Poor experience with E.P. House
I'm sharing my experience with E.P. House Publishing and owner Kristin Bentley so other authors can make an informed decision.
In 2023, I paid EP House $5,700 for a masterclass and editing for my book, Creative and Obsessed: Interviews with Artists from Around the World. In January 2023, Kristin told me to tell the artists I was recruiting that the book would be published with a traditional publisher and distribution to over 40,000 vendors. I relayed that to every artist. She showed great enthusiasm very early on for publishing my book. Therefore, I obviously assumed that she would be publishing and distributing my book, especially after me having promised this to the artists. No written contract was ever provided by Kristin.
The book was due out in Fall 2024. The date then moved to June 2025, December 2025, and January 2026. After that, no new dates were given.
The editing was slow and introduced errors, and my numerous corrections were not fully made. Communication with Kristin was poor; for example, once I sent four emails asking for updates on my book and had to wait several weeks for a reply.
On August 7, 2026, nearly four years in, Kristin dropped me as a client, saying the book and printing were beyond her scope. No cover was delivered, and the book was never published.
She then cited a cancellation policy I had never seen; it is not on her website or in any materials she gave me. Had I known I could cancel, or that my payment didn't cover publication, I would have left years earlier or never hired her. After I made the $5700 investment, I just figured I was trapped and had to stay the course with Kristin until she published my book.
My request for a partial refund of $3,800 was refused.
I lost nearly four years and have no book to show for it.
If you're considering EP House, get a signed contract stating exactly what you're paying for, what will be delivered, and by when, before you pay anything.
