I am a native English speaker living in…
I am a native English speaker living in Germany and I would not have been able to reach C2 level German within 4 years (just passed the Goethe exam) without the help of Chatterbug.
The 1:1 tuition got me speaking quickly with natives, even though I did not always use German in my everyday life. Having tried other options such as group classes, I found Chatterbug to be the most efficient way to learn as a working professional with a busy schedule, with the flexibility of booking classes at any time, day or night.
In addition, the lesson topics are always fun & engaging and it is great to meet the diverse tutors, based all over the world.
I would highly recommend Chatterbug to anyone who needs to improve their language skills!
Recommend
So of course what you really want to achieve with your language learning (enough to get by, enough to order a coffee, maybe to be able to discuss in detail any subject, understand everything you hear, express yourself spontaneously and fluently in any situation and read anything with ease...) will dictate heavily how you chose to go about it. That being said, I have been learning German off and on for a very long time. The bottom line is, the best app, much like exercise equipment, is the one you actually USE! I am one of those learners that needs to use multiple resources which cover the material in different ways. This does NOT come to me easily. I have seen most of the programs, books, apps, used most of them, follow most of them, all the biggees and lots of the newbies off an on for years. Podcasts, Instagram posts, Facebook groups, Daily Emails, while all can be extremely helpful and reinforce throughout each day, every day, what is being learned and help build active and passive vocabulary, none of those alone will do the trick. Even if you are a Polyglot, you will still be using lots of resources. If you are not working on Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing consistently, then it will take a long time to have even a passing amount of fluency because all of those activities combined really supercharge the learning process. Otherwise you'll probably just learn enough to keep you out of trouble. As to actual apps, I have found a few to be really helpful in creating that basis upon which to build a proper foundation without skipping and reinforcing everything along the way. The apps that I use DAILY include Chatterbug (top of the list), HerrProfessor, Memrise, Readlang, VHS Lern-Portal (Free! and mirrors the Goethe and Telc exam structure), Nachrichtleicht and of course follow a lot of IG and Youtube teachers with Dein_Sprachcoach at the top of the list for quick thematic daily "German" exposure...Again the best app(s) are the ones you actually, deliberately use. My "little" melting pot of German language materials is working for me. Best of luck to all on your journeys!
Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! Julia is in the wrong line of work!
So! Beware their customer service is terrible. I hadn't logged into ChatterBug for a couple of months. I had a 20Euro subscription plan for 1 1:1 speaking lesson per month. I got busy and wasn't keeping up with my speaking, however, I just assumed they were still charging me and I wasn't that worried about it because you get a 1 month to use your monthly credit. Then I got a message that said your account is suspended. Great! no problem...I figured it was them doing me a solid because I haven't been able to log in and I lost 1 speaking session. Then, the next day, I get a charge. So, I log in to see what's going on. It says your account is suspended due to non payment. Well! This is the first I've heard on a non payment. No email, no heads up whatsoever. In comes Julia. Julia doesn't answer my inquiries trying to figure out what is going on for 2 days because they have THREATENED me that they are going to smear my credit. Fine, so we talk and she says some long winded blah, blah, blah. So, I ask for brass tax, "Do I owe you money? Yes or No?"
Julia then says...not even joking, "As I told you, No. And I would appreciate a friendlier tone. You have no reason to talk to me like that."
EXCUSE ME?! Like what? When was asking a direct question considered unfriendly? In what world and on what planet does Julia live on where she is the customer service agent and I am the customer but I need to couch a direct question with cushions, flowers, and honey to make HER happy??? Anyway, this left such a bad taste in my mouth that I would NEVER recommend this company. The customer service is out of their minds and not really doing their job. I will tell ANYONE who will listen this story because it is so bananas...I have NEVER had anything like that happen to me. I seriously I hope I never again. Have a good day!

I’m a language educator with years of experience and wanted to test this app out. It’s clunky, there’s no real structure to the curriculum and when trying to cancel after the free week trial I was given the run around. Please stay away from this app.

Chatterburg is for sure the best…
Chatterburg is for sure the best platform to learn a language online. I started at the A2 level of German and in about a year I was able to pass the B1 level. The teachers are very dedicated and the classes are very dynamic.
The technical support is not available
The technical support is not available. To mich technical issues from the provider. The most lessons starting 5-10 minutes later because of technical
Issues. Also chatterbug stop the lessons during the exercise with me as the student, during my tutor explain me something. I am really disappointed.

