Social Studies Done Right

Gibbs Smith has created a curriculum that every teacher who has ever panicked and Googled a lesson at 9 p.m. on Sunday night can appreciate! What stood out to me right away was the emphasis on literacy. Reading, writing, discussion, and critical thinking aren't treated as separate skills or something teachers have to squeeze in on top of social studies. They're built right into the lessons through primary sources, inquiry, close reading, writing tasks, and classroom discussion. Students are learning the content while also developing the literacy skills they need. I also really appreciate the support for teachers. The lessons are super well organized. The resources are very easy to use. There are plenty of materials available to help with planning and instruction. They have quite literally written out where each state standard is hit in the book. You can tell this curriculum was created by people who understand what teachers actually need. It feels thoughtful and intentional from start to finish. It also aligns naturally with the reading, writing, analysis, and reasoning skills students need to be successful on the CMAS. Our Colorado gal was a very valuable resource throughout the process. You can certainly tell her background is in education as it is evident in every conversation. She understands the realities teachers face and consistently provided practical guidance, clear communication, and excellent customer service. From initial conversations through quoting and implementation planning, Kenzie was professional, approachable, and incredibly helpful. You can tell she really enjoys her job. Overall, this company gets an A+ from me. They offer high quality social studies content, strong literacy integration, and meaningful support for teachers. I would confidently recommend it to schools looking for a curriculum that works for both students and educators.
