Do not recommend

Do not recommend! Ordered $2500 in equipment several months ago but it has not arrived. When you reach out to customer support it takes over a week to get a response. The response is they don’t know when it will ship- backlog of orders. They should state this on the website before you order this stuff!

I'm an architecture researcher working…

I'm an architecture researcher working on human-centered architectural environments and cognitive performance. I have been using the EMOTIV EPOC X in my academic research to collect EEG-based data related to cognitive load, attention, and user experience in different architectural spaces.

One of the most useful features for my work is the ability to collect brain activity data in a relatively portable and flexible setup. This has been especially valuable for studying how participants respond to different spatial conditions, immersive environments, and architectural design variations. The EMOTIV EPOC X helped me address an important research challenge: connecting subjective experience in architecture with measurable cognitive and physiological data.

The main benefit for my research is that it allows me to move beyond only surveys or visual observations and include neuroscience-informed evidence in evaluating architectural environments. It has positively impacted my work by supporting a more evidence-based and human-centered approach to design research. For my academic projects, the device has been valuable in helping me better understand how architectural spaces may influence cognitive load, focus, comfort, and mental workload.

Overall, the EMOTIV EPOC X has been a valuable tool for my research in architecture, especially for exploring the relationship between spatial experience and cognitive response. I would recommend it to researchers who are interested in integrating EEG data, human perception, and design evaluation into their academic or applied research.

I have used Emotiv software to carry…

I have used Emotiv software to carry out my doctoral research, and it has proven to be a highly useful tool for collecting electroencephalography (EEG) data. Its wireless design, combined with an integrated motion sensor, has also enabled me to record data related to participants' movements while they performed tasks within an immersive virtual reality environment. My experience has been very positive, as the company's technical support has consistently provided effective guidance in resolving any difficulties.

The Emotiv Flex 2 Gel device, which I used in my study, operates with the company's proprietary software for data recording, which is quite intuitive and easy to manage. One of the main advantages of this equipment is its wireless nature, allowing EEG data to be collected in situations where participants are engaged in activities or moving around in real-world settings. This greatly expands the possibilities for research development in naturalistic environments, increasing the validity and applicability of the findings.

Great for research sessions once you learn the setup

I’ve been using EMOTIVPRO with the EPOC X for several months in a small human factors research setting, mainly for attention and cognitive workload testing. My experience has been very positive overall.

What stood out first was the fact that the headset feels much more “research-capable” than most consumer-grade EEG devices I’ve tried. The data quality has been good enough for repeated session work, especially when we take the time to prep properly and make sure contact quality is solid before recording. EMOTIVPRO itself is also much more useful than the lighter apps because it gives enough control over recording and review to make it feel like a serious tool rather than a novelty.

That said, this is not a “take it out of the box and become an expert in 10 minutes” product. There is definitely a learning curve. The first few sessions took longer than I expected because I had to get comfortable with sensor placement, hydration/contact consistency, and best practices for reducing noise. Once I got into a routine, setup became much faster and the recordings became much more consistent.

A few things I liked:

* Good signal monitoring during setup
* Useful for repeated protocol-based recordings
* Comfortable enough for longer sessions
* Software feels aimed at actual structured use, not just demos

What could be improved:

* Initial onboarding could be smoother
* New users may underestimate how important setup discipline is
* Documentation could do a better job explaining “why” signal quality changes, not just “what” to click

Overall, I’d recommend EMOTIVPRO + EPOC X to anyone who understands that EEG work always involves some patience and process. Once you respect that, it becomes a very capable system

If you pay , money will go , you get nothing

I paid 149$ for the standard subscription but they didn’t activate nor responded to 6 emails.
‼️Imagine This, you pay 149$ for a software subscription ( 1 month only ) ! , you finished the payment and paid 149$ , BUT you don’t get the software activation nor even a response!! This is scientifically and socially immoral . You be the judge !
Now subscription lasts for a 1 month only but it has been about a week and they aren’t answering my emails. The only mail I got is a general explanation and a video instruction !!! I need the software activation and no YouTube vidoes. Extremely odd!

After the purchase of an Emotiv Epoc X…

After the purchase of an Emotiv Epoc X device, I communicated with the customer service of the company and was surprised how they answered quickly to all my questions in a very understanding way. This is a company that values customer relationships. This is the fist time I bought something there and, honestly, I have to give them 5 stars.

Defective Materials — Poor Support Experience

The plastic components started to become extremely brittle and began crumbling. The headset was stored and maintained exactly as recommended by the manufacturer.

When I contacted Emotiv support, I explained that many other customers have reported the same deterioration, indicating a recurring manufacturing/material defect. Instead of acknowledging the problem, they suggested it was due to “hygiene and storage” and offered only a 25% discount on a new model — essentially asking me to spend $750 more to replace a defective product they sold me.

Extremely Disappointing Experience – Poor Support and Unethical Subscription Policy

We are an academic research group that purchased a 5-year EmotivPRO subscription for $2,851.20, only to find out afterward that our university only reimburses 1-year subscriptions. Despite the fact that the license had not been used Emotiv refused to issue a proper refund of 4 years, offering instead a mere $52.20 in store credit after downgrading our license to 1 year.

This response is completely unacceptable — it essentially means we paid for 5 years and received 1 year of service, with no real refund or recourse. There is no way to speak to a human being, no live customer support, and their so-called "12-hour response" promise took over a week. By the time they replied, our research had already been delayed significantly. We were also misled by their website, which did not disclose low stock, causing the device to arrive nearly a month late.

As a result, the cost of this mistake now falls personally on a student because the university cannot reimburse out-of-policy purchases. The entire experience — from the lack of transparency to the dismissive support and absence of ethical refund handling — has been mentally exhausting and disruptive to our research.

I cannot recommend Emotiv to academic institutions or researchers. Be extremely cautious before purchasing — especially long-term subscriptions — and do not expect timely or reasonable customer support.

Bad shipping, hard to use, bad return policy


Let's start with the purchase process. To be fair, Emotiv did warn me that it will be slow, but it took more than two months to get the device (Epoc X headband).

The initial setup was very frustrating, because there is no quick-start guide. There is a launcher of A LOT of their apps (most of which require a separate subscription), but there is no single guide: "here's how you get the basics done".

Then, usage -- extremely hard to use. I spent two hours trying to connect it, including soaking the contact pads in saline solution, but connection never exceeds 33% and EEG quality never exceeds 25%, making it useless.

Final -- very obscure and complex return policy that is based on the date when they shipped the device to you instead of when you received it. Additionally, you are fully responsible for the shipping (you take all the costs and risks) and finally, they will only refund you 75% of the cost of the headband.

Overall, I am very disappointed in Emotive and I don't think I'll ever get anything from them again. I'm keeping the headband for a sole reason that it's easier to reimburse it from my company than to ship it back.

Headset broke after 1 month and I had…

Headset broke after 1 month and I had many issues. One, it is very hard to get a good quality signal. The subject has to basically be extremely still. My subjects were watching a video and the signals still dropped. The data I got was useless. Second, I tried contacting support after the headband snapped and after two months couldn’t reach anyone. The phone number wasn’t working either. I question the validity of this company. I think it’s going downhill.

Since the package has been returned by UPS, I will have to wait for my factory to confirm receipt of the returned package. Only then I will be able to get approval for a refund of your package.

I totally understand the inconvenience it must have caused you, I have raised an issue with UPS for the return of the package. Kindly can you help confirm if UPS did contact you to processs payment of D$T for your package or not?

The refund will be order amount less shipping and handling fee.
