Amazing software for gamedev

Hey 👋

TLDR at the end 🙂

I'm lead dev at JeFawk's Spaghettorium where we make 2D games mainly, coupled with some other projects which include website design, video production, and photography (mostly for marketing purposes).

First off, this software is really amazing. As a programmer I have a very small idea of how complex it is to design and code such a program, to allow it to have the features it does and to keep the performance good. They did a very good job.

We use it to filter through 112.066 game assets (at the time of updating this review, 16th June 2022):
* graphic files (.png .jpg .psd .ico) - mostly sprites, backgrounds, and GUI elements we use in game dev, screenshots for marketing, icons for websites, etc.
* document files - game design documents, spreadsheets, pdfs with books we often check to apply certain algorithms, licenses, etc.
* audio files - game music, sound effects, meeting voice recordings, etc.
* video files - game trailers, marketing materials, bug reports, etc.
* fonts
* 3D objects
* memes (😁 for marketing purposes of course 😅)

We are very happy about the amount of filters we can apply. We can filter by color and by a lot of tags, shape, rating, type of file, date imported, dimensions, duration, note, URL.
This way we can filter for a specific graphic file or spritesheet we need, for example one which is pixel art, 8 bit, predominantly green, with the width max 256px because we need an 8 frame animation. Also we want that object to not have been used in any other projects we have, so we apply that filter too.
We want to credit the artist if it's not ours, and we can assign the link to them in the URL or note section of the file.
It's really amazing and once you organize your workflow to use Eagle, all these features come at the click of a button.
A huge plus is the fact that it works both on Windows and Mac. We host it on an external SSD (exFat) to hotswap between workstations, it works REALLY well. One thing to do for that is to allocate the minimum amount of size for the file cluster, since Eagle has a lot of very small files for metadata.

Now with Eagle 3.0 our performance issues seem to have been fixed, so we can easily scroll through our huge library. Unsure if a youtube video would be allowed here, but one can search for "112 000 gamedev assets tested with Eagle 3.0"

There's still an issue with support asking for the whole error log when we encounter a bug (we try to send just the error part but sometimes it doesn't help them). The logs do makes sense, however the program's log shows the full path and name of files, OS user name and more stuff which in our view is a big privacy problem, this is started on their privacy page. We look forward to them removing these names? Not sure what good it's for. From our experience working with a financial institution all the data sent to 3rd parties was trimmed so no personal info was passed along.
I shouldn't complain much about this though because most of the bugs we encountered got fixed.

The support is really good too, they answer very fast.

TLDR:
* we're a game studio
* we have 112.066 files we sort through (game assets, marketing materials, documents)
* it works great both on Windows and Mac at the time of writing this review for version 3.0 build 5
* if you contact support they ask for the program's logs which has path names and file names in clear text = privacy issues (even though their privacy policy states this)
* we use it every day, and we're happy about it
* I will update this review if anything changes (or hope to remember to do so 🙂)

I am very satisfied with Eagle

I am very satisfied with Eagle. The program is very convenient and allows me to save a lot of time. In Eagle, you can save various files: photos, screenshots, videos, audio, fonts, links, and more. The search function is well implemented. You can search by color, name, extension, tag, file format, etc. Eagle also has a browser extension. It allows you to easily add files to the program with a single click or drag and drop. The program is intuitive, and the interface can be customized. I don't know what I would do without Eagle. I advise everyone to try!

Best Digital Asset Management Software for Windows & MacOS

I am incredibly thankful that I was able to find Eagle, while I was searching for a tagging software for Windows. I just wish I found it even earlier as that would have saved me a lot of time in the past for sure.

Everything else I have tested so far is not even close to what this app has to offer. Adobe Bridge is great in terms of what it has to offer but really slow in comparison, which makes it pretty much unusable for me personally. The way the Eagle App is creating thumbnails when you import new files is just incredible. You won't believe how fast it is.

I have imported over 100.000 files into my Eagle library with many different file types and Eagle is able to view and play them directly inside of the app for the most part:
- JPG, PNG, DNG, PSD
- MP4, MOV
- PDF, TXT, HTML
- MP3, WAV
As far as I can tell, support for new file types is continuously being worked on, which makes this not only a great Digital Asset Management tool, but also a media player with some neat little features like slower and faster playback, which is really helpful for things like time lapses or slow motion videos.

