Thank you Heather and Behavet!

I had my first appointment with Behavet’s Dr Heather because I need help with Bailey, my superactive Cockapoo. Behavet tracked town all his veterinary records going back to his puppyhood.

Heather had gone through these as well as the detailed assessment form I completed for Behavet.

She went through these, and supplementary questions, on our first consultation and her insights were incredibly helpful.

I came away with a huge sense of relief and confidence that I can at last help Bailey find the peace and gain the confidence he needs, and deserves.

I’ve already recommended Heather and Behavet to my very close friends and I look forward to receiving the follow up recording of the meeting as well as the notes and training videos Heather promised.

We came to Behavet already in crisis…

We came to Behavet already in crisis with our young dog after months of severe behavioural difficulties and concerns around safety and bite risk. Behavioural euthanasia had already been raised to us before starting, so we made it very clear how serious the situation was and how emotionally burnt out we already were given my complex health conditions.

Over the following months we followed the advice provided consistently even though we had already been doing most of what was suggested and completely reshaped our lives around management recommendations, containment, trigger avoidance and “bucket emptying.” We’ve avoided people, environments and normal daily experiences almost entirely in the hope this would help him decompress and improve like told. Unfortunately, despite the huge emotional, physical and financial investment, our puppies behaviour progressively worsened rather than improved.

Now after months of being with Behavet, our pups reactions have still escalated to a level we had never experienced before. He’s become increasingly fearful around people, unable to cope with unavoidable situations, more reactive to movement and noise inside the home, and began displaying more behaviours towards us on a daily basis. We ultimately experienced our first bite incident that drew blood. Most distressing of all, he has stopped being able to properly switch off or settle during the day and seems trapped in a constant state of stress and conflict despite advice.

We fully appreciate that he is a complex case involving both behavioural and pain-related components, and we understand there are never guaranteed outcomes in behaviour work. However, we do feel deeply disappointed by the overall lack of progression in approach over such a prolonged period of time, particularly given how severe our situation was made clear to be from the beginning. We just kept getting the same advice near enough every month all coming off video links.

We have repeatedly communicated concerns that he appeared to be deteriorating despite strict adherence to recommendations, and we personally felt stuck in indefinite management and avoidance without enough practical skill-building or meaningful improvement in day-to-day life. We also repeatedly raised concerns regarding medication due to him previously reacting badly to sedative-type medications and becoming more distressed and hyperaroused rather than calmer yet it’s been pushed on us every time including our most recent interaction with a senior clinician.

One of the most difficult parts of this experience was feeling unsupported during urgent periods of escalation. Behavet promotes that support is always available, however over the last few months when we reached out during crisis situations involving severe deterioration and now bite incidents, we often waited days for responses or our main clinician was unavailable. Given the level of risk and distress we had repeatedly communicated, this left us feeling extremely alone while trying to manage a dangerous and emotionally exhausting situation.

The impact this experience has had on our lives has been enormous. We spent near enough thousands of pounds through insurance claims pursuing behavioural support while simultaneously becoming more isolated, emotionally overwhelmed and fearful in our own home. My own health conditions are significantly affected by the stress of living in such a high-alert environment every day. We’re living around constant management and anticipation of reactions and he hasnt ever been given the opportunity to learn how to feel differently and is missing out on significant opportunities for confidence building and socialisation in his teenage stage.

We do not believe the clinicians lacked compassion, and we appreciate that they were dealing with a very difficult case. However, for us personally, the experience ultimately left us in a significantly worse emotional and practical position than when we first sought help. We are heartbroken by where things have ended up and cannot honestly say that the support we received improved either his quality of life or our own. Given the fact all of this is online too without any proper assessment of your dog or in person support I would save up and not return.

Reply from Behavet

Hi Tayla,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am truly sorry that your time with Behavet did not bring the outcome you were hoping for when you first came to us, and I can hear how much you and your family have been through.

I want you to know that we have not taken your feedback lightly. Our most senior clinician has personally reviewed your case in detail and has written to you directly on several occasions to respond to the concerns you have raised. It was important to us that this was given the careful attention it deserves, rather than a brief reply here.

I do not think it would be appropriate to address the detail of a long and complex case in a public forum, particularly one in which our team, as well as third party professionals, have been closely involved over many months and across a great deal of correspondence. What I can say is that cases of this kind, involving suspected pain, behavioural escalation, and safety concerns, are among the most challenging in our field. Progress in behaviour work depends not only on clinical input but on a sustained, collaborative partnership between clinician, client, and patient, and meaningful change is never guaranteed even where every party is doing their best. I am genuinely sorry that the support we provided did not deliver the change you and he needed.

Alongside the correspondence you have received from our senior clinician, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly. If you would be open to that, please contact hello@beha.vet and ask for me by name. There is no expectation attached to the invitation; I would simply value the chance to continue listening.

Many thanks,
Madeleine

Best Behavioural Team

My personal dog trainer Dr Bridget is incredible. I had my first consultation and it has already been very informative and helpful. The trainer also works around your personal schedule making sure not to load to much at once and also does not expect everything to go perfect all at once. I highly recommend this Behavioural team!

Had our first consultation with Dr…

Had our first consultation with Dr Natalie and it was brilliant. The way she explained the reasons for Bailey's current behaviour made things fall into place and become clear and easier to understand. Dr Natalie reassured me that Bailey's behaviour is quite common for her age and can easily be worked on.

The service from Behavet has been fantastic and seamless from the moment I made an initial enquiry.

I'm looking forward to further consultations with Dr Natalie and feel confident that we can help Bailey with her separation anxiety and resource guarding.

Booked training for reactive dog

Booked train for reactive dog. They gave some information and 2 consultations, which cost more then £1000. Insurance covers it but is not worth it, better find real not online behaviorist as this will not help much and the cost are too much too! This is only for 2.5 houra online consultation and some videos sent to email.

Really personalized dog training

Really personalized dog training. I have two reactive italian greyhounds , anxious with other dogs and another anxious with people. Have worked with this company for 3 months on training our dogs to gain confidence in different situations and disassociation techniques as well as loose lead walking. Hugely successful, really supportive great communication. Both by zoom and by email. Great value for money , a company I highly recommend. We found them through another dog owner in our area whose dog progress was amazing to see. Other people are now complementing us on our dog's behavior. You are taught the psychology behind what you are doing and working with on your dog so that you can implement skills after you have done the training program you choose, and continue building on your dog's confidence throughout their lives.
It's given me and my husband much more confidence in walking our dogs and handling difficult situations. We are now really enjoying walking with our dogs instead of being tense alert and hypovigilant all the time. 10 yr old italian greyhound male neutered & 5 yr old italian greyhound neutered male.

A great first consultation with Dr Helen

A great first consultation with Dr Helen, so many things made sense when she explained them to me, and knowing her support is there if I need it before our next consultation, is brilliant.
I'm really looking forward to working with Romi on her behavioural issues and making the progress which Dr Helen says is achievable.
Thank you!

Voyage into the unknown

Dr Natalie was completely understanding…

Dr Natalie was completely understanding of the struggles my pet suffers each day. She explained what how and why reactivity is happening. A gentle plan to adjust trigger reactivity has been formulated and I look forward to seeing results. This will be a slow process, however, understanding the underlying symptoms, both visible and invisible, actually makes the process easier to understand so that I can offer much needed comfort and reassurance to my fur baby.
