Next again.
Shuttle was O.K., I got the car in ca. 30 min after landing. Insurance does not cover dirt road driving in the previously defined Avakas -Akamas area. I was properly informed about this condition. This was no constraint at all, anyone prefer to hike on those roads.
Potentially criminal behaviour from Elephant
Elephant Rent a Car in Paphos are a DODGY company.
They steal tourists money with sneaky underhanded methods.
We rented a car, an old car, which was fine, but old cars are not spic and spam in condition. When returning the old car, the huge enlarged dentist mirror came out and underside damage was inspected for.
That is not fair, as although no damage was found, we were not shown photos of the underside of the car prior to hire, so we wouldn't have been able to determine whether or not we were responsible for any damage.
We did however get deducted 300 euros from our 900 euros deposit. 190 euros for a slight 1 cm scratch on the rear bumper that you could only see when you look from a different angle. We don't know if we did that or not !
The remaining 110 euros was for driving off road. We were told about the strange off road tracker clause, and when my wife asked where he meant, the guy told us The Blue Lagoon. So we didn't go to the Blue Lagoon.
He didn't tell us about anywhere else, He didn't tell us about Adonis' Baths. We visited there, and followed a road sign that told us that 'ADONIS BATHS....THE ROAD IS GOOD FOR ALL CARS.' There were 6 more signs saying the same thing along the road. Many other hire cars also assumed the same, because we saw them driving the same road. It was busy. It wasn't a good road, but as the sign stated, it was a road. So by definition, not off road !
We returned the car to be told we had gone off road. I told the guy we hadn't driven off road, as there had been 7 signs telling us it was a road. He replied that the guy from the restaurant put the signs up to get business. If he knew of this, he certainly didn't tell us.
Elephant Cars had pre knowledge of an 'off road' tourist destination that tourists would have a high likelihood of wishing to visit, that was signposted as a 'road.' It is a 'honey trap.' It is also deception, and potentially fraud.
What Elephant are doing is illegal or at least very close to being illegal !!
Those road signs should be taken down immediately, or at least all tourists should be explicitly warned of ALL off road destinations that will be charged for.
We wonder how many other gullible tourists fall for this as we did ?
We also wonder if the entire reason for having a tracker on the car is to attempt to raise as much extra revenue as possible through this devious method. Stranded motorists are extremely rare, but have usually got mobile telephones equipped with phones, location maps, torches etc. It would seem like a sneaky facility for extra revenue.
We are very frustrated with Elephant Cars, and we suggest you research them thoroughly if you insist on using them ! They still have 110 euros of our money !! That's theft in our book.
We have used Elephant cars for years…
We have used Elephant cars for years now . Always a reliable friendly service. Very competitive prices. Good collection and drop off service. With contact details incase you need them.
Straightforward Rental
Recently rented a car from this company from 16th-21st November for my trip to Cyprus.
I arranged my rental via a 3rd party website and feel that the whole process was straightforward and easy.
I felt that my experience being picked up from the airport, receiving the car and handing it back all went great.
I was advised about not going off-road with the vehicle (150 euro penalty) at the outset and was made aware of avoiding the Adonis Baths Waterfalls for that very reason.
Did have to pay a 900 euro deposit upon collection of the vehicle, I received this entire amount back in full the day I handed the car back at the office. They did a quick check of the exterior and underside of the vehicle using a mirror, that being said I had no issues whatsoever.
The car I received had no technical/performance issues and was really easy to use.
From my experience I would recommend this company and would use them again on my next Cyprus trip.
Efficient service with a high standard
Very efficient service and car supplied was to a high standard. The car was dropped off at my hotel and we returned it back to the airport. Great service and I would certainly hire from Elephant again. Thanks for the simple explanation about the process and driving in Cyprus John, you put my mind at ease.
