Open Letter to the Owners of Restaurant Depot, Everett Massachusetts.
Stop Collaborating with ICE
Our message to the owners and management of Restaurant Depot is simple:
Stop collaborating with ICE. Do not allow ICE agents to use your parking lots to wait, monitor, or conduct enforcement operations targeting our community. Your managers and supervisors should be properly trained in customer service, conflict de, escalation, and respectful communication with customers, employees, and community leaders.
On Thursday, July 30, we began receiving calls from community members reporting the presence of ICE vehicles in and around your parking lot, as well as a black Ford vehicle repeatedly circling the area.
At approximately 9:30 a.m., two volunteers went into the store and asked to speak with the manager.
They were refused information, and no member of management came out to speak with them.
I arrived at approximately 10:00 a.m. As I arrived, I observed five ICE vehicles leaving the parking lot.
I entered the store and politely asked an employee to relay a message to the manager, requesting that Restaurant Depot stop cooperating with ICE and not allow ICE agents to park on the property.
At that moment, a young employee, approximately 23 years old, approached me, pushed me, and knocked my phone to the ground.
That is not an acceptable way to treat anyone, especially a woman who was attempting to have a peaceful conversation during a tense situation.
Our community understands the fear and harm caused by ICE enforcement actions.
This was not the first time ICE has been reported at this location or in the surrounding area.
We have also received reports that customers have been arrested after being targeted in this parking lot.
In addition, we have received complaints from customers regarding poor treatment in the past, as well as concerns about the treatment of employees.
For that reason, we are asking the Department of Labor to investigate the working conditions and the treatment of workers at this location.
We are calling on Restaurant Depot to:
* Issue a public apology for the incident.
* Conduct a full investigation into the actions of the employee identified as Samier, and take appropriate disciplinary action if company policies were violated.
* Provide mandatory training for all managers and supervisors on customer service, conflict de, escalation, and respectful communication with customers and community leaders.
* Have the store manager, Mr. Ismail Sighir, issue a public statement explaining the company’s policy regarding ICE’s use of the parking lot and addressing the concerns raised by the community.
* Clearly communicate the company’s policy regarding law enforcement access to its private property so customers and employees understand where the company stands.
This message is also directed to every business that chooses to assist or facilitate ICE operations that create fear in our communities.
This is only the beginning in Massachusetts. There are many other businesses that will also be asked to listen to the voices of the communities they serve and to act with transparency, respect, and accountability.
