Working with Suburban Propane out of Portland, Maine is horrible. Their phone system automatically hangs up after 10 minutes on hold to prevent a build up of customers. Once you get a human after s... See more

They DESTROY you if you leave...
Absolutely the WORST company ever. They bought out our previously very good Griffin's propane. We had Griffin's for 6 years. With Griffin's, 2min phone call then refill was on the way the next day!
Then...forward to TODAY (20 May 2025): Suburban Propane bought out Griffin's. And... without sending an actual bill (as they were transitioning)... the very FIRST letter ever from Suburban Propane?
"Welcome to our company! Btw... you have a LATE FEE" (for a bill we never sent you two weeks ago).
So... tried to CALL them. First time, rang for 15 minutes and no answer.
Waited a couple of days... then... rang and rang. I put in my "Call back number" They said they would "call back in 11 minutes"
After TWO HOURS, STILL no call. Today... next day... STILL NO CALL.
Yesterday, I called a different Propane service so I can DROP the Suburban Propane crap company. **MORE** : They then destroy you for more $$ when you leave. UNBELIEVABLE.
They have since put a CHARGE in for $250 for a "close-out fee" (!) ... this is *AFTER* they kept the $288 (90ga propane) of OURS for themselves... so they can then sell our 90ga of propane to the next customer. Incredible criminal theft from this CRAP company.
Suburban is the most crooked gas company I've ever seen
So my experience with Suburban Propane, stay far far far away from this crooked company. If you use them, check your statements. Ever since getting signed up with them it's been a nightmare. I was told there wasn't an equipment fee, then turned around and charged a rental fee, equipment check fee, safety fee, transport fee... I was also told the price of propane would be off of national averages, each time they tried to bill me for 2½ TIMES what anyone else in Carteret County is charging for propane. I finally got sick of the fraud and robbery so I cancelled the auto fill and told them to come pick up the tank when it was empty. They were supposed to pick it up in August and they never showed. Then they come to "fill my tank in February", thank God someone was home to stop them. I told them again, we cancelled services and they were supposed to come get the tank. They removed the tank finally. They also tried to charge me rent of the tank in January which I called and complained. Then they just sent me a notice threatening me with collections of I didn't pay them, so I thought it was for the tank rental still. She said no, it was for the 5 gallons minimum that they "delivered" in FEBRUARY when they finally got my tank! $67.28 for 5 GALLONS that they didn't deliver, but charge me $13.46 a GALLON! I pay $65 for 100 lb/ 23 Gallon tank at Hicks Propane in Morehead now for anyone who is looking for a better deal than what Suburban is doing. They are absolutely ripping the people of at least Carteret County off. So look at your statements and buyers beware. BTW the NC average for propane right now is $3.342 per gallon, so look at your statements and see how much Suburban is charging you per gallon, plus safety fee, plus transport fee, plus equipment rental, plus, plus, plus... Just thought I would share and try to protect anyone else getting ripped off by suburban or anyone shopping for propane services.
Poor communication & service
Have used the company for 13 years and was suddenly charged a "minimum usage fee" in addition to the rental fee for the tank. I called to question it and was told someone entered my fenced-in property in March to complete an inspection without contacting me. Security cameras do not show anyone entering or on my property when they said the inspection occured. The refused to refund the fee despite the inspection never happening. I requested the tank to be picked up as we cancelled service due to the random charges they incur and was told "we'll get around to it in a few weeks." Last year, they charged me for propane that was delivered to someone else and I had to jump through hoops to show proof that no one delivered propane to my property, despite camera footage showing no one was there on the date in question. After multiple phone calls to get information, I was told there's a tank pickup fee as well. You'd think they'd want to keep business not push it further away. Definitely won't use them in the future and would suggest noone else do either
Untrustworthy company
Untrustworthy company. Filled my tank full without notice. I had to take a loan to pay the bill. Also, charged 160.00 to cancel my account and pick up the tank. This was after I paid for a tank rental I'm not going to use. Idaho.
