The hire car was badly damaged when I picked it up. I didn't expect this much external damage with Europcar. This hire cost €35 per day (we did not buy extra insurance) with unlimited mileage.

They charged me for a damage which was already there when i rented the car. I have a pocture but because it is unsharp they are not accepting it. It is scandalous to hand over a car with small damages all around and then charging the client for these damages. Never again

Pros and Cons

I am a returning user of Europcar, and also of the broker Discover Cars in this review.

Pros of Europcar:
* Organised, ticketed queue for pickup.
* Clean and modern car, and gave no issues.

Cons of Europcar:
* During pick-up, they saw the size of our luggage and tried to upsell a larger car, which is standard practice. However, when I declined and mentioned that we've previously fit the same luggage into the car that I've picked (I understand it's never guaranteed that you will get the car you've picked, but often you do), the car suddenly was unavailable. I instantly recognised that the car offered, from the same range, had a slightly smaller boot. We ended up having to drive with a suitcase in the cabin, which was not a pleasant experience. I've hired plenty of cars over the years, and understand this could have been a genuine scenario, or potentially 'punishment' for not taking the upsell.
* After this, they next wanted to charge me the one-way rental fee, which I have paid at the desk in the past, but for this rental this was prepaid to Discover Cars (the rental itself plus the one-way rental fee), and had the voucher explaining this. They would not release the car to me without paying this directly to them, and asked that I take this up with Discover Cars. In the end I had to pay this fee to Europcar too and now in a dispute with both parties for this mix-up. It has been three weeks since and neither party has resolved this. (My review for Discover Cars also mentions this, and being honest, as of writing I don't know which party caused the issue). The takeaway here is that documents and agreements from brokers are NOT authoritative nor respected by Europcar.
* During drop-off, and as often instructed by Discover Cars, I started to take a video of the car. This appeared to make the attendant uncomfortable and more determined to find an issue. They highlighted a mark, less than 2cm, which they said was not on the paperwork. Once I mentioned I also have a video taken during pickup, they simply continued with processing the drop-off, even without seeing the video, and did not mention the mark ever again.

Europcar Palma de Mallorca Airport is…

Europcar Palma de Mallorca Airport is THE WORST car rental company we have ever experienced, purely down to their lack of customer service. The 2 members of staff who served us on Saturday 15th August 2026 around 9/9:30pm should honestly be fired or leave the vocation of customer service as they definitely do not understand the meaning of it. If I could give this company a rating of 0 I would. The 2 staff members a woman and the only man serving were so rude that when I informed them I would be complaining about them, neither would give their names. The man said “go ahead, go to our head office and complain” and the woman argued that she shouldn’t be reprimanded for her colleagues rudeness toward us, however she laughed every time he was rude to us and never corrected him for being rude. So honestly, she is just as bad.
We will never be using this service again and from other reviews I have read this is clearly an ongoing issue of the company.

Disappointing experience. Undisclosed damage and unexpected extra charges

My main advice to anyone renting from them is simple: document absolutely everything when you collect the vehicle.

According to our booking, the car was scheduled for collection at 5:00 p.m. We arrived around 30 minutes early and were perfectly prepared to wait until the official opening time. However, a Europcar employee was already there, invited us into the office on her own initiative and handed over the vehicle early.

We were later charged EUR 63.80 for “extended service hours.” We had never requested an earlier collection and were never told that accepting the employee’s invitation to come inside would result in an additional fee. Had we known, we would simply have waited until 5:00 p.m. Charging customers for a service they did not request, simply because an employee decided to process the rental early, is completely unacceptable in my opinion.

There were also problems with the fuel. The vehicle was not handed over with a full tank, yet we were later charged additional amounts for fuel and a refuelling service. This is why I strongly recommend taking a clear photo of the fuel gauge at collection and again at return. I regret not taking a photo of the dashboard when I collected the car.

There was already paint damage on the car that had apparently not been documented. I noticed it myself and reported it before leaving. Had I not inspected the car carefully, I would have been seriously concerned that I might later have been held responsible for damage that was already present.

The vehicle itself was also different from what I had booked. The reservation was for a VW T-Roc SUV or similar, whereas we received a Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Just to be clear, the Mercedes was actually a slight upgrade in terms of vehicle class. However, for the mountain roads in the Málaga hinterland, I would have preferred a car with more ground clearance — which is precisely why I had booked an SUV in the first place.

To be fair, there was one genuinely positive aspect: returning the car at Málaga Airport worked perfectly and was completely straightforward. The return procedure itself caused no problems at all.

