Efficient house move

Martin’s team recently moved us in Plympton. They turned up on time, packed everything well and made two trips to our new property. Despite a delay getting our keys they remained cheerful and unloaded everything with speed and efficiency. A job very well done. Thank you.

They really took the stress out

From boxes and bubble wrap they were efficient. They arrived at our new destination, calling beforehand , unloaded, placing items appropriately. How they managed to get certain pieces in was a real skill. The chaps were friendly, cheerful, it was a good experience and we are going to use them again shortly.

House Removal June 2025

Great service by John and his team. Hobbs moved our 4 bed house to a 5 bed f3 storey house just round the corner. The whole process was professional and reassuring from the outset. I was really luck to find they had availability 3 weeks out from the big day. The initial house visit and survey helped provide me a lot of confidence as to the sort of outfit Hobbs were. The admin and booking process was superb and responsive and the agreed price was very competitive and there were no additional costs at all after my initial payment.

On the day, 4 men were initially deployed, 1 more than I had expected. They unloaded my house efficiently and with care and were very friendly throughout. I also included an optional add on for 2 beds to be dismantled and reassembled at my new house and this was achieved without any problems. We also had a big trampoline to move, and Hobbs agreed with my advice to move it by carrying it to my new property about 1/4 mile away to save on having to take it apart and put it back together again.

By the time the house was packed up there was a wait for the completion on my purchase to come through. Hobbs were very patient. When the time came to move our goods into the new house they had deployed 6 men on the job. The vehicles were unloaded quickly and with care. Where it wasn't clear, I was consistently asked which room I wanted each box/item in. There were no breakages, and no items were lost.

I could not recommend Hobbs highly enough.

This company moved me in September 2021…

This company moved me in September 2021 with the majority of my possessions having to be put into storage including very personal items left to me by people no longer with us.
In April 2024 I asked them to move me again and to collect all of my belongings from storage and deliver them to my new property.
I would say that 65% of the goods they stored for me have gone missing or probably stolen and they are denying that they had ever taken them into storage in the first place.
Some of the goods I did receive back were either smashed broken or both.
I have reported them to 3 Counties Radio, the police and trading standards all of whom are continuing with their investigations.
I can prove fraud which the police are looking into.
I would advise that NOBODY ever go near or use this company in any way shape or form.
Their after care was and still is nonexistent with a we couldn't care less attitude.

Avoid

Removals men were arguing amongst themselves, complaining about slightly difficult access route out of the house, scuffed newly painted ceilings whilst moving furniture in to new house and smashed a newly installed ceiling light.

Head office has said as valuation was not completed on the inventory form there is nothing they can do about the replacement of the ceiling light. But nothing on the form explains the insurance and claims aspect. Would not recommend.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! We have been completely ripped off by them. They have had our furniture in storage for the last 18 months and we have just received the majority of it back, wet, rotten, broken, ripped, scratched, and we are still missing various items, a large 16c dark pine coffer, a large dining table top and God knows what else, as although we asked for a full inventory of everything in each container when they collected the furniture this was not done. They had shown us the high quality Cadogan Tate storage facility in Hemel Hempstead where our furniture was going to be stored, and where they apparently had a business arrangement. We were reassured that the containers were going to be well looked after there. On our return to the U.K. we asked for the furniture to be delivered to our new address in Devon. John the owner quoted a ridiculous amount, so we arranged for a removal company from Devon to collect it from Cadogan Tate for half the amount. It was only then that John Hobbs informed us that our crates were no longer at the Cadogan Tate facility and hadn’t been there for over 8 months, and he wasn’t sure where our furniture was, so he’d get back to us. Over the next few days he consistently lied, evading our telephone calls, changing his story every time we managed to speak to him.

