I wrote an upsetting review on Europcar of Rennes, France because they charged me more money for fuel after I had filled the car.

Extremely disappointing experience at Toulouse Airport
UPDATE (05 Aug 26). Whilst Europcar France is worthy of nothing more than a 1* review (as per the majority of reviews); Europcar UK have now been able to facilitate my understandable and well-justified refund. Credit where it’s due: Europcar UK – 5 stars. Europcar France – do better.
UPDATE (31 Jul 26). I contacted Europcar by both telephone and email on 9 July 26. Following a further email sent on Wed 22 Jul, I sent a follow-up on Thu 30 Jul requesting an update. At the time of writing, I have yet to receive a response.
Extremely disappointing experience at Toulouse Airport – I prepaid a Europcar rental in May for collection at Toulouse Airport, France, using my debit card. Before the rental date, the card naturally expired and was replaced by my bank with a new card in the same name, linked to the same account and sort code as the card used for the original booking.
When I arrived at the Europcar desk, I explained the situation and provided the replacement card, my identification and the full booking confirmation. I also showed the staff the bank transaction confirming that the original rental fees had already been taken from my account, along with all the booking details.
Despite this, Europcar refused to accept the replacement card and would not allow me to collect the vehicle I had already paid for. As a result, I was forced to arrange another vehicle and pay approximately £850 on top of the amount I had already paid to Europcar, simply because my bank had routinely replaced an expired debit card.
I appreciate that Europcar needs payment and security procedures, but this was a standard card renewal that was completely outside of my control. I had provided extensive evidence that the original payment had been made, that I was the same customer, and that the replacement card was linked to the same bank account and sort code. What I found particularly disappointing was the lack of flexibility or any meaningful solution offered at the desk. The result was significant additional expense, inconvenience and disruption to our plans.
I am currently seeking a refund from Europcar, but based on this experience, I would be very reluctant to use the company again.

I strongly recommend avoiding the…
I strongly recommend avoiding the Europcar office at Marseille Provence Airport.
First, the vehicle I had booked was supposedly unavailable, and I was encouraged to accept an “upgrade.” It was presented as only a small additional cost, but the final price turned out to be much higher than expected. I felt pressured into paying significantly more for a car I never intended to rent.
Second, be extremely careful when collecting your vehicle. In my experience, there were tiny scuffs that were almost impossible to notice during the inspection. When I returned the car, I was told that one of these marks was not listed in the contract and it was recorded as new damage. This left me with the impression that the inspection process is heavily weighted against the customer.
If you decide to rent here, take detailed photos and videos of every centimeter of the car before leaving the parking lot. It may save you a lot of money and stress later.
This was one of the worst rental experiences I have ever had. I will never use Europcar again, and I cannot recommend the Marseille Airport location to anyone.

TERRIBLE
The car we were given is broken and will not change gear (its automatic) and keeps misfiring. The spanner warning on the dash comes and goes, we drove over an hour to return the car to be told they would not replace it as the light was not currently showing. We are now left with a car that is broken for the next 3 weeks in France. This is not only bad service but extremely unsafe to provide no alternative option. I will be looking into this and reporting to DGCCRF

Request for Immediate Refund of Unauthorized Insurance Charge
Dear Europcar Customer Service,
I am writing regarding my recent rental under contract number 2105885774.
When I made the reservation, no additional insurance charge was selected or accepted by me. However, I discovered that an extra insurance amount was deducted from my deposit after the rental.
I would like to make it absolutely clear that I did not agree to purchase this insurance, and I was not informed or clearly advised about any additional insurance being added to my rental agreement. If I had wanted extra insurance coverage, I would have purchased it during the booking process myself.
Therefore, I formally request the immediate refund of the additional insurance charge that was added to my rental without my knowledge or consent.
I am extremely dissatisfied with this experience. A charge made without proper authorization or transparent information is completely unacceptable. If this matter is not resolved promptly, I will submit complaints to all relevant consumer protection authorities and publicly report this experience.
I would also like to state that this has been a completely unsatisfactory customer experience, and I will not recommend Europcar to anyone.
I expect your urgent response and confirmation that the unauthorized insurance amount will be refunded immediately.
Sincerely,
Yusuf Emre Dursun Reservation No: 1205101025 Rental Contract No: 2105885774

Bad people
Kept us waiting 2 hours at Toulouse airport, only to say we couldn’t hire the car as there was a crack in my driving licence. The bloke was extremely smug as well, definitely something not right with him.

Extra costs without warning!
I accidently returned my own car key instead of the key of the rental car in Marseille Airport (The office was closed). Of course I sent the key of the car with DHL Express immediately and they had it within a day. They charged me 2 extra days, they told me they had no spare key of the car (no chance!!). I booked through a broker and they sent me the amount of what the broker promised but…tax (TVA) not included. This was a costly rental of 4 days… would not recommend!

