I failed the onboarding test four…

I failed the onboarding test four times, not because I didn’t try, but because this process is absurdly rigid and completely disconnected from real learning. You can follow every rule, read every guideline, and apply every piece of feedback, and it still won’t be enough.

This isn’t onboarding - it’s gatekeeping. The feedback is nitpicky, repetitive, and focused on semantics rather than actual problem-solving. Instead of helping you improve, it drains your time and motivation.

If you have literally anything better to do with your life, do that instead. This experience was a complete waste of time.

Great platform for QA freelancing

I have been working as a freelance software tester for 5 months, the website navigation is very user-friendly, onboarding tasks required to start working are clear and depends on the courses provided by the website, If you have questions you can ask support and they reply fast, sometimes within 1 hour, also there is a discord server where you can ask testers like you,
Every test cycle you join contains instructions that if you feel something in it is ambiguous you can ask the team leader in the chat about it, If a bug you submitted got rejected, the team leader give you a clear reason of rejection and you can actually discuss him/her about the rejection or open a dispute if you believe it shouldn’t be rejected,
For me i have been enjoying my time working as a freelancer on Test io and I believe it is a great way to practice finding bugs and enhance your skills in SQA, I believe that anyone can earn a lot here when working hard, Because Bug hunting is a skill that requires practice and as long you are improving in it you will earn more.

Risk to Reward ratio is negligble

My experience testing this app raised serious concerns about the risk–reward balance imposed on users and testers.

The onboarding and core flows rely heavily on ambiguous or misleading behaviour that shifts risk to the user without providing corresponding value or transparency. Key examples include:

Testing the functionality of broken ambigiously worded apps that are later not accepted as buggy but are intended to work in this way.

Testing apps that simulate security or system-level behaviour (for example, appearing to lock the screen) without actually enforcing that state and stating the app is "intended" to work that way.

Testing apps which make requests for elevated privileges (such as call-related or system access permissions) without a clear explanation of necessity or demonstrable benefit to the user. Increased permissions increase exposure and risk, yet no proportional reward is evident.

Distribution via sideloaded APK rather than a standard app store channel, which places additional security and integrity risk on the user while offering no compensating safeguards.

Individually, these choices may be defensible as “intentional design.” Collectively, they represent a pattern of risk externalisation: the user is asked to accept higher levels of exposure, ambiguity, and trust, while receiving minimal clarity, control, or value in return.

For users who are security-aware or risk-conscious, this imbalance is difficult to justify. Trust in platforms and application are built through transparency, proportionality and respect for user boundaries. In this case, those elements are weak or absent.

I would advise potential users and testers to carefully consider whether the risks being asked of them on this platform are matched by genuine utility or benefit, and to proceed cautiously if they value clear security guarantees and honest system behaviour.

21/1/25 Update in response to test.io reply addressing their definition of "misinformation" and to reiterate the salient points of my initial review.

I would like to clarify that my comments were not intended to narrowly define onboarding as the initial qualification tasks alone but rather to describe the early-stage tester experience as it is encountered in practice, including the transition from qualification into initial test cycles.

While I acknowledge that the formal onboarding process focuses on understanding instructions, creating attachments and submitting reports, the concerns raised in my review relate to what testers are exposed to immediately upon joining test cycles, particularly early assignments where context, intent and risk are not clearly communicated.

Specifically, my observations relate to:

Applications presented for testing where ambiguous or misleading behaviour is later classified as “intended design,” despite that intention not being clearly conveyed within the app or accompanying test instructions.

Scenarios where applications simulate system-level or security-related behaviour without enforcing it, creating ambiguity for testers tasked with assessing functional correctness or security-related flows.

Requests for elevated permissions or sideloaded APK installation during test cycles, where the necessity, safeguards, or proportional benefit to the tester are not always clearly articulated.

These points are not a claim that such practices occur during the qualification tasks themselves but rather that they form part of the practical risk profile imposed on testers once they begin participating in live cycles in the early stages of their engagement with the platform.

My use of the term onboarding was therefore descriptive of the initial tester journey, not a technical assertion about internal process boundaries.

I recognise that your Terms and Privacy documentation exists and that safety is stated as a priority. My concern, however, is about how risk, ambiguity and responsibility are experienced in practice by testers—particularly those who are security-aware and whether those risks are proportionately matched by transparency, clarity and reward.

I appreciate the opportunity to clarify this distinction.

Hi Mr Hart,

Thank you for sharing your concerns.

We would like to clarify that this description contains misinformation and does not accurately reflect our onboarding process. Onboarding does not involve testing apps - this is after the tester has passed and is given the option to join or quit a Test Cycle.

The onboarding process focuses on understanding instructions, describing screencasts, and correctly creating attachments. We’re committed to testers and our customers' safety as indicated in our "Terms and Privacy."

My account was recently banned...