After many agonising days trying to get him to admit where our furniture was he then held our furniture to ransom asking for an extortionate amount of money to release it. We tried to negotiate the price to no avail, he threatened put his men on another job, so very very reluctantly we paid. Finally he suggested we meet in a lay-by on the London Road between Berkhamsted and Bourne End to swap our furniture from his old dirty decrepit vans (the vans on the website don’t seem to exist) into North Devon Removals clean 18 tonne lorry plus 16 tonne trailer, (these guys were shocked and horrified at the state of our furniture as it was unloaded). As soon as we started to noticed that things were missing as well as damaged, John Hobbs’ son Jonathon ran off! Leaving his two employees embarrassed and shocked, but they did apologise before driving off. This happened on 18th October 2023. We have tried calling John Hobbs numerous times, to discuss compensation for the damage and an insurance claim form and have had one message saying he’d found the table top, and that we needed photographic proof of our furniture when they collected it to prove it wasn’t damaged! Since most of the damage is due to wet/damp I think it’s highly unlikely it would have remained wet for 18 months! This can only be from where it has been stored with Hobbs.

We will be taking this company to court.

Good service

We used Hobbs for a removal that involved collection from two venues and delivery to a third. Everything went very well. The work included taking apart two beds and reassembling them at the new home, all achieved with no problems.

I'd use them again.

Excellent experience

Excellent experience. Choose Hobbs is my advice if they operate in your area. So many good things to share. Reliable, arrived on time, helpful and a joy to work with - I just needed one pair of hands as I was mucking in too. But it's the small details you want when moving house - John (MD) kindly and proactively, sent a colleague round drop off boxes/protective wrapping as he could tell I was struggling to get some. I didn't ask for this. We detoured to go pick up keys from house vendor. Lot's of little details like this that made it a great experience. Don't stress about your move. Good luck!
Ps - I did house removals for 3 years during summer holidays and later in life when in between jobs, so I know good from bad service. They are top draw.

Great team, reasonable rates

We were moving quite far and had to put our stuff into storage for a couple of months before moving into our new house. Hobbs removals were really good - they arranged the move each side and our storage for a reasonable price, both teams of removal men were great and there was no damage to our stuff, plus they did the move out and the move in in good time and taking care to put down blankets etc. Unfortunately a bag of spirits we were saving for our housewarming went missing, which we assume was taken when our stuff was stored in the warehouse (I think it’s shared storage space) - could have been far worse of course, just a bit disappointing! I would happily use Hobbs removals again though, especially for a same-day move

Poor after care service

I have to be as objective as possible here: the service wasn't all bad. They turned up on time, moved our stuff efficiently and, as their website suggests, they do provide storage at a very competitive rate.

However, it was after the move that the problems arose. We lost at least a box-full of stuff and also had furniture damaged, issues that not only do they seem resolutely determined not to solve but have also even tried to blame us for. Needless to say, they have stopped answering calls and emails.

I have come to the conclusion that life is too short and my time too precious to be chasing a rogue removal company for a few hundred quid. However, I can say that, if you are contemplating a move in the Home Counties, to give this lot the body swerve. From memory, Pickfords were miles better.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Our experience of Hobbs Removals is absolutely appalling. They are the worst company we have ever come across. Avoid at all costs, even if you are desperate for a removal company. Our complaint is still ongoing and there is a court case pending.

After contacting them they were quick to come out and do a quote and seemed competitive with their prices and service that they could provide. We decided to go ahead with them.

We were moving from one part of the country to the other and would be going into temporary rental accommodation, so needed to use their storage service for a period of 3 months, until our new house was ready and we could then have our items moved out of storage and delivered to us. The day came for them to collect our items. We had been advised that they would be with us by 8am. We did start to get a bit anxious when they didn’t appear, however after eventually being able to get them on a mobile we were advised that they were on their way. They arrived at 9:30am. The team were organised and removed and loaded the vehicles in good time and there was no damage to our house in doing this, so we were pleased. We had already paid, some two days prior, for them to remove and take our items to their storage facility.

During the 3 month period of storage, we received invoices for the cost of four storage containers. We paid accordingly.

We eventually completed on our new house and contacted Hobbs removals to arrange a date for them to remove our items from
their storage facility and deliver them to our new address. A date was agreed verbally and via email for this to take place. A few days later we received a message from Hobbs to say that they could not do this agreed date. We were very disappointed, as by then we had given notice to our rental property and it was difficult to then have to go back and extend our rental agreement. Hobbs removals did not have any empathy and said that the new date was the earliest date they could offer.

The new date of 3 September was agreed, so two days prior we paid in full the amount to Hobbs for removing our items from storage and delivering to us.

