Do not use this bunch. They are truly, truly terrible 2022
Last year, I discovered Ask calendars. They were just round the corner from where I live and when I rang they answered questions and were incredibly helpful. I printed a calendar through them, a small order, 20 copies for family and friends. They got the order ready when they said they would, they communicated well all the way through the process and at the end of it all I was able to saunter round the corner to their offices and pick up the calendars myself.
After such a great experience I didn't think twice this year. I went straight to the ask website and made a calendar using their design tool. Some of the images had bled off the page (intentional) but the ones that had bled off the bottom looked as if they were going to print on the page below.
I couldn't get the proof button to work but I wasn't too worried as the overflowing bits hadn't come out on the calendar I'd done for 2022 so I reckoned it was probably OK, and if not, I'd ordered a pdf proof anyway, so if there were any problems I assumed it would show on those and I could ask for help. I ordered the calendars on the pay later option and discovered that the ask print facility had moved to Alcester so I wouldn't be able to pick them up. Never mind.
A day after I'd uploaded my design, my proof arrived. Unfortunately, it looked as if the bottom halves of three of the pictures were, indeed, going to bleed onto the day-at-a-glance planner bit and print there on the finished version. Mea culpa.
However, two others which I'd positioned the same way were fine. I emailed Ask straight away explaining and also warning them that I'd ordered the calendars to arrive by 18th December, which was two weeks hence when I placed the order. I asked if they needed me to send them cropped photos replace the ones that were bleeding over into the planner bit. Then I waited.
I heard nothing and no alts appeared but hey, it was Friday. When Monday came, still no word or a second proof. I rang them and got an answering machine message saying they were very busy but to leave a message and they would call me back. I left a message. Tuesday, nothing. Wednesday I was out all day but had given them my mobile number. I heard nothing. If they needed cropped photos they would surely need them sooner rather than later if the calendars were going to be printed on time. I began to get worried.
It's now 8th and I'm still waiting ... Maybe I've been too hasty but they were so fast responding last year that I'm a bit flummoxed. The phone number is still their old one and I am worried the message is on a loop and there's no-one there anymore. I will have to pop round tomorrow and see if anyone is in.
Not sure what else to do now but I've emailed them explaining that I need the calendars by the end of next week and that if I don't hear by the end of tomorrow I'll assume they can't print them in time and go elsewhere. I've tried to contact them every which way, instragram, facebook, email and I've left another phone message. Hopefully I will hear something tomorrow but I'm kind of losing hope.
All in all, they were absolutely great last year, but this year the whole experience has been a bit lumpy and now they appear to be ghosting me.
Just ... weird, I guess I have to chalk it up to experience and make a note not to use them again but it's a shame. Maybe they are victims of their own success. It's just embarrassing that, after last year's experience, I've recommended them to so many people. Here's hoping that if anyone took up my recommendation, their experiences with Ask this year have differed from mine.
I've given Ask two stars, rather than one, on account of the excellent service I received from them last year. However, if you're printing calendars for 2023, I suspect Ask are best avoided until they've got their act together again ... unless you like being ghosted by a supplier.
Final note: I will update this if I get anywhere with Ask, or if they reply to any of the messages and emails I've sent.
UPDATE Yep, here it is.
I popped round to the Ask offices and found them deserted. I couldn't get into the building but eventually someone did let me in. There was nobody at reception. I tried to find someone who could tell me if any Ask staff were still visiting or collecting messages but nobody knew. I left wondering if the company had ceased trading somewhere between taking my order than then.
Someone from Ask finally contacted me on 16th December, explaining that they thought they'd sent me a proof and apologising for the delay. Did I still want the calendars, they asked me? No, I told them and explained that I'd seen the disused office and assumed they'd ceased trading.
Today, 11th January, out of the blue, DHL arrive with a box of calendars from Ask print, the order I cancelled. I will not be paying for them.
Downgraded to one star. Will not be touching Ask with a barge pole ever again.
