Great bike with Sturmey Archer hub gears!

I'm very pleased with my Chappelli bike because it seems to be the only bicycle around that comes with 3 speed STURMEY ARCHER hub gears. (I've always been a Sturmey Archer fan).... AND...the bike came with mudguards which I consider to be extremely important !!
I had the bicycle assembled by a friend because I'm not very good at that sort of thing, but he told me that putting it together was relatively easy, despite the fact there were no assembly instructions in the box, and he didn't even look at the online assembly video!

Vintage Three speed bike LOVE

I ordered the Vintage Three speed bike (Jensen metallic dark green) on a Monday and it arrived by the Friday.

Took me about an hour to assembled it, the video was useful and very helpful.

It then took me a couple of hours admiring it in my living room. I think I'm in love 😍

Top bike
Top service
Top video on how to assemble
Top customer service, very friendly and responsive.

Could track the delivery, which was quick and reliable.

The three Speed Hub with Thumb Shifter is great and hardly recognisable, so gives it the clean look.

Great to ride, smooth and strong made bike.

Definitely worth the investment for a quality bike and vintage look, then the other cheap bikes going around.

Dodgy return policy

Watch out for returns!! I changed my mind while the bike was in transit and it costs $189 in shipping. There’s some small text in their free 10 day return policy. Here’s the email from Marc:

Thanks for your reply. Sure no problem, we can arrange for a return for you. Under these circumstances however, the freight charges would have to be covered by yourself. Return freight with collection from a residential address would be approximately $130 plus the original charge of $59. As stated on our website, we subsidise freight charges to our customers as shipping bikes in larges boxes around Australia is quite expensive - and reverse logistics are even more i’m afraid.

Hi Huw
It’s unfortunate this situation has come to this as the absolute majority of our customers since 2009 are typically very satisfied with our bikes and our service. As you have aired your grievance in a public forum, it only seems reasonable that we explain the process of consumer laws and retail purchasing to you again in the same forum.

1. You purchased one of our bikes from our website, the bike is exactly as pictured and described on our website.

2. You then emailed us after purchase asking us to customise your bike and supply additional components, it seems you expected this free of charge. Our website clearly states we do not customise bikes, and we outlined this to you accordingly. We did offer you a work around solution with free freight for the additional components to try and help.

3. You then threw a tanty as we wouldn’t give you free components and customise your bike, which led you to want to cancel your order. Your new bike had already been despatched and was in transit between Perth and Melbourne and could not be stopped – also as stated on our website and explained to you.

4. Under Australian consumer laws a retailer is not obligated to provide a refund due to a customer changing their mind post purchase. Regardless however, we did still offer you a refund on the bike but, requested you cover freight costs incurred as the return of the bike is no fault of our own or the product. Your reference to our 10 Day Test Ride Guarantee policy is not applicable to your circumstances under our terms and conditions – which are viewable in three locations on our website including at checkout and were also explained to you.

5. Your communications with us were average at best, which hardly enthused as to want to help you out but, we tried anyway and in a timely manner - here’s an email from Huw:

"That being said I think you have successfully fucked me you dodgy cunt, Marc. Great work with the small print. I’d like to initiate the return. " - Huw Llewellyn

6. As we have not heard from you since recommending you contact Consumer Protection to have this explained to you, we hope you are now clear on the standard retail process and enjoying your new bike : )

All the best

Impressive single speed

Pros: great bike, well packed in box, quick and friendly support response to shipping enquiry
Cons: supplied multi-tool too soft to safely tighten all bike parts, instruction booklet could use better illustrations (sounds like videos are on the way)

New El Toro, 6 months later.

I bought my El Toro at the end of April, and have been riding it afew times a week for the last 6 months, so figured enough time has passed for me to give an honest and decent review on the bike.

It only took around a week for delivery, which I was stoked with, and the initial set up of the bike was relatively easy and straight forward. It took roughly 30 minutes to put it together, adjust brakes, and have it ready to ride.

From the get go, the bike has been a lot of fun to ride. Great commuter bike, and also has been great for longer weekend rides (40-50km).

There’s only been two or three little issues, which even then, are easily fixed and don’t detract from the bike.

