Dental Surgery Maze

I initially was referred to this Dental Surgeon from my General Dentist on 9/30/25; initial consultation to discuss a molar tooth extraction. I was advised that this Dental Surgery Group was out of network with my Dental Insurance and I was requested to pay my out-of-pocket portion of the consulting fee...$68.00 paid. I was also informed that the total procedure cost could range from $500 - $1,500 and that a 'Preauthorization' would need to be submitted to my Insurance Company prior to scheduling the tooth extraction procedure.

I heard back from Atlanta Oral Surgery on 11/18/25 and was advised that my Dental Insurance Company had pre-authorized my tooth extraction and that my total out-of-pocket portion would be either; $305/w anesthesia or $132 without anesthesia; I opted for surgery without anesthesia. Surgery was scheduled for 12/5/25 and was completed as planned; I paid my $132 portion and deemed the matter complete.

On February 12, 2026; I received and email and phone call from Atlanta Oral Surgery requesting additional payment of $295 for the previous services rendered. When I called to inquire, I was informed that even though a 'Preauthorization' was received from the Dental Insurance Company prior to the surgery, any outstanding balance is still my responsibility.

My issue with Atlanta Oral Surgery is as follows:

1. What was the purpose of a 2 month delay for a 'Preauthorization' that has limited accountability?
2. Why was I not provided a copy of the 'Preauthorization' as submitted to my Dental Insurance Company and only informed as to what my 'total out-of-pocket' expense would be for the surgery, only to find out 2 months later that I am now responsible for an additional $295?

Respectfully,

Alex E.