The removal lorry arrived at 9:30am at our new address and again the removal team were efficient at putting our furniture into the designated rooms within our new house. There was no evident damage to any items or to our property, obviously a lot of the items were in storage boxes. The removal team advised that as they were only able to fit three containers within their vehicle a further vehicle, containing the fourth container, together with our outside plants would be with us later on the 3 September. They explained that the vehicle containing our fourth container was also doing a delivery to somewhere further north and so would deliver our items on its way back south again. This all seemed feasible. Time elapsed and nothing turned up.

We contacted Hobbs later in the day chasing our outstanding items and after a lot of deliberation they advised that the fourth container was still at their storage facility. We became very suspicious. Within a very short time Hobbs we’re denying all knowledge of our outstanding items.

We continued to try to contact Hobbs, via phone, email and text and were never able to speak directly to them. They appeared to be avoiding us at all costs. We then contacted Trading Standards and now have a court case pending.

Hobbs Removals and Storage is the worst

Hobbs Removals and Storage is the worst possible company that you could choose to help you move. We had no choice but to use this company because we needed to move urgently, and they seemed to be adaptable, flexible, and willing to take us on short notice. After the experience we have had with them, however, we will never use them again. Originally, they appeared very efficient as they instantly sent a member of staff over to complete a quote and then they followed up promptly with their quote of £2460, including disassembly and reassembly of several items of furniture. As we were in a fairly large house with a lot of items this was a reasonable quote, and they were amenable to our tight schedule. We expected stellar service after the interactions we had already had with the company, however that was categorically not the case.
This plays nothing but a blame game and take absolutely NO responsibility for the damage they caused to several of our items. They are very unprofessional and messed us around when it came to setting a date to move our belongings, despite assurances at the start that they were able to make the date. Subsequently we were forced to sleep on hastily purchased airbeds for two nights with only a couple of suitcases of belongings.
When the time came for the company to actually transport our belongings, it became very apparent that they lack any care or consideration, mishandling and mistreating our belongings as if they were merely boxes of rubbish to be taken to the tip. We paid the additional £450 for the company to dismantle and then reassemble three beds, two desks, and a wardrobe, and this was all documented when the initial survey was conducted. On the day, the team the ignored these instructions and only took apart the beds as there was no other way to remove them from our old property, and then placed them in the wrong rooms (ignoring our instructions). When it was mentioned, they would not rectify their mistake because the guys with the tools had already left, and they might be able to come back in a few days to switch them, so we had to do it ourselves. The removed the doors to the wardrobe but did not bother disassembling the rest of it until they reached the new property and realised, they had not fit it through the doors. They then proceeded to drag the disassembled wardrobe across the drive of our new property, resulting in ugly scuff marks on the face of what was a lovely wardrobe. The two doors they had removed earlier were put on upside down when the wardrobe was reassembled as well.
In addition to the wardrobe, the company broke a vase with sentimental value, and explained they had not brought the second desk over as it began to split when they moved it. The first desk arrived unscathed (though the company did not bother disassembling this one like they were paid to) thankfully. When we returned to the old property the following day, we discovered not only was there a vast amount of our items strewn across the place, having perhaps fallen out of boxes and just been left, but the desk that they claimed was ‘splitting’ slightly was in two separate pieces. Somehow this sturdy desk had been ripped in half, presumably as one person tried to carry it downstairs alone rather than ask for help or disassemble it (as they were paid to do!). Needless to say, they took absolutely no responsibility for the broken desk stating that WE should have disassembled it for them before they arrived!

The property we moved from was left in a right state. One full box, that I admit if forgot to tape, somehow made it over to the new property half full. The other half of the contents was sprawled across the floor at the old house. They left a large amount of our belongings in the house to the point where we had to hire a man and van to help us pick up the rest. When confronted, all Hobbs had to say was this it was our fault because we left loads of things unpacked. Items they left included things like hoovers, steam mops, 6ft cat scratchers, fans, and items that were too big to be boxed.
Needless to say, we are extremely disappointed in the service we got from this company and would highly discourage anyone from using them. We will be posting this review on as many sites as possible to spread the word because we feel people need to be aware of these uncaring, unreliable, and rude removal company.
Total cost of their service: £2,460.
