I would strongly advise avoiding Kayak, Priceline, Ace Rent a Car, and Drivo Rent a Car at all costs. This was hands down the absolute worst, most stressful travel experience of my life, defined by hidden fees, non-existent customer service, and outright predatory business practices. Here is why you should never book with any of these companies:Deceptive Booking (Kayak & Priceline): I used Kayak to compare rates and was redirected to Priceline to book a "deal." Priceline completely dropped the ball. They confirmed my reservation, took my money immediately, and assured me everything was set. But when things went wrong at the counter, Priceline completely washed their hands of the situation, offering zero support and refusing to refund a single dime. They are nothing but a middleman that takes your cash and abandons you.The Ace & Drivo Counter Nightmare: When I arrived, I discovered that Ace Rent a Car and Drivo Rent a Car operate out of the same sketchy, understaffed desk. The wait time was over two hours just to speak to an agent.Extortion and Fake Fees: Once I finally made it to the front, the scam truly began. Drivo and Ace completely refused to honor the prepaid rate I secured on Priceline. They aggressively forced me to buy their astronomical, mandatory in-house insurance, claiming my personal auto policy and premium credit card coverage weren't "valid" in their system.Bait-and-Switch Tactics: To make matters worse, they didn't even have the class of car I paid for. They tried to force me into a dirty, high-mileage compact car that smelled like smoke, while trying to upcharge me for the midsize car I had already booked.Save yourself the massive headache, the ruined vacation, and the stolen money. Avoid Kayak and Priceline's deceptive funnels, and stay far away from the absolute scams that are Ace and Drivo Rent a Car. Stick to reputable companies that actually respect their customers and honor their contracts.
This is by FAR the worst rental company I've ever worked with. First off, in Newark, the process to get TO the place was a giant pain in the neck. Then we get there and are forced to pay additional money (now making it more expensive than any other agency I could have rented from) for their 'full coverage' insurance because my car insurance that's always been fine for rentals in the past wasn't good enough so that was an extra $389. Then fast forward to after the trip... we dropped the car off as scheduled, on time, tank full all that and I get the invoice that shows the -$200 for the allegedly pending refund of the deposit amount. Then a MONTH later, I'm making my credit card payment only to see that that deposit has never been credited back. I reached out to the company demanding they refund my deposit, which they did the following day, but I'm guessing they generally don't actually refund it unless people notice and ask. Absolutely awful.
DO NOT RENT HERE. I don't even know where to start, so please see the numbered list below in chronological order:
1.They have the wrong address for pickup listed in their invoice email, website, phone number, and instagram. When you get there, it's just security guards telling you you have to go to the airport, so I had to take a second $20 Uber, and this information is listed nowhere but the door on the old address. Insane.
2. When I got to the desk (Shaun was very nice, he should get out of this company ASAP), they informed me that A. the place where I was taking the car would mean that I had to pay an extra $15/day. (WTF, I've never heard of anything like this before) B. the insurance that I bought by CLICKING THE LINK THEY SENT that said I needed insurance to use the car, actually didn't count, and in fact, if I wanted the car, I needed to pay $40 MORE a day on top of the insurance I already paid for.
3. When you call the number, it either connects then silently hangs up, or connects, then tells you the number is no longer in service.

Off site walk to a bus take bus to train take train to shuttle to rental place. I was under the impression that I had filled out paperwork and paid in advance and only needed to show ID and proof of insurance and sign rental agreement. I felt like it was a set up to get more money. They demanded insurance company online access and my personal password or I had to buy their insurance. Then I had to fill out all new paperwork for Drivo car rental not ace. Then I had to pay a $200.00 refundable deposit refundable after 20 days. Today is 28 days and still no refund. In my life I have rented cars more than 50 times. I have never had an experience like this ever.
Still waiting for refund. I will never do business with these companies ever again and will take every opportunity to warn as many people as possible not to use them.

They made the rental and shuttle process very stress free
Thanks to Boukare and abdull

BEWARE! This company will not release your security deposit for a month. Rented with them both times and I had to call both times and wait until 20 BUSINESS days before they would release my funds. They also do not accept several forms of payments. There are more reputable and customer friendly rental companies to use.

I had a reservation with Drivo, EWR-174920, I was very happy with the vehicle's status. It was new and clean, and I was very happy with the customer service.
I had one issue with them that I asked them a few times before the rental date if I'll need to pay any more money when I arrive to the desk for insurance etc since I have Credit card collision insurance, and they told me a few times that I won't need to pay anything more at the desk and no insurance is needed.
When I arrived at the desk 22/07/2026, I was told that I MUST have liability insurance and if not I can have the vehicle, and they made me pay almost DOUBLE the amount I was quoted. Being that I was at an airport and didnt have different options I paid for it, but I was very disappointed...
So if you're thinking of making a reservation with drivo I do recommend it, just make sure you have private full lability beforehand.