Easy German with Chatterbug
After trying to learn German on my own and in 2 different language schools in Berlin, I finally started studying with Chatterbug. Although I had reached A2 with my classes, I really felt like a complete beginner outside of class!
With Chatterbug I improved my speaking skill but also my confidence. The Live Lessons are just amazing! The tutors are extremely patient and comprehensive and supportive.
Now, although my German isn't perfect yet, I no longer dread going to the doctor or to an administrative meeting. I know I'll manage ;)
With Chatterbug you speak from day one
With Chatterbug you speak from day one! I feel comfortable speaking to my tutors in the target language because we have enough to talk about! If we're not currently doing an exercise, we'll be talking about things that interest us both, all in French! Every tutor is different and offers you something unique. Learning French with Chatterbug doesn't feel like learning at all, it feel like chatting with a friend :)
Fun and easy!
I've learned French from scratch using Chatterbug. After 3 months (3-4 lessons per week), I was conversational at a basic level and I felt comfortable talking entirely in French with my tutor, we actually are now friends! Chatterbug just made that possible because the exercises during our Live Lessons were perfect to practice and get to know each other. I didn't use the self-study that much, I really don't like flashcards. Give the Live Lessons a try, even if they are scary, they are the best Chatterbug has to offer!
Convenient and effective
I have been using Chatterbug for five months now and I am enjoying it and feel that I have been making some real progress. Much thanks to the tutors I meet in the live lessons, they are always so friendly and encouraging! I think the format of having excersises to work on together with the tutor in the live lesson takes away the potential awkwardness of being in a video conference with someone you don't know. Besides the excersises are varied and are not becoming boring after a couple of months. There is always something new.
Another feature that I really like is that after watching a video you get the option to write a short piece about what you saw. You can then chose to have this corrected by a tutor. Normally I am getting my writing back corrected in less than an hour, they are so quick! There are also reading excersises and flash cards for you to study on your own.
Long story short: I am a fan and strongly recommend it!
Best way to learn a language
I found Chatterbug after a pretty vast experience with different apps, courses and language schools. I can say that for me, it was the best way to learn German. After you set the target you want to achieve, the program shows you a clear pathway to your target. I think that the combination between self study and the live lessons made it so efficient. Not to ignore the fun part! Good work guys!
A Comprehensive Language Learning Tool!
I've been using Chatterbug for well over a year now and its helped me speak German to a level that I thought I was impossible! The live lessons are a great way to practice with a native speaker and the study activities really help you learn the grammar and vocab. It's a great tool!
chatterbug is one of the best ways to…
chatterbug is one of the best ways to learn a foreign language, especially for those who cannot regularly attend a course. Self-studies combined with live lessons make learning easy. I was positively impressed. the only criticism was the level test at the beginning. otherwise an effective method for language learning. I would recommend it to everyone.
I love learning French with Chatterbug
I love learning French with Chatterbug. The mix of self-study and live teaching is great. The self-study part is easy to navigate and has a lot of different content in the form of vocabulary/video/reading and writing exercises. The live lessons are really fun and really helped me improve my conversational skills a lot. The teachers are super nice and helpful, as are the people at Chatterbug. I can really recommend it.
It is a nice app/web-site
It is a nice app/web-site. It has everything you need to learn a language. That being said it is not for everyone. First of all, the placement test seems to be rigged and assigns you at a level that is obviously below your actual familiarity with the language. The exercises are usually good. Each day you get access to another text that you can read and translate. Additionally, you are able to write a 6-sentence long text similar to the reading material. However, the website offers no way to evaluate what you have written. Then there are the drills of repetitive words and phrases learning. A word appears in your target language and you need to write the translation. It is mind-boggling and bothersome. Completely inventive, but then again all of the apps have it.
What I loved were the live-sessions with an amazing selection of tutors. Grad students, the elderly and so forth who are working on the platform in order to offer services to avid learns. I quickly developed a liking for specific tutors and kept scheduling them whenever it was possible. I never had a bad experience. They all seemed genuinely interested and knowledgable.
I think most of the activities are fun
I think most of the activities are fun. The variety of self-learning sources is quite large
Good website for learning languages
I've been using Chatterbug on and off for around a year now for Spanish. It's a fun and easy way to learn new vocabulary and grammar. I haven't taken any live classes yet but as there are set topics for each of them, this should reduce any awkwardness in communication. There are still some issues with Chatterbug, with some mistakes being present and missing translations. Nevertheless this is a useful tool for learning a new language.
good platform to learn a language
I just strated using it but with amount of time i have and flexibilty this project provides it is an excellent platform to learn a Language.
you also get imediate help with levels, if computer can not put you at your desire level(Talk to Help center or your tutor).
for now this is what i can say, may be after sometime i can edit or review again.
Helped me a lot
Really great service, easy to use and helped me improve my German a lot by speaking to different native speakers.
One of the rare companies that are really concerned about client satisfaction. Every question or problem I had was promptly answered and solved in the best way possible by their chat support.
Not good
Honestly I didn't fully experience the app, however I can say that the level test wasn't accurate. There could be so many correct answers, and this app only gave one, as if the rest of the answers were wrong. In my opinion, not a good app if you want to improve your understanding of a language.
