Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 130 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Reviewers frequently complained about receiving persistent demands and notices regarding account balances that they believed had already been settled or belonged to other accounts. Many people also struggled to reach customer support teams, often encountering extremely rude communication, automated dead ends, and entirely unhelpful responses when attempting to resolve their complex disputes. Some reviewers were happy with the assistance they received from certain staff members during their interactions. Customers noted that specific representatives were understanding, polite, and genuinely helpful when organizing straightforward payment plans for those facing financial difficulties.

Aggressive, predatory, and harassing people in Protected Trust Deeds

I was subjected to an incredibly aggressive, hostile phone call from a BW Legal agent demanding immediate direct payment for an alleged private parking debt from 2022.
Let it be known clearly: I am in a legally binding Scottish Protected Trust Deed from 2022. Under Section 171 of the Bankruptcy (Scotland) Act 2016, creditors are strictly and legally barred from taking any direct collection or enforcement action against a debtor for debts bound by the insolvency.
During the phone call, your agent claimed she searched the insolvency records and couldn't find me, using this incompetent lie as an excuse to continue her aggressive harassment. If your agents cannot properly navigate the Register of Insolvencies (ROI) in Scotland, that is a severe compliance and training failure on your part, not a loophole to bully people. My Protected Trust Deed is fully active and legal.
Your agent also tried to use high-pressure tactics, claiming that because BW Legal "bought or took on" the debt in April 2026, the rules don't apply. This is completely false. Buying a debt does not reset its origin date. You bought a pre-existing 2022 debt that is legally frozen and bound by my Trust Deed
The second I took to their live chat and forced them to face the exact Scottish legislation they were breaching, they immediately backed down, admitted defeat, and stated the matter was closed and returned to their client.
Absolute amateurs. You engage in predatory, hostile behavior until a consumer calls out your legal breaches, at which point you run scared and dump the account. Disgraceful company. Do not contact me again.

Spam caller

Descended into speculative robo-calls & spam under the guise of an unspecified legal issue. Lowest of the low.

No moderately professional legal firm makes contact for the first time, unprompted, over the phone.

If you are being contacted by this firm, do not assume the debt is valid

If you are being contacted by this firm:

BW Legal pursued me for a debt on behalf of a major energy company despite that company having already admitted in writing that the billing was wrong.

They obtained a County Court Judgment against me. I challenged it in court, the judgment was set aside in full, the claim was dismissed entirely, and costs were awarded against them. An independent regulator also ruled the debt collection activity against me was unreasonable and inappropriate. Every single avenue I pursued vindicated me completely. BW Legal continued pursuing a debt they had no right to pursue, against someone who owed nothing.

If you are being contacted by this firm, do not assume the debt is valid. Challenge everything!!!

I over payed by £140 and in February and was contacted to let me know of this. I’ve given my bank account details twice and jumped through all their hoops. It is now May and they are still not repaying me what I am owed (the irony). I asked to open a complaint and was point bland told that I couldn’t. Please just give me my money back and leave my life forever.

She is master piece of ruining your life for landlords and completely a nightmare to appoint them.

Continuously harassing for debt that is for a different address (although sent to mine every toe for some reason- when you read the letter it’s for completely different address).

Bullies, cannot write letters, absolutely disgrace of a company. Won’t be escalating my complaint to complaint department

They claim to be solicitors

They claim to be solicitors , but clearly don’t know the law! , we are currently in deadlock with BG, they are fully aware but continue to chase payment, and have now issued a Letter of claim, whilst it’s still being reviewed by the ombudsman!

“Pursuit of legal action or continued debt collection activity whilst a dispute is actively subject to Ombudsman review is contrary to Ofgem’s complaint handling standards and the Energy Ombudsman scheme rules”

To call this firm scum would be an insult to scum. I didn't know it was legal to go to an address i dont live at several times much to chagrin of my neighbours, then texting, calling, emailing, harassing. I get that they are a debt collection company which is probably not the dream job of their staff but this is a new low in terms of tactics and treating people with some basic level of respect. Any company that is contracting with them, along with their staff, should be ashamed of themselves in my opinion.

Absolutely awful company to deal with

Absolutely awful company to deal with , husband received a text on his phone demanding a payment for a debt from Scottish power which had been then passed on to another debt collector who bw legal are acting for . My husband phoned them up and it was a debt that had started the day after we moved out on February 2023 of our rental house to the date it was sold in June 2024 after the landlord got his house repossessed hence why we moved. Sent them our tenancy agreement, not good enough, then sent final bills of Scottish power still not good enough . Have told them it’s on them to proof we lived there during them dates still harassing us. Will be getting the FOS involved if this continues

Avoid these criminals

BW Legal pursuing a car parking charge which I have stated has been incorrectly given. They stated on the phone that they will pursue letters and “the debt” even though I am disputing it.

I have made BW Legal aware, specifically addressed to Sean Barton and Rachael Withers that further correspondence will be handed to the police as harassment demonstrating a Course of Conduct.

I would suggest people read my review and decide not to engage with BW Legal as they are harassing and a horrible company with only one motive. They will keep pursuing something which will never win in a county court. It definitely feels like harassment.

BW Legal only want money

BW Legal tried some time ago to charge me a British Gas bill from the previous tenant of my rented house. I spoke on the phone with them, I uploaded email from British Gas saying I am not the client to be charged as I have a different account from the one they are trying to charge. Also I uploaded my Tenancy Agreement where I prove my ID and the date I start the Tenancy which is after this bill. On the phone the BW Legal staff said it was ok the documentation. Some months after they asked me my Tenancy Agreement and I replied for them to look in their files as I had uploaded already the document they were requesting. Today they emailed me saying they don't have enough proof that I am not the person to be charged. I want BW Legal to be organised enough to check the docs I have uploaded and I do want them to apologizes for bother me.

Shocking experience

Shocking experience. We have been chased for months now, first my husband and now me for a British Gas bill to a property we do not own or have anything to with.
Chat is a Waste of time as they just fob you off. They tell you that they will put your case on hold but then send another letter demanding money. Letters keep asking for different amounts and different British Gas accounts are stated in their letters.
I am not sure why they are still allowed to operate.
