Giverrang makes Community Gift Cards for communities across the U.S. Our cards are Mastercard prepaid cards and we have developed a special technology that allows us to lock each card so that it can only be spent at a curated set of merchants in an area (e.g. chamber of commerce) or geo-lock it to work at all businesses in a specific town or county. Our tech allows us to launch tailor made card programs for economic developers or self-launch programs at scale.

UPDATED: local gift card issues

Recent Update: I received a new card to resolve the previous issue. Was contacted and am changing my review to reflect the outreach. Appreciated the company reviewing and correcting this. Thank you. --------Earlier review: I received a $100 local gift card from Giverrang (mylocalgiftcard.com) as a birthday gift. There was already a delay in receiving the card, but since the expiration date listed was 8/2028, I assumed there was plenty of time to use it.

When I recently checked the balance, I discovered it had been drained to $0 because the company had been deducting a $5 monthly inactivity fee—even though the card had never been used. The entire $100 gift was quietly wiped out by these charges.

What makes this especially concerning is that the inactivity fee was neither clearly disclosed on the paperwork that came with the card nor prominently listed on the website when the card was purchased. Most people buying gift cards as presents assume the value will still be there when the recipient eventually uses it, especially when the expiration date is years away.

Under the Credit CARD Act of 2009, federal law requires that gift card fees, such as inactivity charges, be clearly and conspicuously disclosed, and they cannot begin unless the card has been inactive for at least 12 months. If those requirements aren’t met, the fees may violate federal consumer protection law.

In my case, my sister-in-law spent $100 on a gift that was effectively charged off due to inactivity before it was ever used. A gift card that silently drains its balance defeats the entire purpose of giving a gift.

People should think very carefully before purchasing these cards. What looks like a $100 gift can end up being worth $0 if the recipient doesn’t use it quickly.

Very disappointing and potentially misleading experience.

Since December 2024 our cards no longer have inactivity fees or other fees of any kind, so the full balance of the gift remains available to be spent by the recipient indefinitely.

Prior to December 2024 some of our cards did have fees, which were explained prior to purchase and printed on physical cards in full compliance with the CARD act and other laws.

We contacted this customer directly and they have accepted our offer to resolve their issue.

Excellent gift option!

My husband is taking a vacation to Bentonville for bike fest in a few months, and I wanted to get him a gift certificate to a local restaurant, but I really don’t know much about the area. This is a perfect gift for him! Also, there was an issue with my local mail and my physical card didn’t get to me on time, so the company made it so easy for me to cancel that one and get a digital one. Would definitely recommend this service!

Issue resolved

UPDATE: Below is my original review and frustration with this company. I had emailed earlier in the day before writing this. The following day I was replied to with a thorough explanation of the situation and the process and an offer to remedy the situation. While I am still not a fan of the original practice, I was pleased to find out that this inactivity charge will no longer exist for any new cards moving forward as the company recognizes the negative customer experience and has been able to get a solid enough footing to remove these charges. I appreciate the relatively quick reply and action as well as the respectful email dialogue about the situation. Not all companies would be willing to acknowledge and remedy a situation like this and good customer service goes a long way in my book. Thank you for addressing my concerns Giverrang.
Original review below for context.

Realizing this feels like a total scam. As long as you use your card immediately, you may be safe. We bought these for folks who helped us as a thank you. We ended up with an extra. If you’re like us, many gift cards end up sitting for a while before we use them. This was a $50 card we purchased about a year and a half ago. I remembered we had it and was excited to use it. The card says right on it that it expires in 2029. I tried to figure out how to use it and pulled up the not and was surprised and bewildered to see a balance of $30 on the card. I then saw it says it expires in 2028, right above that I do an image that says 29 on the card. I clicked on transactions and see that they are deducting an inactivity fee every month. At the current rate, I will have zero dollars left on the card in January of 2026, 2-3 years before either expiration date. Makes me wonder how many people don’t use theirs right away, thus the company is selling cards, and then slowly taking the money back. Extremely disappointed to be swindled out of $20 at this point and wonder about the friends we gifted these to if they will expect to be able to use them and then not have the money there. There are much better ways to support local businesses.

They fixed my address errors!

I ordered a gift card for someone who lives across the country from me. Somehow, I made mistakes on the address and was very worried about how this would play out. I replied to the help button in the confirmation email and it created a response email. I had doubts that I would hear back from anyone. But, the next morning, there was a response from someone telling me that they were able to correct the address information before shipping it out. I was so happy that they fixed the problem for me and communicate so quickly about it. Thank you so much to the company and its great response from the people who work there. Well done!!

GREAT Customer Support

I purchased a few gift cards for Marathon, Florida. I went down with my family and unfortunately, no one was familiar with these gift cards so we weren't able to redeem them anywhere. I contacted the company to let them know what happened, and even though it was past the return policy, they made an exception and issued a full refund. They're customer support is great, and they're very responsive. I love their mission and will definitely purchase some for another location. Hopefully, over time, Marathon Key will be more aware of this program.
Thank you!

Amazing customer service!

I purchased multiple gift cards and was invoiced and had cards sent to me in less than 24 hours. The support specialist assigned to my purchase, Mark Walerysiak Jr., took the time to write a thoughtful note thanking me for my purchase. Really nice touch.

Great Customer Support

When we thought our ordered plastic gift card was late arriving, I emailed Customer Support. Mark Walerysiak Jr. got back to me in hours and we found that the card had been shipped and had already arrived in a plain white envelope. We thought it was a scam plastic card, but Mark helped us understand our error.

selling gift cards without my permission

Giverrang listed my business as one that customers may purchase a gift card to use for my services. They never contacted me to ask if they could do this. I am modifying my earlier review from 1-3 stars since they removed my site from theirs after I contacted them.

Giverrang's product is a gift card that can be spent at any local independent business in a community. We list local businesses to suggest some places the cards can be spent, but if a business prefers not to be listed we are happy to remove them.

Great customer service

Great customer service. I accidentally forgot a crucial part of the recipient’s address and the gift card got returned. They contacted me for correction and resent the gift card. So not only do they offer a great product the service is above and beyond!