When I arrived I had a Mercedes or similar booked! The person at the desk started very pleasantly & then proceeded to let me know that the car would be too big for me to drive, maybe this is a French male thing!
I said no not all I have a big 4x4 at home, trying to justify my reason for booking the car. He asked where I was going & also advised roads would not be good for me to drive on, again we visit this region frequently! Eventually I got a car, very complicated process. He then tried to sell me excess insurance, which I already have as I drive abroad a lot!!! His manner changed & he told me I’d be charged €50,000 euros if I damaged the car, ironically the car was scratched & damaged. So thanks Martin, you’ll be lucky!!!
The lady that did the check back in was excellent and polite and said car was perfect. Well not so perfect as it went out with dents & scratches etc
It’s never a pleasant experience to get a hire car when the staff are clearly on a commission for excess insurance selling.

Europcar were awful - avoid them
We had an awful experience with Europcar, and will book with Avis or Enterprise next time. We had to wait more than an hour at the airport (CDG, Paris) for the car, despite having booked in advance. The agents there are rude and aggressively try to sell you extra add ons which you don't need. The car they gave us was smaller than what we'd paid for, and the most basic model going. It was also dusty and covered in marks. They provided no drop-off instructions despite it being in a busy city-centre car park (Gard Du Nord), which made returning the car a really stressful and confusing experience. Finally, they charged us £80 for a tiny 2cm mark on the car, which was already there when we collected it. I will never use Europcar again - my experiences with other rental companies have been far better.

Unacceptable Downgrade & Mandatory Surcharge Trap (Contract: 56814546)
I booked a Compact SUV (Jeep Renegade / CGAR) with Europcar Beauvais for a 2,400 km family trip with 5 people.
Instead, they forced us into a subcompact Toyota Yaris Cross (urban B-segment, physically unfit for 5 passengers + luggage). When we refused, staff demanded an extra €250 surcharge just to give us the space we originally paid for.
Our written request during the trip to exchange the car was completely ignored. To top it off, Yaris Cross is not even listed in Europcar’s official T&Cs under the Compact/CGAR category.
Selling one category and delivering a smaller car while demanding more money is a misleading commercial practice.
Fix Case 26823756 before this is escalated further via CEC/ECC-Net and ECRCS.

Very bad experience with Europcar…
Very bad experience with Europcar France.
I made an online booking for a car rental from Marseille Airport to Nice Airport, from 25/06/2026 to 29/06/2026, for a prepaid total amount of €500.68.
When I arrived at the Marseille Airport desk around midnight to pick up the car, the Europcar agent refused to accept the original booking/payment because it had been made online via Debit Card, even though I had a credit card in my own name with me.
The agent told me that the first booking would be refunded and that a new booking would be created at the same price, or with a maximum difference of around €10. I was clearly led to believe that the new price would be around €510.
Instead, after the rental, I received a final invoice for €620.82, which is €120.14 more than my original prepaid booking.
The issue is not the refund of the first booking. The issue is that I was not clearly informed of the new price before accepting the new contract. If the agent had told me that I would be charged over €120 more, I would never have accepted the rental under those conditions.
I contacted Europcar customer service several times, but they simply replied that the new contract was subject to different rates. This does not solve the problem: customers must be clearly informed of the final price before payment, especially when the new booking is created because the agency refuses to proceed with an already prepaid reservation.
I feel misled and badly treated as a customer. The service was not transparent, the situation was poorly handled, and Europcar showed no real willingness to find a fair solution.
I do not recommend Europcar. Very disappointing experience.

SCAM ALERT: Avoid Europcar, especially at Orly Airport! Charged €100.04 despite Premium Full Coverage
SCAM & Unjustified Charges at Europcar Paris Orly Airport - Contract: 2105721842.
I am writing to publicly denounce an abusive charge and an act of absolute bad faith by Europcar France. I rented a vehicle from June 16 to June 21, 2026, picking it up and returning it at the Paris Orly Airport branch. At the time of booking, I purchased the Premium Protection plan (Full Insurance / Zero Excess). Despite having full coverage, Europcar has extra-charged my credit card the amount of 100.04 Euros, claiming "administrative fees for damages."
Furthermore, they are accusing me of causing damage to an area where a pre-existing scratch/dent was already officially registered prior to my rental. They falsely claim that the damage is now "larger." Statistically and logically, the probability of an independent event damaging a rental car in the exact same spot is close to zero.
This is a clear scam to make a customer pay for a pre-existing condition that should be fully covered under the premium insurance policy regardless.I tried to contact Europcar customer service multiple times through different channels to resolve this, but they never bothered to reply to my messages. In addition to seeking phone support from Europcar in Portugal (where an agent was the one who came up with this excuse about "administrative fees" to justify the charge), we have also sent multiple written inquiries to several of their corporate email addresses. They have completely ignored us.
Additionally, there are significant discrepancies between the signed contract and the final invoice:
Base Rental (Aluguer Base):
Contract 147.11 EUR / Invoice 127.92 EUR (Diff: -19.19 EUR)
Upgrade: Contract 207.00 EUR / Invoice 180.00 EUR (Diff: -27.00 EUR)
Premium Protection: Contract 158.42 EUR / Invoice 137.76 EUR (Diff: -20.66 EUR)
Assistance Plus: Contract 33.81 EUR / Invoice 29.40 EUR (Diff: -4.41 EUR)
Interior Protection: Contract 34.50 EUR / Invoice 30.00 EUR (Diff: -4.50 EUR)
Airport Service Fee (15%): Contract 0.00 EUR / Invoice 88.81 EUR (Diff: +88.81 EUR) -> Added post-rental
Fuel (Combustivel): Contract 0.00 EUR / Invoice 27.07 EUR (Diff: +27.07 EUR)
Damage Admin Fee: Contract 0.00 EUR / Invoice 87.00 EUR (Diff: +87.00 EUR) -> Invalid due to Full Coverage
TOTAL FACTURE: Contract 580.85 EUR / Invoice 707.96 EUR (Diff: +127.11 EUR)
Taking into account the specific amounts that differ, the combined sum of all items billed below the contracted rate is 75.76 EUR. Subtracting this from the invalid 87.00 EUR damage fee results in a net discrepancy of 11.24 EUR, which added to the remaining invoice differences (excluding the 27.07 EUR fuel charge) brings the total refund owed to us to exactly 100.04 EUR.
Europcar is completely ignoring my complaints and refusing to refund my money, violating the terms of the full insurance I paid for. Avoid renting with Europcar if you want to avoid hidden, abusive charges and zero customer support!

