Explore the outer space of New Zealand with Spaceships. New Zealand has so much to offer and the easiest way to see it all is by compact campervan. Enjoy a smoother drive and better handling on the hilly and windy roads in New Zealand. Access places big vehicles can’t go to and save on fuel.

We rented a Beta 2S SC (stationwagon with toilet) for 5 weeks from Auckland and drop off in Christchurch. Good support for getting sim card working and added a piece to extend the bed (when sleeping with backdoor open using tent-piece). We never used the toilet, but with the certificate we where allowed to stay outside campsites at certain spots. Good customer support and at drop off they arranged a free taxi drop-of at Christchurch center. Cars are a bit old but we did not have any mechanical issues on the road.

We had a great experience with Spaceship rentals. They gave us everything we needed for our road trip and were very helpful if we had any questions. We felt very looked after with them.

Could not have had a worse experience. My partner and I decided to rent a campervan with this company, booked through an external company who organised everything for us they were fab however the disappointment this company caused would’ve ruined our trip if we let it.
To start things off we picked it up within the first day we noticed the door wouldn’t open, NONE of the USB were working and the fridge also kept dying. We went back the next day drove out of our way to get this fixed, they were able to fix the door and told us WE WOULD HAVE TO BUY a USB adapter ourselves to make this work. Outrageous. I spoke to the manager who said she would refund us the adapter and refund the day fee for the van. The experience just kept getting worse. We couldn’t fix the fridge we were nowhere near the stations and also they told us in the garage that they couldn’t fix it and it was just going to have to do. Me and my partner spent a fortune on food as it was either going off in the fridge or we would have to eat out because the fridge kept cutting out despite always keeping it on 1 as instructed. I raised a complaint with customer services but they did nothing except a sorry as the guy said when we dropped it back to Auckland he felt so sorry for us and the amount of money we paid is awful for the way we were treated that was coming from a staff member. ANYWAY to sum up PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH we could have got a lot better for our money had we shopped somewhere else. We have not recommended this to any of our friends who have been travelling New Zealand and wouldn’t wish an experience like we had on anyone.

I had a good time in the Dream Sleeper Mini. The car was working well without problems. Equipment was sufficient, but the cooking gear did not include a fire lighter. Before I could use the camping cooker I needed to buy one. Unfortunately, the water tap did not work.
Also, due to the change in the Auckland depot, I got a short notice message saying that the drop of location changed.

I was a little disappointed by the height of the van in the back. It was impossible to sit up and I can't imagine that 2 people would be comfortable in it. It was better with the extension but still not ideal and with the colder weather the extension is just not feasible.
Everything else was great- ease of pick up and drop off, the equipment, responsiveness of the spaceship team, and the general condition of the van ( that wasn't really a van).

My recent campervan hire in New Zealand with Spaceships Rentals was largely a positive experience, offering great value for money. One of the standout features was the ample storage space. Echoing previous advice, I strongly recommend bringing soft bags, and packing pods truly elevate organization within the compact living area. The secondary storage compartment primarily housed the cooking equipment and the fridge. For efficient food management, I suggest acquiring a few reusable shopping bags from a local supermarket to categorize your groceries. This made accessing items in the rear compartment and throughout the van much simpler. Additionally, I discovered useful spaces along the sides of the main storage units, perfect for stowing smaller, loose items. With a bit of creativity, you can really maximize the vehicle's storage potential for both general items and food.
As a solo traveler, the bed length was perfectly adequate. However, two adults would likely find the small double bed cramped. It's important to note that this campervan seems best suited for summertime adventures. Unfortunately, I experienced almost constant rain during my three-week rental, significantly limiting outdoor living. The interior space is really only designed for sleeping. Consequently, there's absolutely no dedicated area for cooking or eating inside. While I did opt for an additional package that included camping chairs and a table, these were unusable in wet weather. Therefore, if you plan on staying at campsites, I highly recommend seeking out those with undercover shared cooking facilities, as these invariably also include a small seating area. This provides a crucial alternative when the weather is poor and also offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow travelers.
The customer service was excellent. Their WhatsApp communication was particularly impressive; any queries I sent through were invariably answered within approximately 24 hours – I couldn't fault that at all. Despite having over 300,000 kilometers on the odometer, the vehicle felt remarkably solid and safe throughout my trip, which was reassuring.
I would also echo comments from other reviewers that the front doors had a tendency not to stay open on their own. While this was occasionally annoying, it really wasn't a major issue overall.
Overall, I found the hire to be great value for money. While Spaceships Rentals obviously couldn't control the weather, if I were to travel at the same time of year again, I would likely opt for a slightly larger van with the capacity for indoor cooking and dining in case of rain – a lesson learned!
Finally, a little tip: I utilized ChatGPT to help plan my routes. By specifying my interests – including outdoor activities like hiking and watersports, as well as cultural experiences and, specifically for this trip, a search for local Kiwi jewellers – it provided some fantastic recommendations. My last comment is that I done quite a lot of research before I booked a campervan and I have to say that out of all of the companies I’ve researched in New Zealand spaceship rentals came out with by far the best reviews and I cannot fault to the customer service I received. Highly recommended and I would use them again.

Really enjoyed our spaceship rentals journey, they were always on hand through whatsapp for any issues, the cooking utensils and equipment was good quality and you had everything we needed to free camp in NZ. The bed was comfy and warm for the time of year. Plenty of storage for food and our things. Pick up and drop off was super easy, lots of videos online to figure out how the ulitities work.

Our second time hiring from Spaceship, this year in the north last year in the south, the cars may be older but don’t let that put you off.
Our car drove well without any hiccups.
We love the little kitchen in the back complete with a fridge.

The Spaceship campervan was small but fine. During 4 weeks we had good weather, in bad weather the spaceship probably is a bit cramped. The camping equipment was very complete and even
though a few things in the car didn't work so well, you are faster and more flexible with this compact car than with a large camper.

Our Spaceships Van was the perfect companion for our South Island Roadtrip. We enjoyed our time, the equipment was well kept and it was stuffed out with everything you need. The toilet and water tanks were perfect for freecamping

The pick up and drop off process was really smooth. Appreciate the staff for the effortless experience. Minus points were the car’s suspension and brakes. The suspension had strange noises and brakes had a considerable shudder.

Thankyou so much you thought about everything one could need except a little rubbish bin. All in all my spaceship trip was so affordable, cheap on gas and comfortable to drive and knowing I could pull over and climb in the back for a knap was great. You've got me as a customer for keeps.

I accidentally left an item and they sent it back to me.
I really reccomend Spaceships for your travel van.

We had a great experience with spaceships reantals, easy pick up and drop off. Car was great equipped with proper gear. The only problem we had was that there was no proper winter bedding since it was the middle of winter we had to get sleeping bags. Otherwise everything was impeccable!
