Reviewers overwhelmingly had a great experience with this company. Customers consistently praise the knowledgeable and encouraging staff, highlighting their patience and ability to make learning enjoyable. Many people appreciate the engaging lessons, well-paced curriculum, and the overall positive learning environment, noting significant progress in their children's coding skills and confidence. The platform is often described as solid and effective for learning. However, some customers also noted occasional issues with instructor availability, mentioning instances where instructors rushed off calls or refused to answer questions during class, making it difficult for students to catch up if they fell behind. A few people also felt that the content for elementary students, particularly block-based coding, could be learned through free online resources.

Student’s strength based Curriculum

Course material should emphazis on the coding concepts they are learning rather than just developing a game with few gimmicks.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback! Our comprehensive curriculum is designed to build a student's coding education from the ground up, by implementing fun and interactive projects that reinforce the material students are learning in class.

We hope to see your student in another class in the future!

Material is out of date and sloppy... but having a weekly class was helpful

TL;DR: The human interaction and weekly format make the overall experience an acceptable one, even though the actual material was far less than ideal.

Format/human interaction = 4.5 stars
Course material = 2 stars
Overall = 3 stars

Qualifier: I am a 25-year veteran of software engineering, specifically in web applications.

What I found helpful:
* The consistency of a weekly class for my child
* The presence of a real person on the other end of Zoom to be able to interact with students

What I did not find helpful:
* The HTML/JavaScript/CSS used was antiquated
* Modern JavaScript frameworks were never introduced; instead, the focus was on jQuery
* Modern JavaScript enhancements were never taught (e.g., "var" was used instead of "let" and "const")
* Classwork and Homework, in the form of Figma files or sample HTML sites, was poorly written, poorly designed, and often left at defaults (e.g., "Untitled" for the Figma file, HTML indentation and formatting was sloppy)
* When coursework was updated for one reason or another, references to the old files, old code, or old views were not (e.g., twice, I was puzzled going over
"wrong answer" with my child in a graded quiz because it asked her to refer to something that we later found out didn't exist, and was from the "old" lesson that was deprecated)
* Lessons and quiz questions sometimes used language that was not only poorly chosen but is also not industry-standard (e.g., "Which flex property is used to make things vertically centered?" was a question referring to horizontally-centered content, but both the lesson and the quiz incorrectly refer to the property)
* The IDE used for students was prone to bugs and allowed my child to upload materials to the wrong location many times (the interface doesn't default to the current, open lesson when uploading, so you must find it in a LONG list of lessons), displayed success/failure notifications outside of the dialog box and in hard-to-read colors (while this wouldn't normally be a big deal, it's a WEB DEVELOPMENT course, so chalking it up to irony isn't okay with me), and didn't have the modern trappings of hundreds of other online IDEs that would have made it more robust and useful

Overall, the coursework exposed my child to very amateur work, without eyes to current industry standards, best practices, or preparation for actual, paid employment. I found I was often saying things like, "Well, this isn't how anyone would do it in the real world, but..." before helping my child with many different aspects of the coursework.

Thank you so much for providing the time and important input into this review Frank. We truly appreciate the effort and thoughtfulness. We are understanding to your desire for how the curriculum should be built and approached. We do continuously make updates to our curriculum and will be considering this feedback among our many other considerations we take into account when deciding when and how to approach specific concepts and languages throughout our structured curriculum (ie. Age, Level, Experience, etc.). We do offer advanced placement testing as well as a private course format for students who would rather a more individualized coding education plan. As your student continues their future courses, please feel free to provide your feedback to our customer service team we would be glad to work with you on any further input you may have.

Great concept for a coding school....

Great concept for a coding school. Good for beginner learners if you don't have experience or understand quality online learning platforms. We used them for 3-4 years. Over the years we have had our fair experiences of the faulty platform here and there and the shortcomings in customer service. We have chosen to move on from CodeWizardsHQ. There are better options out there that focus on the quality of their learning platform, customer service, and quality teachers. I have two kids who used their services over the years, they provide neat progress reports after each class, however, my child, and friends' kids we have referred over the past years did not find their program and platform to be user-friendly, and intuitive, sometimes just not functioning. My personal experiences were with the parent portal where it won't allow me to sign up for summer camps directly without having to exchange several emails -- their parent portal also failed when we paused/canceled auto-enrollment. When the school reached to cancel a class - they couldn't tell me which class and which student without an exchange of emails -- wasting my time away. I am just tired of having to pay for that kind of service.

class can be slow

my son likes the instructor and the content, but with all the other kids that need more help, it hinders his learning experience because they can't get as far in the lesson. so he is sitting and waiting.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. We understand that there may be times where other students may need additional support, but we believe that peer to peer learning with the guidance of the instructor is quite valuable. In order for effective learning to happen, we have designed a specific class flow of relationship building, review, teach, and demonstrate, as it helps students solidify and practice concepts.

We highly encourage your student to take part in class discussion and debugging when these situations occur, as it is a great way to exercise their coding education as well!

Full accountability provides true learning

The fact that after each class there is a required quiz + homework that is graded provides accountability. In order to move on to the next section (after 12 weeks), the student is required to have a grade > 80%. This accountability makes the CodeWizards HQ truly unique.

Great coding programs for kids

CodeWizards programs for kids are very well organized and paced. They give hands on learning and slowly build on small concepts every class. The kids feel accomplished that they understand and can master a topic by the end of the class. The instructors are patient, knowledgeable and know how to keep kids engaged. Having recording of classes is helpful for when your child cannot make it to a synchronous class. Homework help hour is very helpful, so the kids can ask questions and not get stuck. Overall a great program.

Flexibility would be a plus

All is good. The instruction is impressive. I have noticed in my son however, a one-way mentality. This worries me in the computer programming field where collaboration should be encouraged and options welcome. Right now, my son is always thinking the way he believes a particular instructor wants him to think. I don't like that. I would prefer that more flexibility be built-in and that instructors introduce a menu of options. This would go a long way towards preventing the mental block and anxiety from believing that there is only one way. It infringes and incapacitates a child's problem solving ability. Otherwise, thank you and we will see you next summer.

Hi there,

We sincerely appreciate your feedback! We are pleased to hear that our structured curriculum, team of awesome instructors, and our Student Support Services delivered such a positive experience for you student. However, we do fully understand your desire for your student to expand their coding knowledge in way that welcomes various options on how to produce the same results.

Our curriculum developers feel confident that this more sophisticated approach to coding will surely develop as students move past introductory courses and deeper into our curriculum.