Unfortunately, that does not outweigh the problems with the collection, fuel, undocumented damage and additional charges.

After this experience, I can understand why there are so many negative customer reviews about Europcar. In my case, the way additional charges were handled felt extremely customer-unfriendly and lacking in transparency.

My advice to future customers: photograph the entire vehicle from every angle, document every scratch and defect, photograph the fuel level and mileage, and make sure that every discrepancy is recorded in writing before you drive away.

admin and customer service is a horrible experience

car was given to me filty . terrible rude staff on phone when looking to extend rental . no receipts ever provided except on initial hire in store . I extended the hire by 8 weeks and dropped back at airport . received notification that the return was perfect . despite my telling them I had received a parking ticket which I had tried to pay multiple time which took the council 3 weeks to enter in system . the cost was sent to me and I payed in full immediately . their pay window said paid in full . 4 weeks layer I started to receive legal threats from their debt collection department for a 40 euro outstanding balance . requests for invoices and explanation ignored eventually after many many attempts to receive some clarification I discovered it was an admin charge for them to send me the email . I paid it immediately but when I asked them why they never sent me an invoice explaining this charge and what it was they said its in our terms and conditions . all very well if THEY HAD TOLD ME IT WAS AN ADMIN CHARGE . they lost a customer for good . worst people to deal with so rude and unhelpfull

We hired the Service through an online broker and added an insurance. When we got to the counter, they told us we had no insurance, suggested we had been scammed and made us buy a new much more expensive insurance on the spot. Turns out we didn’t need it and we ended up paying much more for the whole reservation than we had planed

This agency is from far the worst…

This agency is from far the worst experience I ever had. I'm traveling every other months. Hypocrite, car dirty and in a bad state (20+ listed defects communicated at the very last moment), commercial guy not clear at all trying to do 5x more expensive on my rent (pretending to offer me a "discount"). I do not recommend this Europcar agency.

Fraud

Europcar denied our international drivers licenses and demanded we pay an additional insurance despite having third party. What was supposed to be a 1100$ rental turned into 2700$.
Car was damaged upon pick up we took photos and acknowledged it. Returned car early because we had a 6am flight. 1 month later at home in Canada received a bill and they had already charged our card 500$ for the damage that was on the car when we picked it up. Criminals.

We had a confirmEuropcar Barcelona, Spain – Confirmed Booking, No Car, No Refunded booking with…

We had a confirmed booking with Europcar for pickup in Barcelona, Spain. On arrival, the rental counter told us they had no car available - despite the confirmed reservation. When we asked staff to confirm this in writing, they flatly refused, conveniently making it harder for us to claim a refund. We were left stranded and had to book a replacement car from a different company on the spot, at our own cost (€430.43).

We requested a refund of the original booking amount. Europcar has promised - verbally, on multiple occasions - to return the payment, but weeks later we still haven't received a cent.

A confirmed booking should mean a car is actually available. If a supplier can't deliver, the least they can do is put it in writing and refund promptly. Europcar did neither. Never rent from Europcar.

Hired a car in Malaga airport online…

Hired a car in Malaga airport online was told when we got there we were best to upgrade the car as the car was very small , I overheard a conversation from the Europcar representative saying they had no automatics which we had booked so basically they sold us an upgrade due to this . But also the car was awful 50000 km but looked more like it had been around the clock. The interior wasn’t great the exterior had a dent or scratch one every side . We had taken a child’s car seat so fitted it in and off we went. We did about 800 over 1 week child in car seat all the time. We then returned the car to Malaga airport and they said all good no scratches I said thank you and went to the office where I was told to take the key. When I arrived they had photos of the inside of the car and said the back seat is dirty and the cleaners would charge so I looked at the photo it was a 1” x 1” area so I returned to the car and it was sand I brushed it off and returned to the desk with a photo then she said all the seat was dirty ! I explained that is how we got the car it is the wear of the seat she replied that she had already spoken to the valet and that the car wasn’t like that so basically we wore the seats out in our 800 km not the 50000km before we rented the car ! She then was very rude saying is this how you treat your car , I said yes I treated it how I treat my car as I didn’t do that she then gave a very rude smirk .
Seriously avoid at all costs.