This is the single worst company I’ve…
This is the single worst company I’ve ever dealt with. I own my own propane tank and they had no legal right to shut off my tank leaving me without heat during a 30 degree night. Then they drug their feet to remove the lock the next day forcing me out of my home. They claimed they thought they owned the tank and said mistakes happen.
bad choice
they are the worst company ever to deal with. they gave me a credit for 1027 dollars from my old house that I sold. and 4 months later took it back and turned off the propane at my new house. I called them for 2 weeks before they turned it off and they said the billing must be a error. end of the story they never call you back and again they are the worst. Find someone else!!!
Worst ever, many confirm
They just charged me almost $7 a gallon, allegedly because I don’t use that much. So why did you fill it??
For several weeks, I’ve tried to reach the office - main number is just a call center - and they do not return calls.
Just went to the office in town, during posted business hours - closed sign on the door, no indication of when it will be open.
So they can keep charging me whatever they want, and can’t be reached to complain or request account change to avoid these issues.
They also have an ‘early termination fee’ of $250! I did not agree to this, unless it’s in the fine print. Other propane companies in the area don’t do this, and were a bit shocked about it.
Recognition of excellent service.…
In my review I would like to call attention to the work performed by two people working for suburban propane in nashville, Indiana.
It was the recent cold spell and I ran out of propane. I
called the local office and the very nice person , Georgeann, was able to get service out very quickly. When a leak was detected at that time, I called again and very quickly Jon Lucas came out, replaced some old regulators and turned the propane back on.
It is not often that you can receive such attention and excellent service these days. My thanks to these two individuals and to Suburban Propane, Nashville, IN
Ripoff company
Copied from my Google review:
I'm going to vent a bit. I got a fill up today, 04 March 2025, and they charged $6.21/gallon. The EIA dot GOV websites states that the Maryland delivered to home cost per gallon as of 24 February 2025 is $3.785/gallon. Another local company, Taylor Gas, is currently as of today, 04 March 2025, $3.30/gallon. It blows my mind that Suburban is so simply robbing customers in Southern Maryland. After I called and complained, they gave me a 20% discount (now $4.968/gallon). That is still 50.55% higher than what Taylor Gas charges.
If you have the option to go to just about any other provider in Maryland, maybe you should. But... but, if you have a tank with Suburban at your home that you bought with the tank already installed, you are stuck in their lease (which costs roughly $48/year). That is not bad, right? You cannot buy your way out of the lease in order to use other suppliers for much lower costs. You are stuck. If you want to cancel service with them, then you will have to get that tank remove (out of the ground) at your cost.
Why can't you buy out of the lease, because their lawyers gave them the great idea to state that the tank is used and they cannot sell it to anyone. Where is D.O.G.E. where you need them?
This sounds like a bad dream and it is. Suburban Propane should be avoided at all costs...
Run out of propane and will cost you a arm and a leg!
I ran out of propane an over site on my part, So I called Suburban Propane for delivery,
{{no emergency}} as we cook quite a bit on out outdoor grill WHICH IS A TANK WE FILL OFF AND ON THAT WE OWN! & can use the microwave until delivery arrives WHEN EVER THAT IS AS DO NOT GIVE A DAY OR TIME JUST TELL YOU WITHIN THE NEXT TEN DAY'S {It's like they expect someone to be there at home for the next ten days sun- up to sun- down as they don't know when they will send a truck out one's way to get filled.
But because ""I did not call in a "emergency delivery"" which cost $$$BUCKS on top of the cost $$$.$$for the propane & their delivery charge, "I get told" {{ they may just have to do a leak test which will cost me an Add'll $90.00}}.
One way or another a total Ripp off!
If their tank is not holding pressure that's the Co. fault if their tanks and gauges not working right, why should I have to pay for their service to repair if any? It's not my tank nor my gauges!
I pay rent for that tank which is supposed to cover their responsibility to make sure my money which I pay for propane does not go seeping out their tanks or gauges.
Why should I who pays for the propane and pays for rental of stated tank which servicing of stated tank should be covered under and all to perform the task of servicing me with propane have to pay for their servicing of such "*** it's not my tank it's theirs!!!!!!**** My responsibility is to pay two bills the propane which comes to my home and rental of stated tank. Not to pay for their service to make sure that their equipment is working correctly that's their responsibility! Isn't this the reason for renting they are responsible for their equipment!!
