I purchased Genki insurance for my…

I purchased Genki insurance for my entire family — 3 people in total.

Spoiler: if you are looking for an insurance solution that actually helps limit your medical expenses and gives you peace of mind, this product is probably not for you.

During my experience with Genki, I encountered the following issues:

1. A mismatch between what is advertised on the website and what the company later states when it’s time to process claims. Responsibility is constantly shifted to the underlying insurance provider and the contract terms, despite the promises made during the sales process.

2. The reimbursement process regularly becomes more complicated over time. Instead of simplifying support for customers, the process feels increasingly difficult and bureaucratic.

3. Representatives who seem more focused on minimizing costs than patient well-being. In my case, there were attempts to push for discharge from hospital observation as quickly as possible, regardless of the actual medical condition.

4. The price of the product was doubled during our cooperation, which felt unreasonable given the quality of service received.

5. The most frustrating part is the repeated unjustified claim denials. In several cases, reimbursements were only approved after 2–3 rounds of disputes and appeals. Yes, it is possible to challenge these decisions, but it is extremely unpleasant when the insurance company appears to invent questionable reasons to avoid covering legitimate medical expenses.

Overall, my experience with Genki has been disappointing. The idea and marketing look attractive, but the actual claims experience feels very different once you truly need support.

Hi Vladyslav,

Thank you for the detailed feedback. A note for context: our records show one Genki Explorer contract on your side, covering you individually, not three family members.

A clarification on the first point: the parties involved in your coverage, the insurer, the claims handler, and the emergency assistance service, are disclosed in the contract documents shared at sign-up and available throughout the membership. Each party's role is set out there. We understand contract documents aren't the most exciting reads, but the information wasn't hidden.

On the points about denied claims and decisions perceived as cost-driven: every insurance contract has exclusions and restrictions, and claims are assessed against those conditions based on the information provided by the treating physician and the member. It's not an arbitrary process, and it shouldn't be one taken without due diligence. A rejected or contested claim doesn't mean the request was dismissed; it means the assessment found it falls outside the contract's scope. Disputes and appeals exist precisely so members can challenge an assessment with additional information, which sometimes changes the outcome, as it did in your case.

Since your time with us, we have launched Genki Traveler, our current travel health insurance, insured by Squarelife. Squarelife manages claims directly with faster turnaround and clearer communication with members, and inpatient cases run through a different emergency assistance service. Member feedback on this setup has been notably different from what you describe.

For reference, Genki Traveler today would cost you €52.50 per month for a plan with a €50 deductible, based on your age bracket.

On pricing more generally: premium adjustments reflect medical cost inflation imposed by healthcare providers, particularly in popular travel destinations where treatment costs have risen sharply. Keeping premiums in line with these increases is what allows us to maintain the level of benefits our members rely on. Holding prices artificially low would mean cutting coverage, which isn't a trade-off we're willing to make in the interest of the security of our members.

If there's anything still open from your time with us, write to us at help@genki.world and we'll take a look.

Clear and simple policy, fast reimbursement

Clear and simple policy. It’s designed for customers to understand, not to trick the customers. With all documents, my claim was approved and in my account within a day. I’ve never had such smooth claims with any insurance company.

Everything looks simple at first

Everything looks simple at first. Then they get you to pay upfront, and when you ask for reimbursement, they demand impossible documents just to avoid paying you.

Hi Stefano,

Thanks for the feedback, but "impossible documents" doesn't match what's actually requested.

With Genki Traveler, inpatient treatment is direct-billed with the hospital. Outpatient treatment is reimbursed after you pay the provider, and Squarelife (Genki Traveler's insurer) may request a medical report to assess the claim. That report isn't a full medical history, it's documentation from the treating doctor covering when symptoms started, the diagnosis, and the treatment given. Any physician can provide this as part of a normal consultation, and it's standard across health insurers. Without it, no insurer can assess a claim.

We've also asked Squarelife to specify exactly what each document should contain, so expectations are clearer upfront.

If you have questions about any process please contact our support at help@genki.world.

I highly recommend Genki for anyone looking for hassle-free travel insurance. My experience with their claim process has been incredibly straightforward and fast, with approvals typically coming through within 24 hours. I have submitted several claims ranging from €20 to €500, and every single one was handled with the same level of efficiency. It is rare to find a provider this reliable and quick, and I cannot recommend them enough.

Cancer as a digital nomad? I am back on the road, thanks to Genki

I've been a digital nomad for many years and one of Genki's earliest customers. I signed up back in 2021, the same year I joined the team (fun fact: Genki's founder and I first met at my coworking space in Hoi An in 2019).

Like many nomads, I started with travel health insurance. But at some point, I switched to international health insurance, which was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I was always healthy. No major illnesses. And then, in my late 30s, I was suddenly diagnosed with cancer.

I chose to stay in my partner's country and went through the full treatment there: surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and psychological support. The total cost was enormous. Genki covered everything.

Without having international health insurance before my diagnosis, cancer would now be a pre-existing condition and likely not covered at all. My international life would have been over.

Today, I'm cancer-free and back to my nomadic life.

If you are a nomad or expat reading this, please think about this:

- Where do you go if you get sick?
- Who is your social support system?
- What insurance do you have, and what is covered?

*Genki team members do not get special treatment or discounts. This is my review as a Genki customer.

Terrible. Avoid.

Genki have lowered their coverage and increased the prices. I don't understand.
Terrible service.
They refuse your claim based on conjecture and not fact provided.

Hi T J,

Thank you for your feedback.

All claim decisions for Genki Traveler are made by Squarelife, the insurer and claims manager, whose team includes medical professionals. These decisions are based on the medical documentation provided by the treating physician and the customer, not on conjecture.

Regarding pricing and coverage, our products are regularly reviewed to remain sustainable and competitive. Premiums for international health insurance are directly tied to the costs set by healthcare providers worldwide. In recent years, many providers in popular travel destinations, particularly in Asia, have significantly increased their prices, and these shifts are naturally reflected in plan pricing.

Having said that, some age groups also saw a price drop to maintain a fair and stable offer for all members.

In terms of benefits, Genki Traveler continues to offer worlwide coverage for any acute condition starting after the insurance start date.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us.

I got injured in the last week of my insurance. I pay for everything, provided the information and they pay me back very quickly like in a couple of days.
But what it was very helpful, i had some issues with my bank to receive the money back from Genki, and they did everything possible to help me.