Insurance scam

Wait for car hire was 20 minutes, that was the most positive thing. The person at the desk tried to sell me a more expensive and larger car but i declined multiple times, i know what i booked just give me that class of car. They told me i was getting a smaller car initially, then at the end of the process said oh you can have what you paid for.
I specifically declined additional insurance, but they added it on anyway and charged me 230 eur for it! This is the second worst hire company i've ever used in spain, only beaten by the 3 hour wait in mallorca when using Goldcar, will never use either again. I'll see if i get a refund, i doubt it.

Beware of forced upgrades

Beware of forced upgrades – Extremely disappointing experience with Europcar Spain

My experience with Europcar Spain was one of the worst I have ever had with a car rental company.

I had reserved a Škoda Kamiq (or similar compact SUV) well in advance. When I arrived at the rental desk, I was informed that the SUV was not available and was offered a Volkswagen Golf instead.

I explained that I had specifically booked an SUV because I was travelling with my family and needed that type of vehicle.

I was then told that if I wanted a comparable SUV, I would have to pay an additional €571 for a BYD Seal U.

Faced with no practical alternative and already beginning my trip, I reluctantly accepted and paid the extra charge.

After the rental, I contacted Europcar requesting a refund because I believe I should not have been forced to pay extra simply because the vehicle category I booked was allegedly unavailable.

Europcar rejected my complaint, claiming the upgrade was “optional”. This is not consistent with what I was told at the rental counter.

Even more disappointing, when I asked Europcar to provide documentary evidence showing which vehicle had originally been assigned to my reservation and proving that my booked category was actually available, they refused to provide any of the requested documentation and simply repeated the rental office’s version of events.

As a customer, I expected transparency, fairness and accountability. Instead, I experienced poor customer service and a refusal to properly investigate a legitimate complaint.

I encourage anyone renting from Europcar to carefully check every document before signing and to question any additional charges imposed at the rental desk.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Europcar.

Europcar Spain. Alicante Airport

Picked up a car at Alicante airport with full accidental damage insurance from another c.
There was lots of existing damage to the car which was acknowledged by the Europcar staff.
On returning the car, the member of staff went straight to a very small area of the windscreen and identified 3 tiny chips. She did not inspect any other area of the windscreen.
Europcar then charged me £101. Whilst I recovered this sum from my insurer with relative ease I considered Europcar action to be nothing more than a scam to extract further money from either myself or the insurance company.
I will never use Europcar again.

Terrible company

Terrible company, booked a minibus for my family holiday to Spain, when I collected the bus they wanted TWO credit cards, a credit card and debit card wasn’t any good and without TWO credit cards I couldn’t hire the bus id booked unless I took out their insurance at €500 plus deposit, however if I took a lesser vehicle with 13 dents and scratches it was fine. Very unhelpful unless I paid more money on top of an already expensive bus. I thought I was booking with a reputable company but I’m sorry to say they’ll never get my business again. Stay well clear.

Unfair charges

I rented the car from Malaga Airport Europcar.

The car itself was excellent. We were given a SEAT, which was different to the one we booked but comfortable, smooth to drive, and perfect for exploring Andalusia. Returning the vehicle was also quick and straightforward, and the staff confirmed there was no damage or scratches.

Unfortunately, the collection process left a very poor impression.

At the counter, I felt under constant pressure to upgrade to a more expensive vehicle. After I declined, I was then strongly encouraged to purchase Europcar’s insurance, despite already having comprehensive insurance through the broker (Planet Rentals). I was repeatedly told that my insurance would not cover scratches and that I could end up paying an excess of €2,300 to Europcar. This was simply not consistent with my rental voucher, which clearly stated that no excess would be payable under my policy.

The most disappointing part came after I returned home. I noticed an additional charge of £77 on my card. When I contacted customer service, I was told it was for a navigation system that had supposedly been added to my booking. I never requested a navigation system, nor was one provided with the vehicle. I am now having to pursue a refund for a charge that should never have been applied.

It’s a shame because the car itself and the return experience were genuinely very good. However, the aggressive upselling at collection and the unexpected additional charge have left me feeling that too much emphasis is placed on extracting extra money from customers rather than providing transparent and fair service.

I hope Europcar resolves the £77 charge promptly, but based on my experience at Malaga Airport, I would be cautious about renting from this branch again.

Hired in the UK for pickup at girona airport. Its a little walk from the terminal with no clear signage but once there it was all good. No high pressure sakes tactics, nice BYD car. Pick up was quick. Best bit was the return as this was early morning at 7, before opening hours yet there was a staff member there to sign car back in efficiently. I'd had no issues with car and she signed it all off there and then. Deposit money released from credit card a couple of days later. Would recommend.