Excellent from Start to Finish
Used Elephant before. Their service is impeccable. We booked on line for a months rental with 3 drivers; 4 ladies for the first two weeks. Elephant made the process easy and we felt safe. Had a problem with the breaks; they came out within the hour and sorted it immediately. Lovely clean car. Will define use them again.
The third time we used Elephant and still good
We have just returned from a holiday and its the third time we used Elephant, met us at the airport with an easy to read sign, (we were an hour late as we were delayed at Luton Airport). Took us to their depot which was about a 5 minute drive away, wasn't bothered by this given the speed to taxi drivers were driving at around the airport car parks! The car was ready, all cleaned, we were told to take pictures the next day (it was dark when we picked the car up) which we did, they warned us about not going off road which we didn't. Returned the car in plenty of time, I must say having read the other reviews I was also surprised about the checking of the underside of the car for damage as they hadn't said they would do this when we collected the car however everything was okay and we got our deposit back in full, no questions asked. They then took us to the airport terminal building - all good. A completely different experience to one we had last year in France - Gold Car - never ever use them unless you want hassle!
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
Family holiday to Cyprus. We was met at the airport by this company. They are supposed to drive you to their rental base! They didn't have room for us all. They left my wife and children waiting alone for nearly an hour!
They tell you to check and take photos of the car when you pick the car up! Take that advice! I filmed the car so I had good evidence. What I didn't do was look under the car!
When I returned the car, they check under the car with a mirror! (They do not do this with you on collection) OH, we have found some damage (two scratches underneath the front bumper)! They then take £150 from your deposit,, as of course they need to now replace the bumper!
My advice would be to take your money else where and use a decent company. This company is clearly out to scam holidaymakers.
Great all-round experience, no frills but decent service
Elephant Rent a car in Paphos was a no frills but decent car hire service.
We were picked up at the airport and was taken to their office at around midnight, our flights were delayed so it got busy for a lot of hire car places.
I was concerned whether or not there would be anyone working at this time but there were people there waiting with a 'Elephant car rental' sign. Their office is about 5 mins away from the airport.
Everyone spoke English well and was picked up by a Brit which was surprising but also comforting.
Paperwork was thorough and before the booking all the things were clearly shown (£900 deposit taken before). I'm not sure why other reviewers were shocked by this, as it was quite clear.
There was also lots of signage about 150 euro fine for going off-road and the guy in the office showed us examples of what is off-road is. Yes there's dirt roads and questionable dirt parking areas, but off-road was quite obvious.
Returning the car was fine, a few inspections and deposit returned hassle free. We were also dropped off at airport by them too.
Would defintely use again and would recommend.
Like other reviews
Like other reviews, provided with a complete nail of a car and break’s grinding , auto box had a mind of its own. Stole €150 off deposit as said I went ‘off road’ ( which it states on agreement - fair enough ) but when I returned they said it was because I went off tarmac roads !!! Bearing in mind considering Cyprus road network a large proportion are not tarmac eg the Hotel Car park is dusty / gravel . So what the contract states and what they interpret the contract as, are not consistent. Be warned!!
I'm absolutely livid with the appalling…
I'm absolutely livid with the appalling experience I endured with Elephant in Paphos. This wasn't just bad, it was the absolute worst car rental experience I've ever suffered through.
What really gets my blood boiling is the downright deceitful practice they pulled when I returned the vehicle. They brought out a mirror to inspect the underside of the vehicle, of all places, hunting for any little scrape or scratch they could find. This was a totally unexpected, low-down dirty trick, and the result? A whopping €150 snatched from my deposit without any warning!
As if that wasn't enough, the car they pawned off on me was a complete clunker! It guzzled fuel like there was no tomorrow, and I swear it felt like it would fall apart every time I took it onto the highway. With the €150 they fleeced off me, I could probably have bought a better car!
Elephant in Paphos is running a racket with their outrageous deposit and damage policies, and they're handing out vehicles that should be in a scrapyard, not on the road. If you're thinking about renting a car in Paphos, do yourself a favor and steer clear of these swindlers! They have absolutely no respect for their customers, and their 'policies' are as clear as mud.
