Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 376 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. People frequently complained about extremely long wait times for call-backs, with many left waiting many hours or even days without any proper response on the phone lines. Consumers often felt that the staff was dismissive, unhelpful, and frustratingly difficult to communicate with when seeking medical help during urgent situations. However, some customers also noted that when they finally connected with someone, the medical care received was surprisingly prompt, kind, and effective. A few people also praised specific doctors and practitioners for being thorough, professional, and genuinely reassuring during their stressful consultations. These positive moments brought genuine relief to patients who managed to get through.

Having waited 98 minutes

Having waited 98 minutes, a lady said Hi and in reply, I said good afternoon and as I went to explain a bout my situation, she put the phone down on me ???🤔
I am continuing again and again and keep saying your call is moving in a queue.
I have tried it several times today and waited for 40 minutes every time.

Disgraceful Service

I had to call 111 at 7 30 pm on Saturday night for my 96 year old mother who was having abdominal pain, sickness, and extremely shallow rapid breathing.
I was called back by a very nice doctor who told me that mum needed to be seen at home as a matter of urgency, and he would pass it on to the local area.
I had a call 5 hours later to say that at nearly 1.00am in the morning there wasn't much he could do, and mum had to contact the surgery on Monday morning.

I called the surgery and requested a home visit. Later that day the doctor came, listened to mums chest and suggested hospital via ambulance straight away. Mum had one and a half litres of fluid drained from her chest, and sadly they found other issues too.
Mum could clearly have died from his neglect and incompetence.
The ambulance crew were horrified and told me to forget them in future and call 999 instead. They also added that 111 are really only any help if all you want is a repeat prescription.
Very sad, as 111 really do not deliver what they are there for.

Emergency prescription

I am currently in Essex leaving for holiday for a few days and left an important prescription home in Belfast. I rang 111 and the gentleman on the phone could not have been more accommodating and helpful. Thank you!

No Benefit for the Taxpayers

My taxes go here and the one time i need actual help I can’t get it.

I cant put any weight on my foot, i essentially cant walk, having to piss in a bottle because I can’t move and I was told a clinician will call me and this was 3 hours ago. I called back up because of throbbing pain in my foot and the response was I will escalate with the clinician.

If i could take an Uber i would but as i specified over the phone “I CANT WALK” logic is you send an ambulance but no I have to wait until my situation is escalated

I'm not sure what has happened to 111…

I'm not sure what has happened to 111 but the folks I have just spoken too, especially the 2nd person was rushing, wasn't listening so I had to repeat myself and couldn't give me any sort of time frame for a call back in regards to my ill baby. It's actually ridiculous.

Absolutely completely USELESS

Absolutely completely USELESS.

I needed help getting a dentists who does sedation. 111 gave me a numer of a place 30 miles away for "advice". I told them I am agoraphobic. They basically shrugged.

They do useless box ticking the say they can't help.

Distressing, exhausting - worse than useless.

Close it down and no one would notice.

I have just received a call back from…

I have just received a call back from NHS 111 and, honestly, I was extremely disappointed by the attitude of the woman I spoke to.

Her tone was incredibly cold, dismissive and, at times, quite condescending. While I was answering her questions about my son’s injury, she seemed very impatient and made me feel as though I was an inconvenience rather than a parent calling because I was genuinely worried about my child.

I completely understand that NHS 111 staff are busy and have to deal with a high volume of calls. But surely basic empathy, patience and respectful communication are not too much to ask, especially when speaking to a worried parent.

I wasn’t asking for special treatment. I simply wanted someone to listen properly and speak to me with a reasonable level of courtesy and professionalism.

It was a really disappointing experience, and I honestly think this kind of attitude needs to be addressed. People call NHS 111 because they need help, not because they want to be made to feel like a burden.
Surely this is something that could be improved?

It took 16 hours to call me back!!

It took 16 hours to call me back!!! about my 85 mother with horrendous diarrhoea. The "Clinician" called back at 0330 waking us up!! with no apology. Since my initial call I had taken my Mum to A&E and she'd been home 8 hours! I had CANCELLED the callback on the text. I know they are inundated with calls but what a pointless waste of time. Thank goodness I didn't wait for my "2 hour callback"!

What a waste of time and money

What a waste of time and money! I was on a motorway bridge a few weeks ago got took to hospital left there for 24 hours then sent home! To see the crisis team at my local mental health service princess road malton! The crisis team seen me for 3 days then downgraded me to communal mental health who have now reported me for threats to kill! I spent 24 hours in police custody laat night due to this! When I didn't even make any threats to kill! If this is what people call help I think someone needs to have a word with themselves! your always gonna get someone who can't be bothered with you it's an ambulance or the police! The intention and silent message is stop ringing us go kill yourself or shut up! God is watching! And I hope you all burn in hell for your sins!

Triage system doesn't work. I am a 65-year-old disabled type one…

I am a 65-year-old disabled type 1 diabetic on insulin who lives alone. I have a suspected bowel blockage and have had terrible symptoms related to this. As an insulin dependent diabetic I need to eat on a regular basis and I haven't eaten since last night. (It is now 9:45 p.m.) I have been waiting for a call from a GP for over eight hours now. In my opinion the triage system used in this service does not work because I should not be left waiting this long to be told whether or not I can eat!

Left in excruciating wisdom tooth pain,

My name is Cheryl Yusuf im 65 years old Left in excruciating wisdom tooth pain,
I asked for a doctor to call me back for pain management while I wait for a appointment for extraction. They rang my phone with one ring giving me no time to answer so they could say they rang, then closed the case down. Absolutely disgusting service
With no duty to care. So literally sitting here crying in pain, you wouldn't leave a animal like this....

Inefficient and unreliable

They make you repeat information you’ve already supplied them with. Call back takes forever and this is extremely intolerable when young children dependent on you need to go to bed. Sometimes call back happens as late as midnight or next morning which is pathetic, unacceptable and pointless. Go’s need to be more efficient in handling patient requests. Leaving people with no prescription medication is one of the biggest drivers of this crisis. Completely incompetent and inefficient service!

Dangerously flawed

Dangerously flawed, not the advisors fault - the system was designed by some idiot who has no idea that they are not asking questions to an unwell patient but expects patient to triage themselves so the system can continue.

Awful and will kill people who miss a more important injury and are advised based on the less important but to the untrained patient appeared to be the most important.

Out of hours GP

NHS 111 were contacted and swiftly arranged a Saturday out-of-hours appointment the same morning.
(A separate review has been done for them)
I arrived 15 minutes early but was called in 5 minutes before my appointed time by Dr. Pham.
And what a pleasure it was, so much so that I would gladly accept him as my GP.
He listened; was ultra thorough, friendly yet professional to the effect that I felt priviledged to have been seen by him.
A prescription was at my chosen pharmacy before I left his room.
10/10 is rare but fully justified here.

The worst

One word I have for this service is diabolical, Infact my suicide ideation actually got sucked back in, it’s that comical I called twice the first person litterally huffed as she answered the phone, and I knew her energy was going to piss me off when I’m feeling like this, then the next person I could tell was just not it atall! I don’t understand why they actually work for this service like why would u choose to wake up in the morning and be on calls for those experiencing mental health distress if you, yourself don’t get it, lack empathy and don’t understand it I could tell that those interactions where not going to help me atall so I had to just burg the way I am feeling unfortunately and I have just had a baby! One of the woman are asking me so much questions that have nothing to do with my mental health asking me to confirm number confirm name confirm this and that taking long to do everything that’s why no one with actual real intentions would be calling that number Icall because I’m very close to giving up and it’s my last attempt to say I’ve tried but honestly it’s the worse service
