Aurora Expeditions is an Australian-owned adventure company specialising in small group expedition-style travel to polar regions and other wild and remote places. We offer travellers the chance to have an intimate experience in these regions with its small ships and flexible, innovative itineraries. With a history of pushing the boundaries of expedition travel, Aurora Expeditions is proud to have pioneered a number of activities such as scuba diving and climbing in Antarctica. The majority of voyages now offer adventure options such as mountain climbing, sea kayaking, photography and camping in various locations; while Aurora's expert naturalists, historians, staff and crew help to unlock the wonders of these special places.

Our Approach

Written by the company

Pioneering Expedition Travel to the Heart of Nature
From the start, Aurora Expeditions was destined to be different. Our passion for adventure, exploring wild places and sharing the experience with friends burns just as brightly as it did 28 years ago, as does our preference for small-group, personal expeditions. Each expedition is accompanied by an expedition team we believe are the world’s best. Remote area specialists, their onboard lectures entertain and expand your knowledge. Whether you’re joining us for the first time or returning for another thrilling adventure, our original goals remain unchanged. Explore wild places that stir the soul, offer personal attention on unforgettable expeditions and welcome new friends into the Aurora family.
Small Groups are Best
We believe that small groups are best. Unlike larger vessels, our smaller ice-strengthened ships allow us the flexibility to land when the best opportunities present themselves. In turn our passengers can experience nature at its very best; maximising time spent exploring ashore.
Expert Guides
Our highly acclaimed expedition specialists are some of the best in the business. Many are recognised world leaders in their fields and enthusiastically share their knowledge to ensure that each moment you spend with us is interesting and educational.
Flexibility and Freedom
We stop for breaching whales! Our itineraries are designed with flexibility in mind. If weather or sea ice block our way, we always have a Plan B, C and D! We're always on the look out for new places to explore and we're not afraid to adjust our schedule if we stumble upon an unexpected wildlife display.
Environmental sensitivity and enrichment
We helped develop international environmental guidelines for the polar regions we visit, and consciously limit the number of people we take to our destinations. The more our remote area specialists share their knowledge about the natural environments we encounter, the more rewarding your experience.
Our Spirit of Adventure
We were the pioneers of some previously unheard of activities such as polar diving, polar kayaking and camping on the ice in Antarctica. Photograph ice-tipped peaks in Patagonia, scuba dive or snorkel amidst glistening icebergs, sea kayak with whales or enjoy a feast of tundra berries. No matter where we are in the world, we encourage a true sense of exploration.
Our Experience
It's been more than 25 years since our co-founders, Greg and Margaret Mortimer, first started taking small groups of friends and keen travellers to Antarctica. Aboard small, ice-strengthened vessels, they took groups of intrepid explorers to places that few, if any, had been before, pioneering a long list of 'firsts' along the way.
Full Service Travel Agency
We operate an accredited travel agency offering friendly, one-on-one service and deep expertise. We plan comprehensive itineraries that complement our expedition to remote places, so no matter where you’d like to go, we can suggest the best things to see and do to make your expedition even better. So why not add a Patagonia Discovery Trek, take a self-driving tour around Iceland or add a stopover at the mysterious Easter Island?
Added Extras
Whether it’s a polar jacket and photo book to keep; flights for our Fly/Sail Antarctic program; pre/post voyage accommodation in South America; or high Arctic activities in Longyearbyen, our inclusions are what most others would consider extras.

Amazing - Complete North-West Passage

So many personal firsts achieved. Super smooth hi-tech X- bow expedition ship, talented, knowledgeable expedition team supported by a great captain and crew. Aurora expeditions, the people, fellow passengers, facilities plus Inuit perspectives exceeded my expectations on this 30 day small ship cruise. 30 plus stops, citizen science workshops , geological, ecological, climate change, historical, geo political, photographical & local community workshops all covered by personable and passionate subject experts. Our health and well-being was paramount along with ensuring that passengers engaged in a life changing experience. Some hardened travellers all sharing the same camaraderie of travelling, learning and learning from each other - thanks.

Traveling through maritime and geographic history: the Northwest Passage

This was Sylvia Earle’s (our ship) first complete crossing of the Northwest Passage and it was a wonder filled, 4-week expedition with diversity and new experiences. We have traveled a number of times with Aurora Expeditions (this was our 7th voyage) and this was perhaps a highlight of those voyages. Our expedition team was excellent wirh brilliant leadership.
We were traveling in the wake of Franklin and other explorers who over centuries tried to find a northern passage between the Atlantic to Pacific oceans. It was quite thrilling and their voyages were brought to life by two excellent historian lecturers. We were not only traveling through maritime and geographic history we were passing through the high Canadian Arctic Inuit Nunangat. That aspect of our experience was quite special as we visited communities and learnt a little about their cultures past and present as well as exploring archeological sites. As an added bonus for us, Aurora had invited on board two Inuit cultural representatives to travel with us. They brought new knowledge and a more authentic perspective to our experience. We learnt so much.
Something rather unique in our experience with expeditions is Aurora’s commitment to ethical, more environmentally-sustainable travel. Added to that was the option for us to engage in Citizen Science projects - a highlight for us and I came home seeing the world through different eyes.
I wholeheartedly recommend this expedition.

Another amazing expedition trip!

