Low rates, auto rate-match and no fees! Can't complain!

Refinanced to Athena in Oct 2019 and can't really complain about much in the 8 months since.The application was simple to initiate and the communication during the entire loan review & setup process was excellent.
Our application took longer than expected because we received a low initial valuation, which we challenged.
After that, it was smooth sailing to settlement.

Athena's quick decisions and transparency with regards to rate changes is refreshing when compared with our previous lender.
They immediately passed on 2 RBA rate drops in full since we began our refinance application, and provided a prompt and detailed explanation as to why they couldn't pass on the 3rd (the Covid rate drop).

The auto rate-match policy (existing customers get the same rate as new customers on like-for-like loans) is something we've never seen before from a lender, and was one of the big drivers for us to make the switch.

A few expected quality-of-life features (direct salary payments, mobile app etc) are still pending, but the overall positives of Athena's offering far outweighs these minor negatives.

We now have a great home loan rate, pay no fees and have the assurance of transparency for future rate decisions.
Athena's loyalty bonus (0.01% rate discount per year for the first 5 years) is just the icing that this home loan cake needs.
Keep it up Athena!

They are super helpful and responsive

They are super helpful and responsive. They have been very quick to pass on interest rate cuts. I'm very happy with my choice of going with Athena. My interest rate is awesome.

Just waste of time

Just waste of time. Had very good credit history. During communication they told me everything is looking good with the application. After 3-4 weeks of communication, they said because of COVID we can't fund 80% LVR, we can refinance with 70% LVR for the given postcode. Should have informed during application lodgement time. Disappointed!
However, very good communication after application lodgement.

Due to changes caused by COVID-19, on 26 March, we updated our max LVR from 80% to 70% and informed all our impacted customers. The information you were provided when you submitted your application was correct at the time. Unfortunately with all the changes and uncertainty being caused by COVID-19, we had to make the decision to lower our max LVR temporarily late last month. Great start, slower equity access.

Great process refinancing from ING, Athena kept us informed for each step and overall it was very rapid experience. Costs were super low as advertised. However, we wanted to access some equity during refinancing but this part has been a much slower process.

Applied a month ago

Applied a month ago. Told would be given approval at outset as we were paying two thirds in cash. Been given the run around for the last three weeks in what I can only assume was a delaying tactic while they decided how they were going to deal with the current Covid19 situation. As late as yesterday, was being told we still had an 80% chance of being granted the loan. Got the call this afternoon and turns out we weren't approved. Settlement was going to be tomorrow. If they had only been upfront at the start I could have at least organised alternative finance. This has left me out of pocket and several other parties severely inconvenienced. The people I spoke to on the phone however have all been lovely but this has left a very bitter taste in my mouth...

Very satisfied customer

Athena have been excellent throughout our refinancing application and settlement process. There were a couple of hiccups along the way but they were quickly resolved. Very proactive with their communication. The vibe of their communication, both written and in person is informal, friendly and helpful. Very happy that we switched to Athena! :-)

5brm, 450sqm Sydney metro house valued @580k

Dbl storey 5brm 3 bathrooms, 450 and 500sqm, valued at under 600k. Use CoreLogic. My application rejected. No common sense, perhaps just click copy, paste and reject (click). When contacted both companies, they asked me to provide them valuation for few properties (i should do their job? especially core logic?)

Best lender ever!

During the whole house buying process, Athena have been outstanding and were the one party that we dealt with that was always totally reliable, helpful and prompt in communication. The rate is the best we could find Australia wide and they have been so fast and easy to talk with over the phone and via email. Athena kept on checking in with what to do next so we felt guided as first time home buyers.

Fantastic lender

To the last two people giving 1 star review.... let me just say this.
I’ve been with Athena for just over 3 months. The sign up process was unbelievably straight forward and the communication was flawless and still is.
I have moved my home loan twice in the past, through a broker, and the entire process was a nightmare that took 6 months.
Athena rocks!!!
Yes, they didn’t pass on the rate cut this time round.
Yes, they promised they always will do it so they’ve gone back on their own word.
However people, cut them some slack! I’m pretty sure they would have passed the cut in ordinary circumstances. But the current situation is far from ordinary. There may be thousands of people out there unable to pay their home loans to Athena for the next few months. And no one really knows how things are going to turn out....
So yeah... Athena are great in my opinion and still one of the cheapest lenders in the market. So to the last two reviewers.... like Scott Pape said in his book... if you don’t like it, don’t b***ch. Switch. And no, I’m not working for Athena.
I just hope my money is secure with them as I’m planning to increase my payments whilst the rate is so low.....

Sadly, funding markets do not make it possible. We’re proud that in less than a year, we are the only lender to pass on all 4 of the last RBA rate changes immediately and in full to both new and existing customers. Unlike many others, we did this because it was the right thing to do. We were so vocal about it because we knew the banks could afford to as well! We actually can't say we will pass on all RBA rate cuts hence why we never mention this in our marketing and messages. We too are disappointed that we could not pass on yesterday's rate cut. But we will never be sneaky with our customers. We are really proud that we were able to pass on the last 4 rate drops to both new and existing customers in full and immediately (no other lender did this).
As you know, we are currently in extraordinary times. The economic disruption has put the market into turmoil and caused an increase in the costs of funds. We are about great rates that stay great. Not giving a temporary discount to get you in and sneakily hike it up. We want to be able to give a consistently low rate. We do believe that when it was possible to pass on the rate cuts other lenders should have done so. Given everything that has happened, for this rate cut it is not possible for us nor for most lenders.

Rate cuts...full of nothing

Hey Athena, very quick to pass on the rate cut and bag the big banks, but not this time? Are you finally not living up to what you promise?
3rd March - For the fourth time in a row Athena has immediately passed on the RBA rate cut in full to new and existing customers. None of the 12 largest lenders have done this. We believe this is money that belongs in the pockets of Aussie families.

Well? Put your money where your mouth is or are you just as greedy now as everyone else?

As I am sure you will be aware, we are currently in extraordinary times. The markets are very volatile. We want to make sure we do the best for our customers and for our business and at the moment that means taking a bit of time to make the right decisions for everyone.

We are about great rates that stay great. This what’s most important to us. We’re not that lender that gets you in on a super low rate, only to sneakily hike it up over time. We are the only Aussie lender with the automatic rate match, where we guarantee we will never charge our loyal customers, more than new customers on a like-for-like loan.

Great except for the property valuers

Great except for the property valuers - they were slack at trying to arrange the appointment, then needed several days before they could visit the property. Since you only have 14 days to arrange finance, their stuffing around was going to cost us at least six business days plus a weekend. Then I googled them and there are lots of reviews saying that they don't do a thorough job anyway. So we decided to proceed without the valuation.

Hi there, it started slow but in all honestly that was due to me taking leave and my home loan case worker also taking leave during the Christmas period.
Once all the info was collated and verified it was relatively a very quick and smooth process.
Even before my first loan repayment was due I received an interest cut...
My only regret is that I should have moved over to Athena earlier...

Athena has really good communication. I really liked how they text you before they call to ensure that you are free to talk.
It was a very simple process to re finance and I was pleasantly surprised when they passed on the latest interest rate drop on the same day it was announced.
