Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 137 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people found the customer service to be exceptionally poor, with representatives often unhelpful, uninformed, and difficult to reach, leading to long resolution times for issues. Customers also reported significant problems with the website and user experience, particularly concerning login difficulties, passkey issues, and general inaccessibility. The payment process was frequently criticized, with users experiencing declined cards despite sufficient balances, fraudulent charge issues, and delays in fund transfers or reimbursements. Reviewers also noted that the service became problematic after a merger with another provider, leading to a decline in quality and increased frustration. Additionally, some customers expressed concerns about the company's practices regarding fund transfers and account closures, noting that these processes were difficult. However, a few other people also felt that some issues stemmed from users not fully understanding how their accounts worked or waiting too long to address problems.

I'm a bank CEO and am horrified Health Equity acquired the firm we previously used to administer our HSA accounts for employees. Customer service is non-existent with hold times designed to make you hang-up. Website passkeys are unworkable and setting up direct deposits require you to disclose online banking passwords to a third party. Stay away !!!

Terrible, just terrible.

Website is designed to make it as difficult as possible to get reimbursement from FSA. Click "Reimburse Me" and you get a popup basically saying 'this is not going to give you a reimbursement', you're going to have to figure out on your own that you need to click a teeny little icon that will then enable you to click a whole lot more and burrow through a labyrinth of screens until you get to a page where you click, SURPRISE, 'Reimburse Me' AGAIN.
And now they've made it even MORE complicated by adding a passkey (instead of the simpler password they've had for years.) One of the worst websites I've ever encountered.
But we users have no choice, because this organization is selected by our employers (or their insurance company); there's no option, so we're stuck, and Health Equity knows that.

A Pain to Deal With & A Little Shady

They will lose all record of the receipts you submit, so you have to keep the receipts available to re-upload on a regular basis. They will also accidentally add extra money to your account and then demand you pay them back or your card will be cut off.

HealthEquity switched from passwords to…

HealthEquity switched from passwords to passkeys in Jan 2026, and I can no longer longer access my account. I called their customer service, but I was never able to reach a human representative; I was put on hold for over an hour. I filed a complaint via the BBB. A representative from HealthEquity called and left a message. She also left an email, which is more convenient for me. After corresponding via email, here's HealthEquity's policy:

If you have an Android, it must be version 10 or higher. I have version 9, so I cannot use the mobile app.

For the desktop, it must run Windows. I run linux, so I cannot use the desktop.

They have a zero tolerance policy. In other words, you either switch to passkeys, or you are locked out of your account. Since I cannot get a passkey via my smart phone or my desktop, I am locked out of my account.

Their customer service/support HORRIBLE !!!

Their customer service/support is pathetic. I called four times this morning, trying to get a simple issue fixed. All four agents I spoke with gave me a (VERY) different answer, and none were able to help me. I would like to know who to speak to so that I can get back the hour and 11 minutes I wasted trying to get help from these morons !!!

Read the instructions!!

I read reviews about healthequity and understand alot of the frustration on passkey and account access. The other complaints are just stupid. More than half the time it's because the member doesn't understand how the accounts work. They think healthequity intentionally keeps their money but don't realize healthequity don't do that at all. Outside of fees all the money that YOU lose goes back to your EMPLOYER! And if they say different that's a lie. All it is, is numbers that show up but healthequity don't physically hold your money. Half the time they go off of rules that your employer put in place or IRS guidelines. FSA is front loaded so no its not YOUR money it's your employers money it's not actually yours till the end of the year. You get asked for receipts because people ruined it I'm sure at some point by buying shit your not supposed to. It's to be sure we are paying for bills in our coverage period and on an eligible dependent. The card can't tell that so yes we have to submit receipts and if you actually understood what you signed up for you wouldn't be complaining it tells you receipts are required and on the receipt it has to have information on it to prove that when you ran the card it was used in your coverage period. READ your eligible expense list before you make purchases, vitamins are not eligible because the IRS says they are not medically necessary. So be an adult and understand the rules that your employer put in placed based off the IRS, so no healthequity doesn't keep our money anything lost goes to your employer!!! The website and app I couldn't agree more on the issues. And most of all don't wait till the last minute to check on your account especially when it's on a timeline. Every company takes time to process stuff it can't happen the instant you remembered you have an account. It's your responsibility to ensure your stuff is up to date. Sending stuff through the mail takes time. And your a liar if you were never told any of this cause it's all right there when you sign up and if it's not that's on your employer and you for not finding out what it is you signed up for. Ask questions and google shit you don't know. If you don't feel your getting help ask to speak to another person in customer service. I just don't understand how people sign up and put money into an account you don't understand.

