posted for them to know!

We were just trying to take a family vacation after our newborn had a very rough entrance into the world that put its toll on all of us! Now unfortunately the fun family trip that was much needed for our sanity will always be tainted with this AWFUL DISRESPECTFUL experience and Illinois tollway customer service has no care in the world about it! Simply just tells me “well it is what it is, that’s what you owe, it’s on you”!

My online account showed I owed $0.00…

My online account showed I owed $0.00 and I checked it regularly. We only travel once every few years from Michigan to Wisconsin an d back. And the tollway took some auto payments out during Feb and March. And now I got an invoice saying I owed $30+. So I’m looking at my online account owing $0.00 and an invoice in my hands saying I owed $30. Only a government bureaucracy could have those kind of opposing things be true at the same time. And this is not an April Fools joke but dealt with it April 1st. Most payments run 30 days. The 14 day system Illinois has is really one off. My gosh!

I am a RV rental company based out of…

I am a RV rental company based out of Texas. I received a notice for the Illinois tollway, for while a rental was out. It was the 1st notice I'd received and I noticed for every toll there was a $3.00 invoice fee on top. By the end of the bill the invoice fees were 161% higher than the tolls themselves. I called inquiring about this b/c I didn't understand it since it was all sent on one invoice on a single piece of paper. I was told that b/c I didn't call to pay the tolls before the invoice was sent that's why there was so many invoice charges. I explained that it was a rental and it was out on rental so how was I supposed to know that the renter even went through Illinois let alone acquired tolls. I also told them in Texas we get one invoice fee not 161% more than the tolls. I was told Illinois does things differently than Texas, I said must be why everyone keeps moving to Texas b/c you're right we do things differently.

For the last several weeks trying to…

For the last several weeks trying to head to work on the Chicago skyway ..you only have two options open, and the rest are exercise pass or closed. then when you get up there to pay, the machines aren’t working, they’re asking you to let them take a picture of your car and bill you for it. As high as the tollway cost there is no way in the world that this back up should happen all the way back down the expressway!! they need to let everyone on here go through for free if you can only find two or three workers to show up and your machinery isn’t working.

Traveled to Chicago over Labor Day…

Traveled to Chicago over Labor Day weekend. The toll plazas have the amount you should be charged on a sign near the plaza. My wife kept track of all our amounts like a hawk. A few weeks after the trip, we got the bill and it's more than double what we calculated. I called the customer service line and talked to some lady for almost 45 minutes and all she could tell me was the amount they were charging for each plaza, which definitely didn't match the numbers they had posted on the actual road. I ended up paying just cuz I was sick of being on the phone, but don't trust this company, they are a bunch of thieves. We will be driving the extra 25 minutes to avoid the tollway next time.

Gmail doesn't work when signing up for broken website

Broken website does not send confirmation email to my email after trying to sign up for Pay-by-Plate. By the time I receive the e-mail in my inbox, the link and verification code have already long expired. Illinois Tollway would have been happy to charge me fines due to delays caused by their own website issues, I'm sure, if I had not figured out that for some reason signing up with a Gmail account causes this issue. I worked around it by signing up with a Yahoo e-mail.

Trying to charge extra for a paid invoice

Sent in my invoices to pay off my fines, sent them both in the same envelope. Only one of them was paid off and the other was apparently ignored and are now trying to charge me more for "not paying" the second invoice.

I registered my plate ONE MONTH before…

I registered my plate ONE MONTH before traveling to Illinois. I checked my account after returning home…I even emailed them asking why my credit card hadn’t been charged yet. I finally got a paper bill. Each toll was $1.50 & they added an extra $3 for each toll! What a bunch of crooks!!! That’s why I left Illinois 40+ years ago! They’re a bunch of thieves who care nothing about citizens….only stealing your hard earned money!!!
There’s enough complaints here, we can file a CLASS ACTION SUIT against the state & their crooked tollway system!

Completely shit customer service!!! We could barely understand her mumbling, she had us repeat ourselves multiple times, and kept getting stuff wrong. It took almost an hour for something that should have taken five minutes.