When it comes to search speed, I can search through over 100.000 files and find my results in just seconds. When you import files into Eagle, these are automatically indexed with different metadata, which allows you to quickly search for a specific:
- Color
- Shape (Horizontal, Square, Landscape, Panorama)
- Dimension (Width & Height)
- Size (KB or MB)
- Import or Modification Date
- Duration
- File Type
... and a lot more. All of this is being indexed automatically for you.

On top of that, you can always use tags. You can create different tag groups for things like people, country, genre, mood, etc. and add individual tags to your files to quickly find them throughout your entire library.
And the best part about this is that you don't need to dig into any specific folders for this. You can just search for let's say photos of yourself in a specific country, where you were sitting at the beach for example.
At the moment, these tags are not being added to your files automatically, so you need to work on your tags by yourself. But I can only imagine what could be possible in the future with things like AI.
There are some neat little features for things like auto tagging though, which allows you to set up some tags for specific folders. If you add files to these folders, they will be tagged with the chosen tags automatically.

Eagle also has something called smart folders, which lets you save filter & search presets for you if you need to view files with specific tags or metadata regularly.

The app even has it's own capture tool, which replaces the Windows Snipping Tool and has some nice additional features like blurring, arrows, etc.

If all of that wasn't enough already, there's also a browser extension that allows you to save files into your library quickly with some very intuitive features.

I could really go on and on here and since I found out about Eagle I had to share this with as many of my friends and family members as possible as I think that everyone could benefit from what Eagle has to offer.

On top of all of that, I have also created a video that shows the best features of the Eagle App and gives some additional tips on how you could use the software and if you're interested in that, you can just search for my name + Eagle App on YouTube.

Thank you so much for this incredible piece of software... I absolutely love it!

Absolute best tool I've ever used & keeps getting better

Absolute best tool I've ever used for collecting inspiration. I have tried out dozens over the years and Eagle continues to surprise me with how reliable and intuitive it is. The main reasons I love Eagle:
• The ability to save ALL kinds of files (PDFs, videos, gifs, keynote files, you name it) in one place.
• Nice chrome plugin where you can easily drag and drop any image and have it saved automatically (or do a quick categorization)
• Smart folders that automatically group uploads together based on name, tag, color and more
• Ability to sync my folder to Google Drive so I can have it accessible on multiple devices
• Search by color
• Instant gif previews

Honestly I could do on for days. It really is a great product and I hope it continues to thrive because if they ever shut down I don't know what I will do.

I am *not* a UX/UI professional

I am *not* a UX/UI professional. I'm a writer. Maybe more importantly, I'm a father trying to manage a kid who is learning online because of COVID-19 lockdowns.

Any idea how many worksheets a grade-schooler gets? Pictures of artwork? It's overwhelming, and storing it all in Finder with comprehensible names is a nightmare. So I put it in Eagle.

Eagle holds:
- coloring pages
- pictures of my kid's artwork
- math and writing worksheets
- templates
- puzzles
- and anything my kids find cool and might wanna print out to cut and paste in crafts projects later

I also use it to plan projects at home, gathering inspiration for how I want to redesign the kitchen, kids' room, and bathrooms.

Templates, app icons, beautiful art I want to study more closely... you name it, it goes RIGHT into Eagle with a simple drag and drop thanks to their stellar extension.

Simple use-case, right? Yeah. But only because I don't have time to do more. There's so much in here to play with.
- Smart folders? check.
- Customizable Folder icons? Check.
- Customizable automation for organizing your assets? Check!
- Reverse image search with a right-mouse click? yup!
- metadata about the image, including space to rate, make notes, tag, add a source url, and view its colour palette? Yeah. It's got all that, too.

This app is one of those tools that has already thought of most of your needs and implemented them better than you could have imagined.

With one exception: mobile support. There is none. Yikes! So why didn't I dock the app one star for that? Well, the app never pretends to be mobile-anything. It's a desktop app so I'm reviewing it as one. As a desktop app it's 5-stars.

But, as of this time of writing (Jan 21, 2022), if you need a mobile solution, this ain't it. But I'm hopeful. And I have faith that this team will deliver.

Efficient way to Organize

I keep a lot of my references in different places and folders but this makes it a lot easier to store and organize! I also like that if you save pictures from the web, twitter or instagram, that you can keep track of the source! As an illustrator I like how easy it is to make mood boards or inspiration boards for planning! It has some really cool features and just easy to navigate! Super cool tool!
