Bait-and-Switch Pricing — Leaving ASAP

I joined Momentum Energy and within a month they hiked my rates by over 25%. Daily supply charge went from $1.24 to $1.55, usage from 27c to nearly 34c/kWh. No warning at sign-up just a surprise increase right after switching.

Feels like a classic bait-and-switch. There’s no trust here, and if they show no loyalty to new customers, I don’t feel any loyalty to them. I’m leaving them ASAP. Avoid if you expect stable pricing or transparency.

They don’t honour their advertised prices

I moved our electricity to Momentum after finding a cheaper plan on Finder - it was also advertised on Momentum’s own website. After signing up to the Warm Welcome plan I read the small print in the email and found they were actually charging a lot more than advertised and would also be charging an even more expensive ‘higher demand’ rate during the winter and summer months. I rang to find out what was going on and after over an hour on hold I was put through to the rates department who said they would not honour the advertised plan I signed up for. I cancelled immediately. Very shady operations and it’s just lucky I checked the small print.

I have found Momentum Energy to be a…

I have found Momentum Energy to be a Reputable and Reliable company. My use of electricity is only around the $80.00 mark per month with Momentum Energy... I have had good customer service with the consultants when phoning them... I will recommend Momentum to everyone that will listen... To Those who have said that their bills increased after changing to Momentum Energy, had they paid up their electricity accounts before switching... This makes a marked difference...

SCAM

SCAM! Please avoid.
They advertised a lower rate on their website for the nothing fancy plan and after lots of research and comparing I switched from LUMO based on the rate and then when I received my first bill I was charged a much higher rate. They will not honour the original rate advertised and going off these google reviews I suspect they are doing this to a lot of customer.
It also looks like the 5 star reviews are fake.
I will be reporting to the ombudsman as this is extremely unethical.
Interestingly, soon after switching I saw this comparison list which has momentum as the fourth highest billed energy company. AVOID and don't be fooled by their fake reviews.

My electricity bill with Momentum…

My electricity bill with Momentum suddenly shot up to $650 for the June-Sep period. Compared to previous years, it was $200 more. They have increased my daily charge unit price from $1 to $1.44. I rang and spoke to two customer service officers today and they couldn't explain my bills. They beated around the bush talking about anything and everything but not answering my questions. Don't go to these people. They don't even deserve 1 star.

Monthly charge around $200 shot upto $590 for 18 days when we moved supplier????

We were charged higher price than quoted.
When we moved supplier we were charged $590 for 18 days while 30 days in July was only $218. We normally use less than $200/month. We don't use heater or have any new equipments in house. So this charge is excessive.
That was exactly same with another reviewer name John. So I wasn't the only one.
BE CAREFUL when you sign up with them.

Intro Offer Prices don't last long!

Signed up because previous provider put rates up by 25%. After 2 months with them, they reduced solar feed-in tariff by over 25%. Less than a month later I received another email telling me my usage charges are going up 44%. I can only surmise that the "starter rate" they put you on is only to get you to be a customer and then after a month or two try and gouge you with increased prices in the hope you are too apathetic to change providers. I find this behaviour disgraceful. Will never go back to them.

Beware of introductory offers that don't last!

Watch out for SmoothPay

Be really careful when you sign up for SmoothPay!!!!! The weekly/fortnightly/monthly amount you pay ISN'T everything they are charging you. The moment you leave your property, change providers or stop paying SmoothPay, you HAVE TO PAY THE OPENING BALANCE!!!

Even though your invoice emails say to 'Ignore the amount' above. You shouldn't!! It's money you owe them.

Poor customer service

Momentum hit me with a large bill due to their incorrect readings and charged via direct debit within a few days of notifying and allowing time to arrange a payment plan. My email complaints were overlooked and then we played phone tag until I gave up and switched providers.

Don't believe their so called cheap rates!

Don't believe their so called cheap rates, made a HUGE mistake trusting them and switching and my bill went from $205 with previous electricity provider up to over $300 a month even though they claim on their website you get cheaper prices, STAY FAR AWAY from them unless you want to learn the hard way, be EXTREMELY careful! And avoid moving both electricity and gas to the same company, they will RIP you off, extremely disappointed and unhappy that I made the stupid stupid mistake of TRUSTING them!

Fantastic to deal with

Fantastic to deal with, great customer service and the rates were good too. The phone staff are actually able to answer questions and deal with issues (very rare in my experience of energy retailers) Very pleasantly surprised!

Update to below review

Momentum told me that our final meter read issue was sorted. They couldn't read the gas meter because it was inside the property so agreed (after many calls and emails) to close the account based on a photo of the meter. We paid the final bill and I was told the matter was sorted. Then, out of the blue 12 months later a credit agency contacted me regarding an overdue bill. A very frustrating customer experience from momentum.