If was my own personal tank they would be telling me same thing {{It's not our tank it's yours so your responsible for it} & we are only responsible for putting propane into it! 25 yrs of dealing with this and not getting better it just maybe time to move on!They are not only one's around who service & provide propane and I heard some don't charge for the tank every year for rental either & don't charge extra because it's not their tank you're using like Surburban does!
Worst company you could ever deal with
Worst company you could ever deal with. Their main goal is profit. Regardless how that screws you as the customer. Your best bet is to RUN in the other direction away from this company.
Thankful for their people!
I called suburban propane and spoke with Georgiana. She was so helpful, I was in dyer need of help and she was able to help me with everything and all the while calming me down. She was so pleasant and great to work with I will ask to speak with her from now on. After she helped me with my service I had a problem a day later and I contacted her and she went over and beyond. Not only did she send JR out to help asap she called back to let me know where he was and she called back to make sure my issue was resolved. Most utility companies get a bad reputation but suburban propane should be grateful for such amazing employees that not only do their job but do it well. Thank you so much Georgiana and JR for all your help!
I really appreciate the lack of…
I really appreciate the lack of understanding shown.
1) you bill me $300 on a "budget plan" per month after supposedly monitoring my usage for a year. However, it turns out that you should have been billing me $700 per month (actual usage). At the end of the year on the budget plan - suddenly I owe $3000+ which is more than my Social Security monthly check. Although I manage to pay $2000 by skipping 2 months of car payments, Suburban will not deliver propane. Beware of the budget plan - the original estimate will be less than what you actually use, and you will wind up with a balloon payment and no consideration for their mistake.
Zero management , poor customer service
I bought a house that had suburban tanks at it. The tanks were unplugged at the request of the seller cause they were leaking. the seller said they would gift us the propane. Our walk through was a week before we signed and it was cold outside. We asked that the propane be hooked up so we had heat in the house when we closed. Suburban came out and hooked up one tank. Not sure why there. Then when we closed they came out and filled the tank that wasn't hooked up. Again not sure why on this eiter. Then they billed me for the fill up and they billed me for the gifted propane. i called them and told them to come get there tank and i will be looking else where for propane. I have called customer service more than 10 times so far to get he bill fixed and all i hear is i will send it to the manager. They want to charge me as well for early termination of contract... How would we have a contract with them if the house was not in our name yet. Another bull Sh*& reason. So 2 months later i still have two tanks on my property, my bill has not been adjusted and no word back from any supervisor. I call daily and email with zero responce. Do not go with this company. there are so many more out there. This company can go bankrupt for all i care. Also i will not pay a cent till this is taken care of and after that i will only pay for what i asked for in the begining which is to hook up the tanks for heat. Even that i probally won't pay for cause i believe heat needs to be on in order to close on a house, especially in NY november. Company is a joke!!!

Scammers....If I could leave a ZERO I WOULD
If I could leave a ZERO I WOULD.
THEY SCAM YOU AND INSUKT YOUR INTELLIGENCE.
IF YOU ARE A SENIOR AND YOU DO NOT WANT AUTO DELIVERY... THEY WILL COOPERSTE FOR ONE YEAR.
THAN THEY FILL YOUR TANK IN SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER AS IF IT RAN OUT...
Do not let them deliver tanks or lie to you about auto delivery vs. On call delivery. I use small amounts of propane. They are a scam operation.
Longtime customer
Have been a suburban propane, customer for years however their service is poor to say the least.. They have changed the delivery date three times with no explanation and still cannot guarantee a delivery date even though they had a week and a half notice. There has not been any inclement weather in my area except low temperatures
Absolutely criminal
Absolutely criminal. Refuse to give you any costs up front but not afraid to send you a big fat bill. My husband did 85% of the work because the guy they sent was 70 something and could barely walk. They sent me a $780 bill for a repair.
tank rental went from $26.60 on 1/3/24…
tank rental went from $26.60 on 1/3/24 to $51.60 1/3/25, had them come out to level the tank in March 2024. He shoved a crushed beer can under the legs and said that was good enough! the whole time he was here he was on his cell phone. When this tank is empty, I'll shove it over onto the driveway and have them come get it. Worst company ever to deal with. Their empathy is non existent. don't even bother sending them the review, they don't give a crap!!!!