The first issue I found was adjusting the bikes saddle. The way the seat post is held in the frame made it very hard to tighten/loosen the screw and adjust the height without some considerable force. The second time I adjusted the seat height, I accidentally ended up stripping the head of screw with the Allen key. But that being said, the problem may have just been me and poor execution haha.

Another thing I found was the hub was producing a subtle ticking noise that echoed through the frame with every few pedal rotations. Im not sure if this has something to do with it being a particular style of hub, and it’s just a unique characteristic of them, or if it just needs to be worn in. But over the last 6 months, it’s gotten quieter to me and I barely even notice it. Definitely not a deal breaker.

Also, the bell provided with the bike doesn’t fit the diameter of the handlebars. So I got a chuckle out of that. But again, that’s not an issue with the bike.

All in all, the bike is worth every dollar. It’s a super punchy ride, very responsive, and still manages to make me smile every time I take it out for a spin. The ride is comfortable, even when it’s for a longer trip than usual. Not to mention, the look and aesthetics of the bike are just plain cool.

So to sum it up, 5/5, would recommend. You’ve done well Chappelli.

Thanks for your great input Simon! Stoked to hear you're loving your El Toro. A new bike is like a new romance, there's a few little adjustments here and there, then fun times, adventures and love for miles. xo

Bike itself is a really good product and was fairly straight forward to put together. It rides really nicely and looks great.

I had a few issues with the instruction manual as it was worded really poorly and there were numerous spelling mistakes. Could pay to review that document and have it proof read.

The bike was delivered several days later than promised which wasn't a huge deal as I was in no rush but if a delivery date is stated then it should be honoured.

Thanks for your feedback Steven! We are in the process of making assembly videos, which is why we haven't updated the paper manual - the manual will be phased out once the videos are released next month. Glad you love your new ride!

Amazing fixie at a great price

Amazing fixie at a great price with even greater customer service!! My bike arrived with some minor damage to the headset cap. They were very swift in their replies to my emails and were very helpful in understanding of issues and providing resolutions all within 24hrs of receiving my new ride. I will be recommending Chappelli Cycles to anyone looking to purchase their first fixie and am so excited to take my new whip to the streets!

Cute bike

The bike is very cute but the pedal broke off on my first ride - so pay extra attention to which way they screw in is my advice :). Their customer service team very promptly helped book an appointment to get it repaired locally to me.

The courier wasn’t the best in delivering the package but that sits out of their control.

Accusatory Returns Policy

STOLE MY MONEY. Their returns policy is a joke! They sent me a bike that was damaged; whether in their factory or in transit, I don't know, but the frame had a major dent. They then accused me of doing it and withheld my full refund. The dent was there from the moment I unwrapped the bike from the protective foam. I had witnesses and photos but they still ignored all of my reasoning and after weeks of emailing they only sent me a partial refund. I'm really not the kind of person to write a bad review of something, normally I'll just cop it on the chin and move on but Chappelli have really upset me with their lack of empathy and accountability. I would not trust this brand whatsoever. If I could leave 0 stars, I would.

Hi Madeline. The damage to your bike occurred during or after assembly at your home ie: damage to RHS frame, RHS crank arm and RHS hand grip (typical of a stationary fall). This was confirmed by resulting undamaged packaging that would have been damaged in the event of transit damage. The hand grip damage could not have occurred at the factory as the bars are not fitted at the factory.

Your supplied photos of the damage were not taken at the time of discovery whilst the bike was still partially packaged, they were taken after the bike was fully unpackaged and fully assembled.

We encouraged you to seek affordable consumer mediation to help resolve the issue, you chose not to. Your email correspondence with our staff was accusational and threatening. Immediately after agreement from your self, we refunded $549 of your $649 purchase price and we also covered the cost of return shipping ($94). The $100 we retained for damages falls way short of the actual cost to us.

This type of damage is outside the terms of our returns policy and we feel our settlement with you was very reasonable. It is fair to say that a majority of businesses would not have refunded at all under these circumstances.

Love chappelli bikes. Good looking & high quality

We have had two chappelli bikes for 3 to 4 years. Very happy with the purchase. Their bikes are stylish and high quality. Also easy to maintain and do not age at all after a few years. Highly recommended.