This was our 4th trip with Aurora. They are incredibly professional, offering unparalleled access to remote locations & activities (eg, kayaking in east Greenland). The expedition team was outstanding, working with the ship's captain to enable us to get to places that other ships were not. They prioritise getting you off the ship & out into nature. The new ships are fantastically comfortable. Even when some problems arose with a different cancelled voyage, they were incredibly helpful in refunding money, making alternate arrangements, etc. If only all companies were this professional & responsible, then the world would be a better place. We can't wait to travel with them again & highly recommend them for adventure travel.

Ice, Ice Baby (and polar bears, and belugas, and new friends, oh my!)

If you want an epic Arctic adventure you won't go wrong with Aurora Expeditions! My 24 year old daughter and I sailed on the Sylvia Earle on her maiden Arctic Voyage and it exceeded every expectation: the ship itself is brand spanking new, comfortable, and well appointed; the food is delicious; the staff at every level friendly and gracious; and the expedition team is world-class. And the scenery and wildlife!!!! OMG - from towering waterfalls in Iceland, to the mysterious Jan Mayen Island, to polar bears in the first 10 min of our first Svalbard zodiac cruise, to curious seals swimming around our kayaks (yes, sea kayaking is an option on some cruises!!) it was one jaw dropping experience after another. Sure, you can go with lots of operators and cross the Arctic Circle, but with Aurora you do it with the best people on the planet, and come home with not only thousands of incredible photos but with new friends.

Aurora Expeditions = top notch.

I have now travelled 3 times with Aurora Expeditions and the quality and consistency of service is consistently excellent.
Having just returned home from our Antarctica Complete trip after subsequent travels I can’t rate Aurora highly enough. The ship - Sylvia Earle was a small ship with all the bells and whistles. The casual atmosphere allowed everyone to be themselves and was a six star hotel on the high seas. The Expedition team were beyond fabulous-always around and nothing was ever too much trouble. So much knowledge and expertise to share and always with energy and enthusiasm.

Once in a lifetime experience

Aurora Expeditions provided a comprehensive, outstanding, tailored once-in-a-lifetime experience in Antarctica.
They could not have been more respectful, thoughtful, immersive and ecologically demonstrative whilst being inclusive and humorous throughout.
I could not recommend them more highly for what is a never to be forgotten experience.

Excellence of all crew in leadership and teamwork

The breathtaking beauty and ‘end of the earth’ feel of the place was matched by the elegance and practical design of the ship 'Greg Mortimer' for polar adventure. The crew were exceptional – from the expedition guides who shared their passion and knowledge to the people who attended to our every little comfort. The leadership and teamwork shown by all crew gave the impression of people who love their job and delight in giving passengers the trip of a lifetime.

Superb experience on board Sylvia Earle earlier this month. The boat was stunning but more importantly the expedition team were superb. Howard the expedition lead did a wonderful job planning and replanning the trip and made sure we got as much time on land as possible. I would highly recommend them!

Our once in a lifetime trip

This is our once in a lifetime expedition to explore Antartica, our 7th continent. Aurora Expeditions delivered in spade. From our amazing ship the Greg Mortimer which was build in 2019 and was un-used during COVID 19 until recently, it have the state of the art technology for our safety and comfort.

Our "Wild Antartica" had only 95 guests with 90+ staffs to take care of us, we were so pampered, from our food, our safety, our entertainment, to our adventures, everything was perfect.

If you like your adventure in luxury, this is the company.

Just to let you know, I got COVID from the ship. Maybe mask wearing should be mandatory.

Masks stopped being mandatory during the 22-23 Antarctic season in accordance with regulations and guidelines. However, we encourage passengers to wear masks, if they feel more comfortable. Health & Safety is a priority for us and continue to evolve our protocols inline with current regulations and guidelines to ensure that our passengers enjoy their expeditions to the fullest.

This was a truly memorable experience

This was a truly memorable experience. The Sylvia Earle is a beautiful ship and every aspect of the onboard experience was first class. From the time we boarded by zodiac to our disembarkation in Ushuaia the staff and crew could not have made us feel more welcome. The trips in the zodiacs and the landing experiences were also wonderful. We would recommend this to anyone considering an Antarctica experience.

What an Experience!

We sailed on the Sylvia Earle. I think it was their 6th voyage. We were on the fly over and sail back. It was a touch and go as to whether we were going to fly to meet our boat. As luck had it, we were able fly out late afternoon. We were thrilled that we were able to go on expeditions twice a day, food was great and the staff were exceptional. They drove the zodiacs, gave talks about Antartica and were the scouts on the landings, so we were able to see all the wildlife and fossils. The ship was nimble and could go through tight passages and the quarters were very comfortable. My husband is prone to motion sickness and other than sea bands, he participated in every activity the ship had to offer. Returning to Ushuaia, the dreaded Drake Passage was a lake. We were lucky!

Antarctica - My 7th Continent

Aurora Expeditions Trips are best curated where you can have adventurous and educational trips.

Trip experience depends on the expedition team and I would say that we had a great experience with our expedition team.

They took care of everything, from picking us up from the airport to the end of the trip, our food needs, our personal needs, and last but not least our safety needs.

Had a great experience even with the challenges of weather. Trip before us was cut short due to weather but ours made it out ok. Crew and staff were excellent, food was very good and room was very comfortable. I would definitely travel with them again. Felt like traveling with friends and we explored the Antarctic coast together. Went into places th crew had not visited yet so felt fresh and new.
