Misrepresentation Ignored, Buyer Blocked – Avoid i-bidder.com

My recent experience with i-bidder.com has been very disappointing and raises serious concerns about how the platform supports its auctioneers.

I placed a successful bid on a vehicle through i-bidder.com, listed by Richard Maze & Co Auctions. The vehicle was advertised with “Warranted Mileage: 66,678”. After the sale, I obtained the manufacturer’s service history, which proved the vehicle had already exceeded 82,000 miles back in 2018, making the warranted mileage entirely false. The car was also a Category S write-off, yet this was only disclosed in vague wording – “Sadly on the register” – instead of being clearly stated in the main description.

When I raised these issues with Richard Maze & Co, they refused to acknowledge the misrepresentation and instead issued daily revised invoices, adding late fees and storage charges, despite the sale being formally in dispute.

I then raised my concerns with i-bidder.com, but rather than protecting the integrity of their platform, I received an email notifying me that I had been blocked by Richard Maze & Co. i-bidder explained that this is a facility they provide to auctioneers and that my block would be visible to other auctioneers across the network. In effect, instead of investigating a clear case of misrepresentation, the platform enabled the auctioneer to penalise me further.

By allowing auctioneers to misrepresent vehicles and then blocking buyers who challenge them, i-bidder.com risks supporting questionable practices and discouraging transparency. This approach is deeply concerning, and in my view, undermines trust in the platform entirely.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend i-bidder.com and would urge extreme caution when using their services.

Hi Gareth,

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We understand how concerning and frustrating it must be to feel that important details were not made clear in a listing, particularly when it involves a significant purchase like a vehicle.

To clarify, i-bidder.com provides the online platform where auctions take place, but auctioneers are responsible for their item descriptions, terms, and the bidder approval process. We do take reports like this seriously and your comments have been logged internally, as they help us continue working with auctioneers on best practices, transparency, and bidder confidence.

We’re sorry to hear that your experience has left you feeling let down. If you would like further assistance, please reach out to us directly at customersupport@i-bidder.com.

Great Service. Do Your Due Diligence and You'll Be Fine

I read around 100 bad reviews before placing a single bid, and my assumption then is my conclusion now -- i-bidder is great, a lot of people just don't do their due diligence.

Auction houses I've had personal experience with so far are Kingsland Auction Services, International Auctions (Huddersfield location), and Castlers Auctions. I had absolutely no issue with any of them and would happily buy from them again. I researched as much as I could about them before bidding, and felt the most confident with Kingsland as they have plenty of Google reviews. They were brilliant. With International, I'd heard that their Accrington location has issues but their Huddersfield one was a lot better. I ordered from their Huddersfield location and can confirm this! Lastly, I'd seen nothing about Castlers but decided that, based on their detailed photographing of lots, the risk was worth it to me. And it was very much worth it! I received everything from them the quickest of the three houses as well.

I've also seen a few auction houses use AI listings, and whilst I've not dealt with any seller that does this, they do make me suspicious. Why wouldn't they just show a real photo if they had the stock? Use your common sense and read reviews where possible. Within TrustPilot you can search by keywords -- use this to your advantage, especially if there's nothing else available to you e.g. a separate website or Google reviews.

Now, to address the common complaint of being charged more after bidding: on literally every single lot there's an underlined piece of text right under where you place a bid that says "Additional fees apply." If you click that, it shows you the commission and VAT that that auction house takes. It doesn't even open a new tab, that's how easy it is. (By the way - if an auction house has their own website, the commission is usually lower than on i-bidder as i-bidder takes a chunk of commission to keep itself running.) The fact that people miss this is astonishing, and it is *not* a reason to criticise i-bidder whatsoever. It's like if you bid on one of the auction houses in Guernsey for example, and then got mad that you had to pay extra VAT on importing it to the mainland UK when those houses state it very clearly in their terms.

Now for the condition/functionality of items. The *vast* majority of stuff on i-bidder is customer returns, liquidation items, etc. With those lots, that means there's a pretty reasonable chance that the item was returned for a good reason, including non-functionality. The auction houses simply can't test every item though. On one of the auctions I bid on, there were 3700 items. Ensuring each of them works, on top of taking detailed photos and writing the listings, would be a huge task, especially when they do multiple lots that size a week, and are literally selling them as untested returns. The reason you can get stuff for so cheap is because of this fact -- the fact it might be broken and just a hunk of plastic and metal.

You also need to consider that, historically, you would go in person to the auction house to inspect each item before buying it. The fact that we can browse items and bid from our phone at home is really, truly wonderful, but it does also bring up this barrier of potentially misleading listings. So, if anything isn't fully detailed (i.e. shows everything from every angle and isn't a stock photo), you need to decide if the risk is worth it to you personally. Or you just straight up need to visit in person, especially for higher value items like cars.

Anyway, to my point. i-bidder is great. I got a ton of good quality stock, and a few things for myself as well, at a really great price. About 5% of the items I received were either incomplete or non-functioning, but I knew that was a risk when I placed my bids and I still made a few quid selling as spares/repairs so I'm not too upset. Especially considering the ROI with everything else, which more than makes up for a couple of duds.

As far as criticisms go, I just wish there was an in-site vetting system for sellers. I think reviews would be the best system but, as is evidenced here, people give negative reviews over their own mistakes. It would really help consumers feel more comfortable with their choices though, in my opinion.

TLDR -- 10/10.

Defective, second hand items

Misleading Item description, ridiculous shipping costs were the least of the problems:
Parts missing, item not working AT ALL..
When I complained, they just said they were not responsible and referred to some clauses that were anywhere visible on the web..
Plus, they want to be paid using debit cards or bank transfer so you CANNOT GET ANY MONEY BACK

⚠️ SCAM ALERT

⚠️ SCAM ALERT – Brightwell Auctions Ltd (Company no. 16378734)
I almost lost £19,000 to this so-called auction company after bidding through the i-bidder.com platform. Here’s what happened:

- I won a car auction (Volvo XC90) listed by Brightwell Auctions Ltd via i-bidder.com
- I transferred £19,000 for the car and received an invoice marked “Paid”
- After 4 hours, they sent me a second invoice for over £10,000, claiming “Buyer's Premium”, extra VAT and storage fees
- I questioned the legitimacy of these fees — they began threatening with 6% daily penalties, and claimed I owed them more than £28,000
- They kept responding professionally and seemed legit at first — even had a bank account at Barclays — but all pressure was focused on forcing more payments
- Their Terms & Conditions are written in a predatory and abusive manner, making it nearly impossible for buyers to back out
- After reporting to my bank and providing all the evidence, they confirmed this was a well-executed scam and I received a full refund

I’ve reported them to:
- Action Fraud UK
- FCA (Financial Conduct Authority)
- Citizens Advice (Ref: CCA-1988607)
- Trading Standards
This company uses realistic documents, logos, VAT numbers, and even detailed invoices with Barclays Bank payment instructions — but it’s all a trap.

If you see Brightwell Auctions Ltd on any auction site, especially i-bidder, do not trust them and report immediately. I was lucky — many won’t be. All of it makes you feel it’s safe — but it’s a well-executed fraud.

Bank Fraud Reference: FRA64442
❌ i-bidder.com is also responsible:
• When I raised concerns about the seller, instead of helping, i-bidder suspended my account
• They claimed I was a “risk to future auctions” because Brightwell reported me
• This shows i-bidder protects scam sellers and punishes legitimate buyers who question suspicious activity
