Con business

A few weeks ago, the Fisher and Paykel upright freezer stopped cooling properly. I thought it might be an electrical or mechanical fault. With my engineering background, I managed to isolate the fault to low refrigerant. I left the internal panels and covers removed and called Alpha Appliance Repairs to specifically send one of their technicians to recharge the refrigerant gas. They promptly sent a person who arrived at my property at 8:54 am on 8/1/26. The first thing I noticed is that the person did not have with him any tools or parts, not even a screwdriver to remove the internal panels and check the internals of the freezer. I thought to myself: This guy must have superpowers, like high-power X-ray vision, to check the freezer without opening it. That guy (I wouldn't call him a technician) walked around the freezer for exactly 5 minutes, then told me that he could not repair the freezer. He left at 9:11 am that morning. Total time spent, including lots of chat, was 17 minutes. For this con job, I was charged A$189.87. When I complained to the company, they replied that that was the cost of the expert advice of their so-called expert technician … what a scam it was.

Avoid if you can.

Avoid if you can.

This company found an interesting niche in the market that profits only them.
They target properties managed by a landlord on behalf of the owner. And since landlords mostly care about having the problem dealt with in a convenient (for themselves) way they (Alpha Appliance) can getaway with how they do things.
I know this sounds a bit vague so I'll describe how they 'serviced' dishwasher in the property that I rent.

I've contacted my landlord about broken dishwasher. Couple of days later someone from Alpha contacted me to schedule a repairman visit. Only the middle of the week was available.
Since I knew what the issue with the dishwasher was (heating element died) I was ready to provide exact model of the dishwasher to have it fixed in one go.
But the receptionist was not interested in that at all - just wanted to send the guy so he can diagnose the fault.
The guy came - took him 5 minutes to say: The heating element died. I don't have a spare, we will need to reschedule as he will need to order the part and provide landlord with a quote.
In the meantime I've ordered a new heating element (AU$42 delivered) and it took me less than 15 minutes to replace it.
Fast Forward two weeks - another call from Alpha that the landlord decided to replace the dishwasher (sic!) and that delivery can only be Mo-Fri 8am-3pm. I've asked how much they quoted for repair and I was told it's a secret. Tried asking how much would normally repair of a dishwasher with a broken heating element cost - could not get an answer.
I've called my landlord and he told me they have quoted him AU$600 for the repair! For something that costs less than $50 and takes 15min to fix (I live in Sydney ~40 min from CBD)
In the following weeks I got few very unpleasant/rude calls from Alpha forcing me to be at home during the week as they don't do deliveries on weekends. I would assume that company in the business of fixing white goods would have someone working on Saturdays.

To sum this up:
Alpha quotes for their 'quality' services are insane but they can get away with it as landlords lack expertise in this area and I guess owners trust their property management provider.
Alpha doesn't care about the person that lives in that property as it is not the person who chooses their services or pays their bill.
If you are a landlord please change the provider. They are truly dreadful.
