Awful customer service in Harlow Choice

What an unpleasant experience I had at the Choice store in Harlow on 18th July 2025, around 3:15 PM.

While browsing the store, I picked up a pair of black jeans which were clearly marked with a sale sticker showing a price of £3.50. However, when I went to pay at the counter, the item scanned at £7.50. The staff member brought to my attention that its scanning the full price , I was told that the lower price was an error and I would have to pay the full £7.50 instead.

I pointed out that the item was clearly marked with a discounted price, and not just one pair — multiple items of the same kind were similarly priced, which suggests it wasn’t a one-off sticker mistake. I requested to speak to the manager, hoping the matter could be resolved fairly.

Unfortunately, the manager was dismissive, simply stating that it was a human error and refused to honour the price shown on the label. There was no effort made to resolve the issue or to acknowledge the impact of this situation on my shopping experience. As a result, I decided not to proceed with any of my intended purchases and left the store disappointed.

As a regular customer, I found the handling of this situation to be highly unsatisfactory and not reflective of the level of service expected.

Regarding Consumer Rights:

Under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, retailers must not mislead consumers with incorrect or deceptive pricing. While stores are not legally obliged to sell items at the marked price if it’s a genuine pricing error, they must not engage in practices that mislead consumers or are considered unfair — especially if the error appears to be widespread, as in this case. Furthermore, good customer service would involve addressing such concerns respectfully and professionally, which was not demonstrated.

Working at Choice was appalling…

Working at Choice was an appalling experience. I worked there for only two days before realizing their complete disregard for employees' needs, especially those with disabilities. I suffer from a chronic pain illness that affects all my muscles, and they outright refused to provide any reasonable adjustments like a chair or stool. Their argument was that no one gets one and it reduces productivity.

During the interview and the tour, I was not informed that standing for eight hours straight without a chair would be a requirement. When I suggested bringing my own chair, they dismissed the idea and told me to either take the job as it is or leave. My appeal to the manager, citing health and safety regulations and equality laws, fell on deaf ears.

This company clearly has no regard for staff well-being or disability accommodations. Shockingly, I witnessed another employee with a slipped disk being denied a chair as well. Despite some workstations having stools, the management's strict enforcement and surveillance policies made it impossible to use them. Overall, Choice's discriminatory practices and hostile work environment make it an unsuitable place for anyone seeking fair treatment and support.

I wouldn’t recommend working at Choice…

I wouldn’t recommend working at Choice Discount stores in Slough. Judging by my experience, the manager is so rude, he has no respect for his colleagues. He puts on a fake nice attitude to customers ,but does not show respect to colleagues. The manager in Slough will humiliate you in-front of your colleagues by calling you names such as call you a liar because he assumes that you did not do something when he has no evidence that you didn’t do what he asked you to do.This happened to me. He will basically verbally abuse you on the shop floor. It’s a regret of mine working there and a big waste of my time. Honestly, save yourself the trouble. The manager does not even respect how you work even though you tell him that you’re trying your best. The contract is not accurate on the amount of hours you work either. I also felt discriminated working there. Also does not respect the fact that you cannot do overtime. He will ask you why you cannot do overtime when you truly don’t have to answer that question because it’s none of the managers business why you can’t do overtime in reality. I understand that the store is short staffed, but I did mention that I am not flexible in the interview, I vaguely remember that I told him I can only do emergency shifts, but every single week he was asking me to do overtime, isn’t that ridiculous? I did mention that I have other responsibilities in my life, but he didn’t care.If you constantly agree to overtime, they will not stop asking unfortunately, just say no and don’t care what they think. I do not recommend Choice Discount Store Slough

I enjoyed my 4 years working there

I enjoyed my 4 years working there, but unfortunately my phone got hacked into and a message was sent to another member of staff, hr was called in and u was guilty before my manager rang me to say that I was working at the time of the message, but I chose to not return to work just in case had a bad reception, later the day the boyfriend of the person contacted me, tried to give me a mouthful which fell on deaf ears, I am now looking at a court appearance, but thankfully I have got a voice mail message to say I was innocent, I got along with most people ,

Really awful customer service from the Harlow store.

Really awful customer service from the Harlow store. Bought a jumper from there on Sunday and they dont have any dressing rooms to try things on so asked if I could change it if it was too big. Went back a few days later to swap for a smaller size and was charged an extra £2.50 as apparently it has gone up in price in the space of 3 days.

I pointed out that I had the receipt which stated nothing about paying extra when changing size and that it was the same item but he insisted I had to pay. Needless to say I won't be shopping there again and will be avoiding Next too as they are the parent company. A shame as I like their clothes but not willing to pay for that kind of service.

Awful customer service at the Basildon…

Awful customer service at the Basildon store.
My partner and I were advised that we could return an item and get our money back if it didn't fit within 28 days. So we popped into the shop next door, it was tried on and decided it wasn't suitable so we went straight back to get our money back to which we were told we could only have a credit note. We do not want a credit note we want the money but we were flatly refused and told that we would have been told this when we purchased the item. This was not the case. We 100% were not told that. We were told we could have our money back.
Seriously not happy!!!