Good for those starting their careers in testing and i loved the onboarding. My account was banned anyways because i violated one of their rules. In their T& C it is indicated that testers who are banned are paid all the money they're owed. This hasn't happed yet to me.I am told the money will remain in Cirro since it hasn't reached the minimum threshold for withdrawal. This is ridiculous since there's not possible way that it will reach the threshold since my account is banned and therefore i cannot work to the threshold.Rules should apply to both parties

Hello Elvis,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We understand how frustrating this situation can feel. Unfortunately, Trello sets the payment limit; Test IO does not manage this. Even though there has been an action to reduce the threshold, it was not possible.

Since you’re already banned, this means that the contractual relationship has already been broken, and only registered testers can get paid.

Feedback like yours helps us review how we communicate and support testers within our established standards.

The best testing platform hands down

The best testing platform hands down, they might not be as big as Utest but they will provide you with opportunities to earn and grow. There is transparency in what it takes to level up, their support team is also good at solving any issues testers have. The biggest complaint I see about this platform is that there aren’t much testcases and that most of them are exploratory, well that sounds like a skill issue. If you have strong bug hunting skills, hard work ethic, the ability to follow rules accurately and passion for testing. This is the right place for you.

Aspiring to be a Tester? TestIO is the place.

I have been with TestIO for a while now and I can say it's quite an interesting place. For a new tester on the platform, there are a lot of resources to help. New testers should take advantage of the Greenhorn tests as this helps to build confidence and also bug rate (which is an important aspect of TestIO). Another resource available is the Discord group where you can ask questions (about bugs and other things relating to TestIO) and interact with other testers.
If you want to start earning on the get go, then TestIO is the place to be, just make sure you take your time to digest every information regarding test instructions and bug reporting.

Do Not Apply to become a tester : Unprofessional platform and Unfair Bans

I applied to become a tester after a friend recommended the platform. I invested an entire day completing the required courses and assignments. At the final stage, I submitted the two mandatory test bug reports, which I filled out manually without using any AI tools or external assistance. Despite this, I received a rejection from a team leader claiming the work was not my own.

I attempted to clarify the situation through every official channel available the website’s support chat, the support email address, and even the Discord server. I received no response through chat or email. On Discord, a mentor advised me that the rejection may have been triggered by an automated system and suggested I submit another bug report. I followed that instruction and submitted a new report, again fully written by me.

When I later checked for updates, I discovered that my account had been banned both on the platform and on the Discord server, without any explanation or prior notice. Even the “Contact Support” button on the site was non-functional.

The entire experience has been extremely frustrating and, frankly, unprofessional. I was given no reason, no feedback, and no opportunity to resolve the situation, despite making multiple attempts to communicate. I was genuinely eager to join the platform and learn more, but based on this experience, I can’t recommend the platform to anyone

I am a freelancer usually do software testing🖥 and I have tried many crowd testing platforms but test IO is the only best crowd testing platform because of its awesome interface, Community, Chat support and test cycle invitations on regular basis, Whereas other platforms offers very less opportunity with average payout💵.

The best thing which I liked the most about the test IO is their interface (specially web🌍) it is very simple, easy to use and provides very smooth user flow experience.

Abuse of new joiners

I literally think they abuse the tester, less than 30% accepted bugs, for payment, but later on they were fixed.
Projects with 400 known bugs, and they expect to have you first search all those and then test. Here's a tip, fix those bugs! And then retest!

Nobody is willing to test an app with hundreds of bugs and to exclude the duplicate, just to hope maybe will find something new, and earn 2-5$. This is insane!
I have analyzed other tests, 90% testers are new joiners. 70% of tests are rejected.
I bet they reject them, and then a friend or family members will make money by resending that bug that will arrive at the client.

Later added / reply:
Of course we know that known bugs are controlled by the client, but they are YOUR clients and you have a say in this.

Training has nothing to do with this, unless you are trying to say "we train you for free so work for free". Testers rejected is one thing, number of bugs rejected is another thing. Exactly my point, you reject bugs not testers. I truly hope you realize that.

If you say you are fair with the testers think about the fact that they open a website with 400 known bugs, and spend hours to find bug only to see that the bugs they found were reported weeks ago, not fixed and they wasted time. Or if they find one or two bugs they are paid 2-8$ for a bug and they spent hours to filter the known bugs, which is a very low compensation

Hi Na,

We’re sorry to hear about your frustration. Test Cycles with many Known Bugs are not controlled, and set by Test IO, but by the App/Website Customer. If you do not want to test this, you can easily quit the test, as long as you have not made contributions.

Test IO consistently dedicates its efforts to training new testers for free. We provide educational resources, organize competition events for beginners, and even offer Greenhorn Test Cycles. Additionally, last year's statistic shared by the manager in Discord indicates that less than 1% of testers who completed onboarding get rejected.

We continuously strive to ensure fairness and accuracy for all testers.