Terrible Experience — I Do Not Recommend This Company
My experience with this company has been extremely frustrating. After returning the vehicle, weeks have passed and my deposit still has not been refunded. Instead of resolving the issue clearly, they continue adding charges and giving different explanations.
During the rental, I purchased the insurance they offered me specifically so I would be covered in case of any issues. Now they are also trying to charge me for toll-related fees that were never clearly explained to me when I rented the vehicle.
The worst part is the lack of transparency. A customer has the right to know exactly what they are being charged for, how much each charge is, and why money is being deducted from their deposit. Additional charges should not simply appear afterward without a clear explanation, documentation, and supporting receipts.
I have had to call, send emails, and repeatedly follow up just to get answers about my own money. A professional company should return deposits within a reasonable amount of time and immediately provide documentation for any legitimate charges.
Until they provide me with a complete itemized breakdown, official toll receipts, and a clear explanation for every dollar they are trying to charge me, I consider the handling of my rental and deposit completely unacceptable.
Be very careful before renting from this company. Keep all of your receipts, contracts, insurance documents, and carefully review any charges they try to add afterward.

They will steal your credit card information, and make many fraudulent claims...so check your credit card statements when you get home...if they offered you a "free upgrade", decline it...they are lying!!!

Awful experience. The rental office was outside of the airport, the location of the shuttle pickup to get to the office was difficult to find, and then the shuttle took forever. Then they told me the additional insurance was going to be $10 a day and charged my credit card $405. They have not corrected this charge yet. Furthermore, it's been over a week since I returned the car and they still have not refunded my deposit of $200. Flat out worst experience I have ever had with a rental car company!!!

They were given incorrect information over the phone regarding vehicle return fees, and they refused to correct it. We were charged double upon returning the car, even though we had clearly specified the drop-off location. When we received the receipt days later, they refused to make an adjustment. We also received a $50 fine and were charged an additional $50 to process it—an absolutely exorbitant administrative fee.

My rental was upgraded free of charge. There were no long lines and returning the vehicle is seamless and quick. Would definately rent from Drivo again and again.

The staff was not very friendly. I was given a lower class car than the one I reserved. I told them explicitly, they said tough, gave no resolution. Also, they did not warn me there was a school zone right outside the rental place even valid sunday morning without blinking!!! and i got 2 tickets which Drivo add a $50 PER TICKET BS charge to, total scam, predatory practice, too late to get recourse. Saved nothing. They acted like a fly by night, low cost, stick-it-to-you with unethical fees, 100%. A horrid example of "ensh**ttification" and the results of a board of directors and shareholders that don't give a darn about screwing over customers.

JFK Airport rental:
JFK Airport rental:
1) Ace Rental claims to be a JFK rental, but they are not at JFK.
2) Once there, it took a long time to get the car.
3) The car was old, roughly 50k miles.
4) The car can't be driven into most states (not a national company).
5) They repeatedly asked if I wanted insurance, as they all do. The clerk was friendly and nice. I politely declined again and again as always. He charged $500+ for the insurance two days after I left with the car.
5) I called to have the charges removed, and they said, "Sure, as soon as we look at the video of you at the counter." They promised 2 days. After 3 days they said sorry, please wait. After 10 days, "Sorry, please wait."
6) They are smart, they make a lot of money with this scam unless they get put in jail. But who has the resources to enforce this?

I had a very disappointing experience with Drivo.
When I made my reservation online, I declined the insurance option because I planned to use my credit card’s rental car coverage. At no point during the booking process was it clearly stated or properly warned that I was required to have my own personal auto insurance policy in order to rent the vehicle. This is important information that should be clearly disclosed before allowing customers to complete and prepay a reservation.
Another issue is the cancellation fee. When you prepay for a reservation, the website does not make it clear that a $150 fee will be charged if you cancel. Customers should be made fully aware of such a significant cancellation penalty before paying.
The customer service experience was also frustrating. When I contacted them with straightforward questions about whether I could rent the car without a personal insurance policy, I could not get a clear yes or no answer. The responses were always things like “maybe,” “might,” or “it depends.” If a customer is asking whether they meet the requirements to rent a vehicle, the company should be able to provide a clear and definitive answer.
Overall, I feel that important terms were not clearly communicated during the booking process, and the customer service was unable to provide clear answers when I needed clarification. I would not recommend Drivo based on my experience.
