I interviewed for Hirevue as a renewal…

I interviewed for Hirevue as a renewal specialist, and they used their own product "On Demand Video" interview. The "bot" interview started with asking me to introduce myself, which could be re-recorded. The second step were two games: finding and comparing the patterns on the cubes. The second game's object was to input number and / or letters on the screen as they are presented. My question is why are games used to assess a candidate's ability, background and skill? I have had great success in my career and I hoped that they would have cared about my expertise. After I completed the games, I told myself Hirevue is not a company I want to work for because I do not like their product. I decided not to complete the video. It was too impersonal and gamified for my liking.

“I found the HireVue digital interview…

“I found the HireVue digital interview platform challenging. The system can feel impersonal, and technical issues like video or audio glitches sometimes affected the experience. Additionally, answering pre-recorded questions without real-time interaction made it harder to express myself naturally. While I understand it helps streamline recruitment, I believe some candidates may perform better in a live or in-person interview setting.”

Exploitative Intellectual Property Rights Agreement

HireVue imposes on candidates an unreasonable mandatory user agreement (see below the quoted language), which transfers the ownership of the intellectual property and any other content a candidate might share during interview to HireVue. That means, if you interview with HireVue, you won't even own your likeness anymore, let alone any original ideas or fresh perspectives. Not only they can use them without permission from you, but also they can go after you with their lawyers if anything like a patent application or business competition comes up in the future.

In other words, this is exploitative and sinister, and everyone who is pushed to interview through this horrible company should just say no.

The relevant part of the user agreement is provided below.

Submitted Content

Generally. Certain features of the Service may permit you to submit, or for HireVue to capture on behalf of Company, certain content, including documents, interactions (including audio and audiovisual recordings of interviews or coaching sessions, question responses, challenges, tests, assessments, trainings) messages, data, code, text, and other types of works, including your name, voice, persona, and likeness that may be embodied therein (collectively, “Submitted Content”) and to transmit Submitted Content to Company through the Service.

Ownership and Permitted Use of Submitted Content. By providing or making available the Submitted Content, you agree that Company owns all right, title and interest in and to the Submitted Content and Company may use the Submitted Content at their sole discretion for the purpose of the Digital Interaction and all related activities. In connection with HireVue’s agreement with Company, Company has granted HireVue (and, if applicable, HireVue subcontractors) a license in connection with HireVue’s provision of the Service to Company to do some or all of the following: host, store, transfer, display, perform, reproduce, index and analyze Submitted Content. By agreeing to these Terms, you expressly authorize HireVue to use the Submitted Content in connection with its operation of the Service to Company. HireVue may derive and use anonymous analytical information derived from your Submitted Content in order to improve and provide services to our customers. Please note HireVue will not ever publish your Submitted Content without your express consent or direction to do so.

Please note, if you provide us any ideas, proposals or suggestions (“Feedback”), whether related to the Service or otherwise, such Feedback will be owned by HireVue. Any use of such Feedback by HireVue is without any compensation paid to you.

Great for companies treating humans like a resource

Some companies started using HireVue "On Demand Interview" which allows them to let candidates do all the work without making any effort themselves.

If you're not desperate, boycott companies using this system, they are trying to remove the "human" in human resources.

Poor Client Experience

Whilst the product is excellent and for the most part user friendly, it is a shame I cannot say my experience of their customer service team was the same.

Having entered a new agreement with HireVue just prior to the pandemic closing our business down for a year, I was surprised to be issued a new invoice in 2021 for another years subscription. Unknowingly we were on a rolling contract and upon requesting to cancel the subscription on the day the invoice was issued, I was advised we needed 60 days notice to cancel. 2 months of discussions and they have not moved from their corporate response of 'clause 7.3 of your contract states'. Deplorable behaviour! We are now forced to pay 2 full years of invoices for a product we did not use at all.