Horrible
Without a doubt, it is the worst car rental experience I have ever had.
The surprise came upon returning the vehicle. They used a mirror to meticulously inspect the underside of the car, looking for the slightest scratch. This surprise inspection resulted in an unjust €150 deduction from my deposit. I was never warned that they would carry out this practice, which I deem to be deeply underhanded and low.
To make matters worse, the car they provided was noticeably old, with a surprisingly high fuel consumption. Every time I got onto the highway, it felt like it was going to disintegrate at any moment. Ironically, with the €150 they deducted from me, I could probably have bought a car in better condition than the one I rented.
Elephant in Paphos seems to operate with extremely questionable deposit and damage policies and provides vehicles that fall far below any acceptable standard. If you're considering renting a car in Paphos, I urge you to look elsewhere. Based on my experience, Elephant in Paphos shows a lack of respect for customers and a complete absence of transparency in their policies.
A Chaotic Car Rental Experience Without an Office at the airport
As an experienced globetrotter with a decade of car rentals to my credit, never before had I encountered such disorder as I did with Elephant in Paphos. This was, by far, the most disconcerting car rental service I have experienced.
Upon arrival at the airport, I expected to find an Elephant office in the terminal, as is typical with other car rental companies. However, after a futile search that lasted an hour, I had to call to find out what was transpiring. It was only then that they informed me that they send someone to pick up customers. What an unwelcome surprise!
In addition to this initial lack of transparency, the inspection of the car upon return was another debacle. They employed a mirror to scrutinize the undercarriage of the vehicle, something they never mentioned during the rental process. This 'surprise' inspection resulted in a €150 deduction from my deposit as, according to them, I had ventured off paved roads, which their insurance does not cover.
Elephant in Paphos appears to operate with an unfair deposit and damages policy, offering vehicles that are noticeably aged. If you are contemplating renting a car in Paphos, I would strongly urge you to explore other options. Based on my encounter, Elephant in Paphos exhibits a profound lack of respect for customers and a complete lack of transparency in their policies.
Unpleasant Surprise with Elephant in Paphos - Car Rental Gone Wrong
Never in my history of renting vehicles have I stumbled upon such shrewd practices.
It was during the car return that I was met with a rather shocking revelation - a mirror-assisted inspection of the car’s undercarriage. This wasn't something they had mentioned when I rented the car. Had they been forthright about this unusual inspection, I would have taken the time to examine the car in depth before renting. Or better still, I might have opted for a different rental service, particularly considering the well-known poor condition of Cypriot roads.
The sting in the tail came with an unexpected deduction of €150 from my deposit. They attributed this to my alleged detour off paved roads – a scenario, they conveniently explained, was not covered by their insurance policy.
Elephant in Paphos left a bitter taste in my mouth with their noticeably aged fleet and what I can only describe as a manipulative deposit and damage policy. If you're contemplating car rental in Paphos, I would strongly urge you to consider other providers.
A Disappointing Car Rental Service
Caution with Elephant in Paphos - A Disappointing Car Rental Service
As someone who has been renting cars for over a decade, I feel it's my obligation to share my experience with the car rental company Elephant in Paphos. In my many years of renting vehicles, I have never come across such dishonest and misleading practices.
Upon returning the car, I was met with a surprise: they used a mirror to meticulously inspect the undercarriage of the vehicle, a practice that they had not communicated to me at any point during the rental process. Had I known this, I would have previously checked for any existing damage in that hard-to-see area of the car. Moreover, I would have likely avoided renting from them, especially considering the woeful state of the roads in Cyprus.
To add insult to injury, due to this inspection, they withheld 150 euros from my deposit, arguing that I had strayed off paved roads, a circumstance that, conveniently, their insurance does not cover.