Worst HSA management imaginable.

I have been trying to shut down my HSA and transfer the funds to a different service based on brutally bad service for over six months. I'm still unsuccessful and the service continues to charge fees. Worst HSA management imaginable.

They don't pay your claims on time

I submitted a dependent care claim for $4,999.92 on January 4, 2026 for the 2025 DCRA period. As of January 22, 2026 it still hasn't been paid.

They hold your money all year, then gatekeep it when you ask for a legitimate disbursement.

I unfortunately have an FSA with this company through my job. Avoid at all costs if you can. This company tries to scam you out of your money. There is always a reason to deny claims. I just sent an itemized bill with names and dates for chiropractic care. I also have a letter of necessity from my PCP. Let's see if they deny it...

Also, when I call customer service they are so unhelpful. They can't help me login, they can't stop transactions that I just accidentally put through, they can't help me get anything approved. What a joke!!

Bad customer service--really bad-- like they told me they would not reimburse me for certain medical expenses because they happened before they took over the account (even tho I have the receipts!) high fees, and when I wanted to move my account to another custodian, they made me sell all my investments in order to transfer my money!

WageWorks frustrating but can't even log into HealthEquity

Have been using WageWorks for FSA for years, which was bad enough. But now transferred to / renamed to HealthEquity and I can no longer even sign in, the site can't verify me to find my password, username, etc., doesn't let me register a new account because it can't find me, and then when I try to contact their "365/24/7" service line, I'm told that they are off business hours.* Meanwhile the clock is ticking on getting reimbursed for the year. Are they scam artists or just incompetent?

*And no it isn't 2/29 in a leap year.

In 2025 I received a mailing packet to submit documentation for reimbursement of expenses. When I didn’t hear from them I called. They say I’m not in their system but somehow they can mail me the forms. They opened a case number but never provide an update and now I learned it’s been closed. I have been submitting claims for nine years with Further without any issues. This company is awful.

Denied claims

Denied claims after being sent the documents they specifically asked for. Representative was rude. I wish the state would find someone else for our fsa. This is the 3rd time for me. From my doctor's office. What do they think the purchase was???

I wish I could give this company 0 stars. Please stay away from this company!! I have been trying to close my account for over a month but it has been impossible!! I call every week to get an update and they give me different information. I was offered a passkey which I never received, then linked my account to my bank and now it’s a totally different story . They are still charging me the maintenance fee. I have involved the BBB and following their steps for a resolution but this company is a SCAM. Horrible experience!!! Stay away from this company and do your research if offered by your employer.

Health Equity is the worst

Health Equity is the worst. I needed to sign on to my account tonight. Spent the last hour trying to set a passkey due to some new security requirement. I still can't log in to my account. What's wrong with logging in from my home computer with a secured computer and a secured internet connection? I will expire this account as soon as possible.

Horrible experience

We received a request about providing receipts related to our FSA account.
We uploaded everything, but keep receiving requests for more paperwork.
We had similar FSA accounts practically throughout our whole working part of life.
Never anything like that with other providers.
Their app stops working at some point, when try to upload paperwork.
Secure email sends an automated replay about privacy and all kind of rules unrelated to the matter.
Representatives have no idea what they are talking about most of the time.
Fax which was sent by doctors office and confirmed was lost and we had to ask the again to resend it.
Absolutely horrible experience and lots of precious time wasted ( in our 70 s and still working !)
Warning to everyone:
do not do business with this company, if possible for you.

Consistently difficult to access…

Consistently difficult to access account which you have to do often because you are constantly getting notified that a legit charged needs verified. Often the same charge several times. It is a tactic to discourage usage. I am not a user, but my wife is through a retirement benefit from my previous employer. Not really much of a benefit if you can't use it.