We rented at Carcassonne. I dealt with Mael for both the pick up and drop off and the experience couldn’t have been better. Mael was efficient and helpful and informative and gave me great confidence to book with Europcar again. Thank you.

No Customer Service
I am a tour guide and rented a minibus from Europcar, Blagnac Airport Toulouse. I had 6 clients in age from 71-80. An hour into our trip to the accommodation I relaized the air conditioning didn't work. Early the next morning I wrote to Europcar because none of their phone numbers go to the airport office. I did not hear back for 3 days. This was during the worst heatwave ever in France! The person who wrote me told me to call road service which I did, but they said they couldn't help me because the minibus wasn't broken down. He told me to call another office, but they wouldn't help me. I then took the minibus to a garage, but they couldn't help me without first getting an okay from Europcar, but as I said none of the numbers worked, so I couldn't even pay for the repair myself. I sent email after email to no avail. My clients spent 9 days in the minibus in extreme heat. I would have taken the minibus back to Europcar, but that would have been driving 4h in hellish heat. It was 132 degrees inside the minibus one day. When I returned the minibus they said someone would contact me directly, but this took a week. I've been given a refund of 200€ on a rental of over 1,000€. I will never use Europcar again. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Awful outfit. Cancelled our booking as it was a USA rate booking. Tried to charge €2000 for 9 days. We booked another car with them 2 days later and were charged for damage that we did not do to the car. Avoid.

Be very careful when collecting a car…
Be very careful when collecting a car at Charleroi Airport.
The rental agent asked whether I would be driving to France. After I confirmed that I would, I was told I had to pay an additional charge. Since DiscoverCars had shown an estimated cross-border fee, I reasonably believed this was the required cross-border charge (although much higher than expected).
Only afterwards did I discover that the amount had been added to the contract as an optional Roadside Assistance product, not as a cross-border fee. At no point was it clearly explained that I was purchasing an optional service instead of paying the cross-border fee we had just been discussing.
In my opinion, this is a misleading sales practice. I would never have purchased roadside assistance had it been presented as an optional product.

My family and I had to wait for 4 hours, and when it was finally our turn, we didn’t even receive a receipt, so we had to wait another hour. We couldn’t get the car we had booked, and instead we were given a terrible replacement car.
I do not recommend traveling with this company. The customer service was very poor, and the staff behaved in a rude and provocative manner. Terrible company.

Staff do not check the cars for damage…
Staff do not check the cars for damage prior to rental, documents are signed off as perfect when they're not. Very lucky I took a whole video of the car on pick up or Id have had to no doubt deal with an incident not managed properly by Eurocar from a prior hirer. Its not a hirers responsibility to prove they did not damage a car when staff can't be bothered to complete company documents properly.
I await the return of my 2 x 1 day 500 euro deposits which I had to pay even though Id paid for the premium cover at all levels, I hope that's dealt with better.
Eurocar needs modernisation with its processes.

Inflated Damage Claims
I hired a car from Europcar at Marseille Airport. The vehicle itself was fine and the collection and return process was straightforward.
On returning the car, I honestly reported a scrape to the underside of the front bumper that had occurred during the rental. The branch staff advised that the damage would need to be assessed by an expert before they could tell me what the repair would cost.
A few days later I discovered a charge of approximately £964 pending on my credit card without any prior explanation. When I contacted Europcar customer services, they were unable to see the charge on their system or explain what it related to. They opened an investigation and advised it would take 3 to 5 business days.
Only later did I receive a damage invoice for over €1,100, which simply described the cost as a "Damage Surcharge" together with an administration fee. It did not include an itemised repair estimate or explain how the repair cost had been calculated.
I accept responsibility for the damage and understand that repairs have to be paid for. My dissatisfaction is with the lack of communication and transparency throughout the process. Customers should receive a clear explanation and supporting documentation before such a significant charge is applied to their card.
Overall, the experience left me with very little confidence in Europcar's damage claims process. I will not use this company again