Elephant in Paphos provides notably old vehicles and employs a deposit and damage policy that I consider unfair. If you are considering renting a car in Paphos, I strongly advise you to seek alternatives. Respect for customers and transparency in policies are fundamental aspects in this type of services, and in my experience, Elephant in Paphos fails severely in both.
Dont use them!!
Dont use them!!! on the day of our arrival, we picked up the car and paid the remaining amount, as well as the deposit, and drove from the airport to our hotel, the next day we wanted to meet for the planned birthday party of our friends' son in Protaras, but the car did not start due to a discharged battery. We contacted the representative and he said that he would be able to arrive no earlier than in 30 minutes, which did not suit us and we had to use the services of a taxi, which cost us 30 euros. Company representative jump start a car next morning and after that, I left the engine running for 25 minutes to charge the battery, but the battery does not charge, after that the company replaced the battery, and tried to blame me for not turning off the ignition correctly.with which I absolutely did not agree, but to make sure that turning off the car correctly I checked with company representative and he agreed that I was doing everything correctly. After replacing the battery, we went to the beach.after five hours on the beach, the representative of the company called me and said in a very rude manner that he saw that the ignition was not turned off in the car during the entire time, that it would discharge the battery again, which is exactly what happened.after which we had an unpleasant conversation in which I once again emphasized that the car is not working and needs to be replaced,(Most cars these days with keyless ignition systems will shut off if the gas feed isn't touched for 30 minutes unless someone modified them, while fitting tracking devices within not with official dialer, on the black market)to which he said that he was taking the car and return remaining balance of the rent, that left us without a rental car and were unable to get to the airport at the end of our vacation. On top of that we were given an old car with 96000 mileage with a broken undercarriage, also upon arrival at the airport we spent a good 15 minutes to find a representative, after which he took us to a parking lot that is several miles from the airport, which also took some time. During the registration the car company does not block the deposit but withdraws it, be aware that you will lose a certain amount during the return transaction and it will also take several days to return the money to you, then instead of a full tank we were given only half and I had to look for a gas station in the middle of the night. Also, during the delivery of the car, they said that it is dark in the yard and it does not make sense to check the car for damage, and in the rank they will send by mail photos of the car from all sides, which they honestly took before our arrival. I would not advise anyone to use this company.
Excellent Company Highly Recommended
I've used this company 7-8 times now and the service has been absolutely faultless. The team are a very friendly & polite bunch. The owner Pambos is an absolute gentleman. I cannot fault the service, the car or anything. Best car hire company around Pafos by far in my experience. I'll definitely be a long time customer and I'd happily highly recommend them to everyone. Deposit is €350 which is returned to you when you give car back so not sure why someone else said its €1000, that's absolute rubbish

They went straight to it too, instinctively as they knew what to do, please understand I have bn in the car trade for over 40yrs.
Great service, staff were polite and helpful
We had booked our hire through easyjet and this was the company we ended up with. Excellent service, staff were helpful and polite. We were upgraded due to short supply of smaller cars. On return quick inspection no issues and they drove us back to the airport. Things to note: they don't have a desk in the airport there's a person stood outside with a board, they then shuttled us to their depot about a 3 minute drive. As it was dark on arrival they sent us pictures and said for us to check the car in the morning when it was light and let them know if we disagreed. Easy drop off, quick check then they take you to the airport. They do check under the car with a mirror as pointed out by another review we guessed this is due to the extremely high curbs which if you park too close to could cause damage so be aware of how you park in Cyprus.
Great company would highly recommend…
Great company would highly recommend picked me up at airport helped with loading and unloading luggage. I read few bad reviews that at first put me off. after renting a car for the week with this company my family and i had great experience exploring island in nice clean car the full deposit was returned after inspection of car an no damage can't fault company at all. Only advice is to drive careful in cyprus as curbs are huge if you you try to drive up them you will damage underside of car and not to use your rental car for offroading. Will definitely be using them agen in near future thanks paris.
