I deleted my profile on Contra because customer support intervened during negotiations with their freelancers and engaged in systematic price gouging. They demanded $300 weekly for a single edited image that typically costs $100-150 total. The platform prevents direct negotiations between clients and freelancers, artificially inflating costs by 200-300% above standard market rates.

They also pressure clients to provide personal social media profiles and company email addresses, creating unnecessary privacy risks for business users.

These practices are exploitative and unsustainable for small businesses. Professional platforms like Upwork allow direct negotiations without corporate interference, maintain reasonable market pricing, and protect user privacy without invasive data collection requirements.

Contra's business model damages the creative economy by making basic services unaffordable while compromising client privacy through unnecessary personal data demands.

Contra has been a great experience for me so far. The Contra team is fantastic, the UI is clean, gigs are higher paying than other freelance platforms, and I can display my portfolio as a beautiful showcase of my work. I recommend it for both freelancers and business owners looking for top creative talent.

The Contra platform is a game-changer for freelancers. It puts us in control of each job—no buying “connects,” no hidden client feedback, no pay-to-boost gimmicks just to get noticed. If you’ve used the “other” platforms, you know how much they prioritize their profits over the people doing the work. Contra is different—it’s built with a true vision for independent creatives and the freedom we need to thrive.

I attempted to validate my freelance account while physically present in a fully supported region. Surprisingly, the platform rejected my verification process purely based on my passport origin, completely disregarding my actual geographical location.
This approach represents a blatant form of discriminatory practice, where an individual's eligibility is determined by birthplace rather than current residence. Such a policy strikes me as fundamentally unjust and undermines the core principles of equal opportunity. I sincerely hope the platform will reconsider its restrictive approach and instead evaluate users based on their genuine geographic presence and account activity, rather than arbitrary national classifications.

Customer support just ignores you when they dont know the answer. Asked them about their invoicing sysrtem because there are so many problems with it and they seem to be misleading the people on their platform and they just ignore me.

It's a waste of time and effort. Too much competition from people in third world countries who work at close to slave wages. Can't compete with that!

My experience - low amount of jobs, clients don't even answer any application. Also clients are too generic - "heart led brands" or "mission driven". Seems like a scam and a waste of money.

We have started a project on November 17th 2024 to develop a 3D modelling tools for Rhino Grasshopper. Total budget is USD $6,400, to be paid out 4 times. We had our deposit $1,600 paid out the same date.

Since then, the freelancer missed the deadlines & refused to reply message from Nov 2024 to Jan 2025; and finally went missing from Jan 2025. We messaged the freelancer for his response, and only once a month he replied for no update nor deliverable.

On March 1st, the freelancer requested project cancellation and we got cancelled on April 16th.

No update, no delivery, no refund.

We got in touch & asked for any actions they can make up. They provided $250 credit for future project, which is only a fraction of our deposit lost.

They replied our refund intention with:
"Unfortunately, since the project was completed and the independent already withdrew the funds, the money is no longer in Contra."

Well no, the project is not completed. The project is cancelled single-sided, without mutual agreement, by the freelancer.

Made a fool of us.

Can provide solid proof.

I started my full-time freelance career just over a year ago and I would have never been able to go full-time or find the success I did without Contra. It streamlines everything I need (payments, contracts, etc...) which was something that felt overwhelming when I started, knowing not much about running a business. Contra stands out as the only freelancer platform i've personally used that puts the freelancer's best interests in mind. Fiverr, Indeed, and Upwork all take an approach that I describe as a race to the bottom, rewarding contractors who devalue their work with the cheapest imaginable prices and rates (which makes Fiverr's company name so fitting- one point for honesty I guess). Contra on the other hand not only evaluates freelancers using their platform on merit, but they also seem to curate the opportunities that people are allowed to post on their site as well. Very rarely have I seen projects that are asking for the world while offering pennies and the few projects I have seen that have advertised false rates have been promptly removed from the listing. I can't think of a single negative thing to say about the platform. The Team is Grade A, responding usually in minutes to every single request I've had over the last two years of using Contra, and I can personally speak to their character, having directed a production a client testimonial project for them as a contractor they hired. All around, the freelancer platform world is in for a shakeup if they haven't realized it by now, and if you haven't guessed it by now, I think Contra ends up at the top of the heap.
